Joachim Schmid began his career as a critic, arguing passionately against prevailing notions of "art photography" and in favor of a broad, encompassing view of the medium as a form of cultural practice. In the late 80s, he shifted his focus to making those arguments in his own art, which is based primarily on found photography. At the time, Schmid lived near one of the largest flea markets in Berlin, and his broad collection of vernacular photography formed the raw material for many of the works included here. His oeuvre reflects a close observation of photographic history and a fascination with the images themselves, in all their bizarre and conventionalized aspects, but its fundamental richness--along with the sardonic wit he so often displays--derails any attempt to read it as academic.

This book is the culmination of many years of research in the Frederick County area, and contains information about the descendants of Michael and Eleanora Schmid Köller/Culler, who lived in Frederick County, Maryland, and the families who married into the Culler family, such as Ahalt, Biser, Bussard, Coblentz, Ernsberger, Holter, Kefauver, Keller, Remsberg/Remsburg, Rudy, Smith and Zimmerman, along with many other names. Since three of Michael and Eleanora's sons moved to Richland County, Ohio, there are also names of many of the families in that area besides the Ernsbergers.

This reference book, which will be of great value to researchers, is the result of German-l apanese cooperation in the life sci­ ences, supported by the Ministry for Research and Technology (Bundesministerium fur Forschung und Technologie) of the Federal Republic of Germany. This cooperation has led to a series of contacts between scientists and scientific institutions in the two countries that have enriched and strengthened our tradi­ tionally strong ties. A means of communication is a prerequisite for the exchange of scientific information, the discussion of research strategies, and the organization of scientific meetings. In science, English has become the most important language and now forms the basis of communication. Yet, in order to have a better understanding of specialized scientific texts, often available only in Japanese or German, it is important to have a glossary of biotechnological terminology in several languages. I wish this dictionary of biotechnology a successful start and wide application, both from the scientific and international points of view.
