Henry Beaufort Bishop, Chancellor, Cardinal (Classic Reprint)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.00 $Excerpt from Henry Beaufort Bishop, Chancellor, CardinalThis book is an attempt to do neither more nor less than justice to an Englishman who has not yet received the recognition which is his due. A generation ago Dr. Stubbs in his Constitutional History of England reversed the unfavourable verdict upon the character of Henry Beaufort to which the genius of Shakespeare has given an undeserved vitality; and the final estimate of the tribunal of history will probably have but few deductions to make from the tribute paid to Beaufort in that masterly review of the evolution of English govern ment. The plan of that work, however, left room only for a brief and incidental treatment of Beaufort, and that too confined to his statesmanship. The Cardinal of England deserves a biography of his own. His public life of nearly half a century was one of the main threads of continuity between three Lancastrian reigns. His activity was an important factor in the course of events at more than one critical stage in the history of England, and perhaps of Europe.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. My Life With the Eskimo (Classic Reprint)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.93 $Excerpt from My Life With the EskimoBut what led most definitely to the planning of my second expe dition was that I learned that to the eastward of Cape Bathurst the Mackenzie Eskimo were unaware of the existence of any people. The coast of Dolphin and Union Straits had been mapped by Dr. John Richardson in 1826, but he had seen none of its inhabitants. My knowledge of the habits of the Eskimo led me to suspect that his finding no people was in itself no proof of the non-existence of people on this portion of the mainland, for he had skirted the coast in summer when the natives were likely to be inland caribou hunting. Further, the English explorers had seen Eskimo on Coronation Gulf and on Victoria Island in the first half of the eighteenth century, and these people had not been visited since. It would be interest ing to revisit them after sixty years. At Herschel Island I hap pened to meet Captain Amundsen on his way west from his now famous voyage of the Northwest Passage, and I found that he also had sailed past these shores without seeing any people and in fact without opportunity of seeing any.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Wireless Telegraphy (Classic Reprint)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.04 $Excerpt from Wireless TelegraphyThis book was written at the suggestion Of the publisher, Dr. Enke. It was originally intended to be an abridged form Of my larger book Elektromagnetische Schwingungen und drahtlose Telegraphie (stutt gart, It has, however, developed into something quite different; evidence Of this lies in the fact that only 79 Of the 332 illustrations Of the larger book have been reproduced here.Since I began writing this book (winter 1905 - 1906) conditions in wire less telegraphy have changed greatly. The mere fact that new devices and methods have appeared would be Of relatively little importance; but the points Of view determining the consideration Of many Of the problems Of the art have changed entirely. This necessitated rewriting many portions Of the book, which would otherwise have been out Of date from its very publication. I need hardly dwell on what this has meant for both the publisher and myself.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Wholly for God: The True Christian Life (Classic Reprint)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.37 $Excerpt from Wholly for God: The True Christian LifeA few words, first of all, to let my reader know what has given rise to the publication of this volume. Last winter Dr. Whyte of Edinburgh gave a lecture on William Law, in which he directed attention to the treasures to be found in the writings of this almost forgotten, though, as he styles him, "quite incomparable author." With many others I owe Dr. Whyte a debt of gratitude for this introduction to one of the most powerful and suggestive writers on the Christian life it has been my privilege to become acquainted with. The present volume is a proof of my high appreciation of his teaching, and my desire to let others share with me in the profit to be derived from it.Not long after the delivery of the lecture, a volume of selections was published, with the title Character and Characteristics of William Law, Nonjuror and Mystic. Selected and Arranged, with an Introduction by Alexander Whyte, D.D. (Hodder Stoughton.)About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Notes on Irish Architecture, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.77 $Excerpt from Notes on Irish Architecture, Vol. 2This is the only tower I have ever seen without any remains of a church in its neigh bourhood. On this circumstance Dr. Reeves remarks: This monument of antiquity, to a stranger would appear, from the Smoothness of the sward that surrounds it, and the total absence of any kindred building, to.have been a solitary erection; but the testimony of those who'removed the foundations of adjacent walls, and who cleared away vast quantities of human remains from the surrounding space, and especially of the mason, who about twenty years ago repaired the top of the tower, and built into it a sculptured architrave of freestone which he found among the ruins, goes to prove that this tower, like all its fellows.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. With Flashlight and Rifle, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.02 $Excerpt from With Flashlight and Rifle, Vol. 1: A Record of Hunting Adventures and of Studies in Wild Life in Equatorial East AfricaThe illustrations in this book, with a very few exceptions, which are indicated, have been reproduced from the original photographs taken by myself.Dr. Ludwig Meek, in the course of his appreciative introduction to the German edition, refers to these photographs as Natururkunden - certificated records, as it were, of the scenes from wild life therein depicted. And the fact that they are absolutely free from "retouching" of any kind will be held to justify him in the use of that term. Absolutely the only photograph that has been worked up in any way is the one (on p. 393) of two lions attacking an ox. The negative of this was damaged while I was developing it. I have described elsewhere the feeling of satisfaction with which, six months afterwards, I received a telegram from the Fatherland to announce that it was gerettet - restored! My pictures may be classified as (1) ordinary photographs taken by daylight at varying ranges; (2) those taken with a telephoto-lens; (3) those taken at night time by flashlight.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
