Schweinfurt-regensburg Mission [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 7,922.00 $"Enthralling eye-witness histories."--John Keegan . On August 17th, 1943, for the first time, the entire American bomber force based in Britain struck deep in Germany. They targeted the Messerschmitt aircraft factory at Regensburg and the ball-bearing factories at Schweinfurt...with disastrous results. One in six bombers failed to return and the U.S. Air Force suffered its worst defeat of World War Two. The best-selling author of The Berlin Raids and The Battle of Hamburg now gives the same meticulous attention to this momentous setback. Working from original documents and personal accounts of survivors (military and civilian) on both sides, he reveals how the events of that fateful day, with its harrowing losses, destroyed any hopes of ending the war quickly.

Schweinfurt-Regensburg Mission: The American Raids on 17 August 1943
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 23.85 $On 17 August 1943, the entire strength of the American heavy bomber forces in England set out to raid two major industrial complexes deep in southern Germany, the vast Messerschmitt aircraft factory and the vital KGF ballbearing plant. For American commanders it was the culmination of years of planning and hope, the day when their self-defending formations of the famous Flying Fortress could at last perform their true role and reach out by daylight to strike at targets in the deepest corners of industrial Germany. The day ended in disaster for the Americans. Thanks to the courage of the aircrews the bombers won through to the targets and caused heavy damage, but sixty were shot down and the hopes of the American commanders were shattered. Historically, it was probably the most important day for the American air forces during the Second World War.While researching this catastrophic raid the Author interviewed hundreds of the airmen involved, German defenders, ‘slave workers’ and eye witnesses. This took him twice to both the USA and Germany. The result is a mass of fresh, previously unused material with which the author finally provides the full story of this famous day’s operations. Not only is the American side described in far greater depth than before but the previously vague German side of the story – both the Luftwaffe action and the civilian experiences in Schweinfurt and Regensburg, are now presented clearly and in detail for the first time. The important question of why the RAF did not support the American effort and follow up the raid on Schweinfurt as planned is also fully covered.

Bitten by Witch Fever : Wallpaper & Arsenic in the Nineteenth-Century Home
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 31.17 $The shocking story of a deadly trend in Victorian wallpaper design, illustrated by beautiful and previously unseen arsenic-riddled designs from the British National ArchivesIn Germany, in 1814, Wilhelm Sattler created an extremely toxic arsenic and verdigris compound pigment, Schweinfurt green–known also as Paris, Vienna, or emerald green–which became an instant favorite amongst designers and manufacturers the world over, thanks to its versatility in creating enduring yellows, vivid greens, and brilliant blues. Most insidiously, the arsenic-laced pigment made its way into intricately patterned, brightly colored wallpapers and from there, as they became increasingly in vogue, into the Victorian home. As its use became widespread, commercial arsenic mines increased production to meet the near-insatiable demand. Not least of which was the UK’s largest mining plant, DGC whose owner was William Morris, originator of the British Arts and Crafts movement and arguably the finest wallpaper designer of his generation.Bitten by Witch Fever (Morris’s own phrase to dismiss arsenic- and- wall-paper-related public health concerns in 1885) tells this fatal story of Victorian home décor, building upon new research conducted especially for this book by the British National Archive, on their own samples. Spliced between the sections of text are stunning facsimiles of the wallpapers themselves. 350+ illustrations, 250+ in color
