Addiction and the Vulnerable Self: Modified Dynamic Group Therapy for Substance Abusers (The Guilford Substance Abuse Series)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.59 $The Harvard Cocaine Recovery Project, a National Institute on Drug Abuse-funded randomized clinical trial, was initiated in 1986 to compare different approaches for treating cocaine abusers. Modified Dynamic Group Therapy (MDGT), one of the models used in the study, is a short-term supportive-expressive psychodynamic group approach specifically adapted for cocaine addicts. While many previous studies of substance abuse treatment were compromised by extraordinarily high dropout rates, this approach retained nearly 70% of group members for the entire length of treatment. This book describes MDGT and provides a practical guide to implementation. Based on an understanding of the psychological vulnerabilities of addicts, the MDGT model addresses the modifications in psychodynamic technique that are necessary for addicts' needs. It focuses on four main areas of difficulty involving self-regulation; affect, self-esteem, relationship, and self-care problems. Both supportive and expressive, the approach helps group members identify, process, and modify the characterological traits that mask addict's vulnerabilities. With this approach, a well-led group can heighten self-esteem, improve self-care, combat feelings of isolation and shame, and strengthen the individual's capacity for positive change. Concomitant involvement with an individual therapist/counselor is encouraged as a means to support and facilitate the group therapy, especially early in group treatment, and to maintain a flexible individual and group treatment context for self-exploration and understanding. Bringing the model to life are detailed vignettes and transcripts of groups in different phases of recovery. These cases demonstrate techniques, illustrate technical issues, and illuminate major themes that unfold during treatment.

If you're a desktop, mobile or web developer, this book is your blueprint to getting your startup off the ground with no outside investment. This book intentionally avoids topics restricted to venture-backed startups such as: honing your investment pitch, securing funding, and figuring out how to use the piles of cash investors keep placing in your lap. This book assumes:You don't have $6M of investor funds sitting in your bank accountYou're not going to relocate to the handful of startup hubs in the worldYou're not going to work 70 hour weeks for low pay with the hope of someday making millions from stock optionsThere's nothing wrong with pursuing venture funding and attempting to grow fast like Amazon, Google, Twitter, and Facebook. Graffito
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 62.94 $The graffiti phenomenon taking place in urban America has erupted into a full scale war. The main weapons: aerosol spray paint versus hundreds of taxpayer-funded abatements programs. To the graffiti writer, graffiti is a secret language, an empowering form of self-expression, a screaming voice against an unjust, alienating society. To the upholders of social law and order, graffiti is "vandalism," an ugly and terrifying threat to social value, which cost U.S. taxpayers four billion dollars in 1995.For two years, beginning in the fall of 1994, Michael Walsh immersed himself in the graffiti world of the San Francisco Bay Area. He took thousands of photographs, frequented train yards, went on all-night "bombing runs" with graffiti writers, prowled the Muni train tunnels at 3a.m., rode with graffiti abatement crews, spoke with small business owners who are frequent targets of graffiti, and tracked down key city officials and personnel directly involved with graffiti removal. This powerful book delivers a raw, in-your-face account of this complex and controversial subject. It contains nearly 200 photographs, and quotes from over fifty interviews regarding both sides of the issue, and dispels many of the media-generated myths concerning graffiti. In this moving, articulate, visual account, Michael Walsh presents to us an urban phenomenon begging to be understood.

Poems of Love and War Format: Paperback
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.91 $American suffragette, socialite, poet, novelist, nurse—Mary Borden (1886-1968) is a complex historical figure, who is unfortunately often overlooked in the male-dominated survey of war heroes. In her twenties, during World War I, Borden self-funded, established, and ran a field hospital for French soldiers on the frontlines “as close to the fighting as possible.” Although married with three children, she fell in love and had a scandalous affair with a British officer she met at the front. She was close friends with William Churchill, Noel Coward, and Albert Einstein, and she eventually organized the presidential campaign of her nephew, Adlai Stevenson. Borden was, in every way, an exceptional human being, and she brilliantly captured her wartime experiences through her poetry. The first full book of Borden’s poems ever to be published, Poems of Love and War finally offers the collected works of this remarkable woman nearly a century after they were written. It includes an introduction describing her extraordinary life, from growing up in Chicago to her war efforts to her cultural and political influence in later years. With many previously unpublished poems, Poems of Love and War collects Borden’s immediate, passionate reactions to everything she saw and experienced throughout two world wars.
