Bennett and Seena B. Kohl interpret those stories through the lenses of history and social science, and they present a view of settlement experience as one phase of the evolving postfrontier society and culture of western North America. Settling the Canadian-American West, 1890–1915 contains a synthesis of Canadian and U.S. settlement experiences giving, to the extent possible, equal space to both sides of the international boundary. The experiences of people in these adjacent territories were virtually identical, with emigrant populations from the same countries and socioeconomic strata. Among other aspects of the homesteading experience, the authors explore the “interactive adaptation” that developed in the West. Networks of mutual aid, reverently remembered by the voices found in these pages, eased the inevitable hardships.

Classical music was central to German national identity in the early twentieth century. The preeminence of composers such as Bach and Beethoven and artists such as conductor Wilhelm Furtwangler and pianist Walter Gieseking was cited by the Nazis as justification for German expansionism and as evidence of Aryan superiority. In the minds of many Americans, further German aggression could be prevented only if the population's faith in its moral and cultural superiority was shattered. In Settling Scores, David Monod examines the attempted "denazification" of the German music world by the Music Control Branch of the Information Control Division of Military Government. The occupying American forces barred from the stage and concert hall all former Nazi Party members and even anyone deemed to display an "authoritarian personality." They also imported European and American music. These actions, however, divided American officials and outraged German audiences and performers. Nonetheless, the long-term effects were greater than has been previously recognized, as German government officials regained local control and voluntarily limited their involvement in artistic life while promoting "new" (anti-Nazi) music.

In this, the sixth and final volume of the journals of don Diego de Vargas, Kessell and his colleagues continue their exploration of politics and society in the colonial New Mexico of the turn of the eighteenth century. Despite serious charges of malfeasance brought against him by agents of his political enemy Governor Pedro Rodríguez Cubero, Vargas was acquitted after three years of court hearings and legal maneuvering in the viceregal court in Mexico City. With his acquittal came reappointment to the governor's seat in New Mexico. The journals reveal that maintaining peace in New Mexico during Vargas' absence was a difficult task for Rodríguez Cubero. Hispanic colonists and Pueblo Indians were suspicious of one another, and partisans of the deposed Vargas made little effort to hide their loyalty. With the Reconqueror's return, the colony settled back into familiar routines. Not even don Diego's early death in 1704 undid the hard-won recolonization.In a brief but suggestive Afterword, the editors contend that the era of Diego de Vargas lived on well after his death. Although never fully implemented, the Reconqueror's plan to reform the colony affected almost every aspect of life, from the social order and relations between Hispanic and Pueblo neighbors to land tenure. New Mexico after Vargas, they conclude, had a distinctly different face.A Settling of Accounts contains a cumulative series index as well as a complete list of the documents presented in each of the six volumes.
