Omar Sharif Talks Bridge [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 29.92 $Stop the average man in the street and ask him: Who is the worlds most famous bridge player? What reply would you get? Race, Revolution, and the Struggle for Human Rights in Zanzibar : The Memoirs of Ali Sultan Issa and Seif Sharif Hamad
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 38.59 $Zanzibar has had the most turbulent postcolonial history of any part of the United Republic of Tanzania, yet few sources have emerged that explain the reasons why. The current political impasse in the islands is a contest primarily over the question of whether to accept and sustain the Zanzibari Revolution of 1964. Defenders of the revolution speak the language of African nationalism and aspire to unify the majority of Zanzibar through the politics of race. Their opponents claim, instead, that the revolution undermined the islands’ cosmopolitan cultural heritage and espouse the language of human rights.Ali Sultan Issa was an early Zanzibari nationalist. As a minister in the first revolutionary government he became one of Zanzibar’s most controversial figures, responsible for some of the government’s most radical policies. Later imprisoned, he has reemerged as one of Zanzibar’s most successful property developers. Seif Shariff Hamad came of age during the revolution, becoming disenchanted with its broken promises and excesses. Having served in Tanzania’s ruling party, he is now a leading figure in Zanzibar’s opposition. Together these two memoirs trace Zanzibar’s postindependence trajectory and reveal how Zanzibaris continue to dispute their revolutionary heritage and remain divided over issues of ethnic identity. These memoirs, edited with an introduction by G. Thomas Burgess, will provide scholars and teachers with highly readable first-person narratives in which two African postindependence leaders describe their public and personal achievements, conflicts, failures, and tragedies. They will give students and scholars unique access to life, culture, and politics of Zanzibar.

Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 62.00 $Contents: 1. General introduction/Osmund Bopearachchi. 2. Introduction to Punch marked coins in the Barikot Hoard/ Susmita Basu Majumdar. 3. Some observation on die cutting techniques based on Eucratides I s Coins/Osmund Bopearachchi. Bibliography. Although new inscriptions have surfaced over the last twenty years, providing invaluable information on the chronology of the kings of Central Asia and North-West India and the important events associated with their reigns, the chronological sequence of many Indo-Greek, Indo-Scythian and Indo-Parthian kings is still uncertain. It is thanks to the coins that we know that forty-five Greek kings reigned in Bactria and India, although written sources mention only eight. Coins are crucial for understanding the role of these kings: their stylistic characteristics suggest broad chronological periods; the overstrikes of one king on the coins of another king indicate the succession of their reigns; and minting techniques, metrology, iconography and monograms associated with find-spots help to assess the geographical localization of different kingdoms. It is in this context that the composition of coin hoards provides new insights into the economic activities, modes of production and artistic tastes of the regions. Building on previous studies of coin hoards found in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the purpose of this volume is to examine four previously unpublished hoards. The analysis of the Barikot hoards, consisting of imperial silver punch marked and Indo-Greek coins, is a major contribution of this volume.

Bangladesh, Untold Facts
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 184.23 $The year 1971 is etched in the collective consciousness of Bangladeshis, Pakistanis and Indians though to a lesser degree as a time of tragedy and upheaval. For Bangladeshis 1971 was the year of blood and tears, for Pakistanis deep humiliation, and for the Indians of triumph. Lt Col Sharif ul haq Dalim has unraveled some of the rare facts about military operations in then East Pakistan and Liberation War for Bangladesh in his book Bangladesh: Untold Facts. There is a lot of literature on 1971 but, understandably enough, very little of it comes from Pakistan. The liberation literature in Bangladesh rests upon the perception of victimhood to the point of denying resistance from Bengali armed fighters at places. The literature from India mostly accounts of military officers focuses on the 1971 war without taking account of the role of India in East Bengal from March 1971 onwards. It, too, misses out both on the perspectives of the Bengalis as well as the West Pakistanis. This book is the best account of 1971, so far. The book is also eminently readable. For all these qualities the book is recommended strongly to scholars of South Asia and the interested layperson alike, which will remain required reading for times to come.

Creating a World That Works for All
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 32.38 $The world is a mess. The privileged few prosper. The masses suffer. And everyone feels spiritually empty. Most people would blame capitalism, racism, or some other ""ism"". But according to Sharif M. Abdullah, the problem is not ideology. It's exclusivity -- our desire to stay separate from other people. In Creating a World That Works for All, Abdullah takes a look at the mess we live in -- and presents a way out. To restore balance to the earth and build community, he says, people must stop blaming others, embrace inclusivity, and become ""menders"". He outlines three simple tests -- for ""enoughness"", exchangeability, and common benefit -- to guide people as they transform themselves and the world.
