Spells, Images, and Mandalas: Tracing the Evolution of Esoteric Buddhist Rituals (The Sheng Yen Series in Chinese Buddhist Studies)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 60.47 $Koichi Shinohara traces the evolution of Esoteric Buddhist rituals from the simple recitation of spells in the fifth century to complex systems involving image worship, mandala initiation, and visualization practices in the ninth century. He presents an important new reading of a seventh-century Chinese text called the Collected Dharani Sutras, which shows how earlier rituals for specific deities were synthesized into a general Esoteric initiation ceremony and how, for the first time, the notion of an Esoteric Buddhist pantheon emerged. In the Collected Dharani Sutras, rituals for specific deities were typically performed around images of the deities, yet Esoteric Buddhist rituals in earlier sources involved the recitation of spells rather than the use of images. The first part of this study explores how such simpler rituals came to be associated with the images of specific deities and ultimately gave rise to the general Esoteric initiation ceremony described in the crucial example of the All-Gathering mandala ritual in the Collected Dharani Sutras. The visualization practices so important to later Esoteric Buddhist rituals were absent from this ceremony, and their introduction would fundamentally change Esoteric Buddhist practice. This study examines the translations of dharani sutras made by Bodhiruci in the early eighth century and later Esoteric texts, such as Yixing's commentary on the Mahavairocana sutra and Amoghavajra's ritual manuals, to show how incorporation of visualization greatly enriched Esoteric rituals and helped develop elaborate iconographies for the deities. Over time, the ritual function of images became less certain, and the emphasis shifted toward visualization. This study clarifies the complex relationship between images and ritual, changing how we perceive Esoteric Buddhist art as well as ritual.

Hoofprint of the Ox: Principles of the Chan Buddhist Path as Taught by a Modern Chinese Master
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 62.00 $Revered by Buddhists in the United States and China, Master Sheng-yen shares his wisdom and teachings in this first comprehensive English primer of Chan, the Chinese tradition of Buddhism that inspired Japanese Zen. Often misunderstood as a system of mind games, the Chan path leads to enlightenment through apparent contradiction. While demanding the mental and physical discipline of traditional Buddhist doctrine, it asserts that wisdom (Buddha-nature) is innate and immediate in all living beings, and thus not to be achieved through devotion to the strictures of religious practice. You arrive without departing. Master Sheng-yen provides an unprecedented understanding of Chan, its precepts, and its practice. Beginning with a basic overview of Buddhism and meditation, Hoofprint of the Ox details the progressive mental exercises traditionally followed by all Buddhists. Known as the Three Disciplines, these procedures develop moral purity, meditative concentration, and enlightening insight through the "stilling" of the mind. Master Sheng-yen then expounds Chan Buddhism, recounting its centuries-old history in China and illuminating its fundamental tenets. He contemplates the nature of Buddhahood, specifies the physical and mental prerequisites for beginning Chan practice, and humbly considers what it means to be an enlightened Chan master. Drawing its title from a famous series of pictures that symbolizes the Chan path as the search of an ox-herd for his wayward ox, Hoofprint of the Ox is an inspirational guide to self-discovery through mental transformation. A profound contribution to Western understanding of Chan and Zen, this book is intended for practicing Buddhists as well as anyone interested in learning about the Buddhist path.

Crossing the Ocean of Life and Death
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 6.35 $Never, since Padmasambhava's teachings of the Bardo Thodol ("Liberation by Hearing in the Bardo"), has such a authoritative and enlightening account on the dying process been documented. In Grand Master Sheng-yen Lu's 163rd book, Crossing the Ocean of Life and Death, all conceivable questions are answered about the most crucial moment in a person's life - leaving this world. With utmost sincerity, Grand Master Lu writes this book to help readers understand the reality of dying. When a person dies, his spirit enters the bardo realm, a phase between death and rebirth. Grand Master Lu teaches readers how to properly approach death through the Dream Yoga, one of the Six Yogas of Naropa, a practice heavily emphasized in Vajrayana Buddhism. If a person is able to train and control his mind in the dream state, which is very similar to dying, he will be able to reach the Western Paradise, or even Buddhahood, while in the bardo realm. In this book, Grand Master Lu describes his personal experiences of facing death. He documents in detail the sensory experiences of dying, the illusions emerging at death, and the methodology to avert rebirth into one of the six realms. Ultimately, this book illuminates the path to Buddhahood, that transcends life and death. About the Author Grand Master Sheng-yen Lu was born on the eighteenth day of the fifth Lunar month, 1945, in Chia-yi County, Taiwan. He currently resides in Redmond, WA in the United States. His religious background includes Christianity, Taoism, Sutrayana and Tantric Buddhism. Grand Master Lu has been practicing yoga and meditation every day for over thirty-eight years and carries the lineages of Nyingma, Sakya, Kagyu, and Gelug. He is a guru of the Buddhist Tripitaka as well as the knowledge of the Supreme Consciousness of the Universe.
