Shibboleth, A Templar Monitor: Monitor of the Freemason American Knights Templar (Forgotten Books)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.24 $This is a nineteenth century 'Monitor' of the American Knights Templar. This is a Masonic organization which has its own distinctive rituals and regalia. While they are not connected directly to the Medieval Templars, they carry on the knightly ideals by charitable works, and sponsoring Masonic youth groups.Shibboleth is similar in format and organization to other 19th century Masonic literature such as Duncan's Masonic Ritual and Monitor, including the funky woodcuts and 19th century atmosphere. Mixed in with this is historical material on the Templars, stories from the Bible, songs, poetry, sermons, a lot of blank forms for all occasions, and bits of advice. For instance, 'Hints on Templar Banquets' (Quote from sacred-texts.com)About the AuthorMary Robinson, nee Darby (1757 - 26 December 1800) the English poet and novelist, was also known for her role as Perdita (heroine of Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale) in 1779. It was during this performance that she attracted the notice of the young Prince of Wales, later King George IV of Great Britain and Ireland. Her affair with him ended in 1781, and "Perdita" Robinson was left to support herself through an annuity granted by the Crown (in return for some letters written by the Prince) in 1783 and through her writings. Today, she is remembered both as the first public mistress of George IV, and as a woman writer of the late 18th century. Shibboleth: My Revolting Life
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 230.62 $The extraordinary autobiography of Jeremy John Ratter, a.k.a. Penny Rimbaud, founder, lyricist, and drummer of Crass, a band unique in the history of rock 'n' roll. Crass took the idealism of punk seriously. When Sex Pistol Johnny Rotten screamed "No Future" the challenge was taken. In the space of seven short years, from 1977 to their breakup in 1984, Crass almost single-handedly breathed life back into the then moribund peace and anarchist movements. They birthed a huge underground network of do-it-yourself activism, fanzines, record labels, activist action groups, and concert halls. While remaining on their own independent record label, and steadfastly refusing any interviews with the major press, they managed to sell literally millions of records. Their political "pranks" included the now infamous "KGB tapes," trumpeted among others, on the front page of the New York Times, and the duping of Total Loving magazine into including a Crass song (ranting against the patriarchy of marriage) as the "perfect song to play on your wedding day." In this book, Penny takes us from his strict lower-middle class childhood and his experiences in art school to the Crass years, the hippies, and Free Festivals, including the now legendary, illegal Stonehenge Festival, of which Rimbaud was a cofounder.Shibboleth also includes, for the first time, the full story of Wally Hope—"The Last of the Hippies," close friend of Rimbaud, cofounder of the Stonehenge Festival, and who was murdered by the State while incarcerated in a mental institution.

Cliches of Politics
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 29.00 $This is a reprint of a similar book previously entitled "Clichés of Socialism." It is an irreverent collection of 83 right-wing shibboleths, against "socialist tinkering," repackaged as contemporary nuggets of patriotic wisdom. Were it not so obviously politically skewed, this book could be a potentially valuable collectible. However since it is both dated and gores only one side of the "sacred cow," it is much less valuable. Instead of just changing the title, the author should also have changed the content. Arguably, in today's reactionary American culture, which is slowly drifting in the direction of Fascism, and given that Communism is on its last legs, we sorely need a book that explores the clichés from the other side of the sacred cow much more than from the side presented here. h-1
