Brion Gysin: His Name Was Master: Texts and Interviews by Genesis Breyer P-Orridge & Peter Christopherson
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 69.96 $Brion Gysin (1916–86) has been an incredibly influential artist and iconoclast: his development of the “cut-up” technique with William S. Burroughs has inspired generations of writers, artists and musicians. Gysin was also a skilled networker and revered expat: together with his friend Paul Bowles, he more or less constructed the post-beatnik romanticism for life and magic in Morocco, and was also a protagonist in an international gay culture with inspirational reaches in both America and Europe. Not surprisingly, Gysin has become something of a cult figure. One of the artists he inspired is Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, who collaborated with both Gysin and Burroughs in the 1970s, during his work with Throbbing Gristle and COUM Transmissions. The interviews made by P-Orridge have since become part of a New Wave/Industrial mythos. This volume presents them in their entirety alongside three texts on Gysin by P-Orridge, plus an introduction. This book is an exclusive insight into the mind of a man P-Orridge describes as “a kind of Leonardo da Vinci of the last century,” and a fantastic complement to existing biographies and monographs.

Deuteronomy: Smyth & Helwys Bible Commentary (Book & CD-ROM)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 135.02 $Deuteronomy, the last and widely considered the most influential of the five books of the Pentateuch, preserves the three addresses Moses delivered to the people of Israel just prior to his death and their entry into the promised land. Its name, which means "second law," represented a reiteration, explication, and, to a degree, expansion, of the sole covenant between God and Israel. It was a reinterpretation of the law designed to meet the needs of a new generation facing a new future. In this volume of the groundbreaking Smyth & Helwys Bible Commentary series, Old Testament scholar Mark Biddle skillfully leads his readers to consider how these words which have often confounded the casual reader can help us understand and meet the needs of our own generation as well.

Ruth & Esther [with Cdrom] (Smyth & Helwys Bible Commentary)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 135.02 $Ruth and Esther are the only two women for whom books of the Hebrew Bible are named. This distinction in itself sets the books apart from other biblical texts that bear male names, address the community through its male members, recall the workings of God and human history through a predominately male perspective, and look to the future through male heirs. These books are particularly stories of survival. The story of Ruth focuses on the survival of a family; Esther focuses on the survival of a people. As biblical characters, Ruth and Esther are women of their timeand are likewise women for all time. Each conforms to the cultural norms of their storys setting while pressing against boundaries of domination and privilege that limit female and outsider participation. As female characters, Ruth and Esther stand in a long line of biblical women who emerge as heroes in their stories. Each is a part of ancient Israels larger story of what it means to be and live as people of God.

Asylum Piece (Peter Owen Modern Classic)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.35 $This collection of stories, mostly interlinked and largely autobiographical, chart the descent of the narrator from the onset of neurosis to final incarceration in a Swiss clinic. The sense of paranoia, of persecution by a foe or force that is never given a name, evokes The Trial by Kafka, a writer with whom Kavan is often compared, although her deeply personal, restrained, and almost foreign —accented style has no true model. The same characters who recur throughout—the protagonist's unhelpful "adviser," the friend and lover who abandons her at the clinic, and an assortment of deluded companions—are sketched without a trace of the rage, self-pity, or sentiment that have marked more recent accounts of mental instability.

Peter Claus and the Naughty List
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 28.28 $Naughty or nice? Peter Claus thinks this yearly question is most unfair. As Santa’s son, he should know. For the second year in a row his name appears on the dreaded Naughty List. That means no presents for Christmas! But Peter doesn’t remember misbehaving—at least not enough to deserve such a harsh punishment. Taking the reins to Santa’s sleigh, Peter rounds up all the naughty children the world over. He wants Santa to hear their side. Maybe then Santa will see that not receiving gifts at Christmas isn’t the fairest way to deal with kids who do bad deeds. Peter’s not sure if his plans will work, but he does know a lot of boys and girls need his help if they have any chance of waking up to a merry Christmas.

Peter of Ailly: Concepts and Insolubles: An Annotated Translation (Synthese Historical Library)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 55.26 $2 Peter of Aillyl wrote his Concepts and Insolubles, according to the best 3 estimate, in 1372. He was at that time only about twenty-two years old. He was born around 1350" in Compiegne in the De de France, although his 5 family name associates him with the village of Ailly in Picardy. In 1364 he entered the University of Paris as a 'bursar' (i. e. , the recipient of a scholarship) at the College de Navarre. He received the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1367 and taught there until 1368, when he entered the Faculty of Theology. He became a Doctor of Theology in 1381. In the years that followed, Peter was very active in the 'conciliar' movement and in negotiations to bring about the end of the Great Schism of the West. He was elevated to the rank of Cardinal in 1411 by Pope John XXIII, the successor of Alexander V in the 'Pisa' line of Popes. He took an active part in the Council of Constance (1414-1418), which ended the Great Schism and elected Pope Martin V. Peter died on August 9, 1420. Most of the secondary literature on Peter of Ailly concerns his role in church politics, his writings on the Schism and on ecclesiastical reform, and various aspects of his theology. But Peter was active in a number of other areas as well. He wrote several works, for instance, on geography and astron 6 omy, including an Imago mundi read by Christopher Columbus.

A Hero for the Atomic Age: Thor Heyerdahl and the «Kon-Tiki» Expedition: 00 (Peter Lang Ltd.)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 33.83 $Nomination for Best Foreign Film at the 2013 Academy Awards In English and many other languages the name ‘Kon-Tiki’ has become a byword for adventure and the exotic. The journey of the Kon-Tiki from Peru to Polynesia in 1947 became one of the founding myths of the postwar world. In the voyage of six Scandinavians and a parrot on a balsa raft across the Pacific Ocean the classic journey of discovery was re-invented for generations to come. Kon-Tiki spoke of heroism, masculinity, free-spirited rebellion against scientific dogmatism, and the promise of an attainable exotic world, while it updated these mythological staples to fit the times. After years of relentless media exploitation of the 101-day raft journey, Heyerdahl emerged as the protagonist in a legend that helped to create a new postwar West. A Hero for the Atomic Age tells the story of how Heyerdahl organized an expedition to sail a balsa raft from Callao in Peru to the Tuamotu Islands in French Polynesia, and explains how he turned this physical crossing into an epic narrative that became imbued with a universal appeal. The book also addresses, for the first time, the problematic nature of Heyerdahl’s theory that a white culture-bearing race had initiated all the world’s great civilizations.

Peter Friedl: Playgrounds
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 53.58 $Over the last dozen years, Peter Friedl has been photographing play yards around the world and compiling the images alphabetically by place name. Playgrounds is less a comprehensive typology than a narrative study in which the few places shown--at once as specific as their chipped paint and representative of all those that cannot be included--describe the world through the space it allots to children. Roger M. Buergel writes that "Peter Friedl adopts a comparative approach, reminiscent of the anthropological projects of the first half of the twentieth century the quest for meaning at the intersection of repetition (image on image) and differentiation (the differences between the pictures)." Friedl was born in 1960 in Austria, where he still lives and works. His photography has appeared in numerous solo and group shows around the world including Documenta X (1997), the forty-eighth Venice Biennale (1999), and the third Berlin Biennial (2004). In 2006 the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona opened a retrospective called Peter Friedl: Work 1964-2006, which will travel to Miami and Marseille.

A Musical Christmas With Peter Duchin
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 61.12 $Peter Oelrichs Duchin (b. 1937) is an American pianist and band leader. Duchin was born in New York City, the son of pianist and band leader Eddy Duchin. Duchin formed his first professional band, which played the St. Regis Hotel in New York City, in 1962 thanks in part to his family name and the networking it had made possible. The band's style and genres have been described as "a musical approach that incorporates big bands, swing and Broadway songs (and nowadays, old-fashioned rock 'n' roll)." For this book, a labor of love harking back to his childhood, Peter Duchin chose 61 of the great religious and secular songs of the season, including all the most popular Christmas carols as well as some beautiful but less familiar liturgical songs, and has arranged them for easy family play for both piano and guitar. His notes prefacing the songs bring out interesting points about their composers and lyricists, their origins and adaptations, as well as the customs they celebrate. Where a song's original-language lyrics are popularly familiar, they are included alongside the English words. And spotted throughout the book, there are choice examples of Christmas art - from paintings, lithographs, commercial illustrations, and early greeting cards. It is a book for many hours, many years of musical pleasure in the home, a celebration of the most beloved season of the year.
