There are more than 8,000 value changes in the 2011 edition of the Scott U.S. Specialized Catalogue. Overshadowing the value changes this year are the addition of three new sections in the catalogue. The three new sections are Scott Stamp Values, U.S. Registry Exchange Labels of 1883-1911 and U.S. Stamps Used in the Confederacy. Many collectors no doubt are familiar with the Scott publication Scott Stamp Values: U.S. Specialized by Grade. Previously, this information was provided in a separate 50-page booklet. This information has now been incorporated into the Specialized bringing all Scott valuing information for the United States stamps into one volume. This new catalogue section lists values of the more expensive U.S. stamps in eight different grades, from Very Good to Superb. The addition of this new section adds more than 30,00 additional value points to the volume.

This year’s catalogue is a special 150th year edition. The Scott Catalogue of postage stamps, published by Scott Publishing Co, is updated annually and lists all the stamps of the entire world which its editors recognize as issued for postal purposes. It is published in eight large volumes that include six volumes containing all the countries of the world that have ever issued postage stamps, the United States Specialized Catalog, and the 1840-1940 Classic Specialized Catalogue (covering the world for the first 100 years that stamps were issued). The numbering system used by Scott to identify stamps is dominant among stamp collectors in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Scott Catalogues is the leader in the stamp market and a must for all collectors and researchers.

The 2012 edition features two impressive editorial enhancements and more than 9,000 value changes. The first is the addition of a new section listing the Colombia Consular overprints using the service established by established by the Sociedad Colombo-Alemana de Transportes Aereos (SCADTA). The second editorial enhancement is the reorganization of the listings for the two die types of the 2¢ 1903-08 Washington Shield stamps. The type I perforated and imperforate stamps are now Scott 319 and 320, respectively, and the type II stamps are Scott 319F and 320A, respectively. Error collectors will be pleased to note the addition of 20 new errors, some of which are carried over from the 2012 Vol. 1. Among the more impressive mistakes is a post-printing foldover on a pane of 8¢ Eisenhower stamps (Scott 1394) that yielded four new errors, including stamps printed on the gummed side, and stamps with all three colors and tagging missing.

Several important editorial enhancements have been made in the 2013 edition of the U.S. Specialized. Also more than 7,800 value changes were recorded. For the first time, Scott recognizes the I grills from the 1870-71 Bank Note issues (Scott 134-144) as new major catalogue numbers. These new listings appear in their own section immediately following Scott 144. In a special feature article, respected Bank Note expert Ronald A. Burns explains the history behind the initial grouping of the H and I grills. The second major editorial advance in the 2013 U.S. Specialized catalogue is the introduction of a new section dealing with postal counterfeits, specifically stamps and postal stationery items fraudulently produced to defraud the U.S. Post Office Department/U.S. Postal Service of revenue. he biggest editorial advance in the 2016 catalog is the addition of minor-number listings for imperforate stamps from uncut press sheets without die cuts. In the special feature on page 319, Scott managing editor Charles Snee explains how the popularity of imperforate stamps among collectors and the frustration voiced by stamp dealers who found it difficult to inventory these stamps without a Scott number, caused the Scott editors to rethink its listing policy. Beginning with this 2016 Scott U.S. Specialized catalog, imperf stamps from uncut press sheets without die cuts are listed as minor numbers, which means a lowercase letter is added to the number. The explanatory notes following Scott 2868 and 4693 have been revised to reflect the additions and changes made to the press sheet listings. Catalog users should familiarize themselves with these notes. Values continue to increase for high-grade, scarce covers and rare stamps The trend evident in recent years continues. The market is strong in very high grade stamps, rarities and interesting covers. This trend is not easily seen in the main body of the catalog, where stamps in the grade of very fine are valued. It is more easily seen in the Scott Stamp Values section of the catalog, where the highest grades tend to maintain or even increase their values, even though stamps in lower grades often see dips in value.
