Speeches of Oliver Cromwell
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 101.32 $Although Oliver Cromwell was essentially a man of action, he was also very much a man of the word, whether written or spoken, informal or ceremonial. Fortunately many of his speeches have survived, giving the modern reader the opportunity to glimpse how Cromwell grappled with the unique and unprecedented problems of guiding the country following the first and only execution of an English monarch. Ivan Roots has here gathered together those speeches and recorded conversations of Cromwell that chart the course of his career, that throw light on Cromwell the man as well as on Cromwell the politician, and that illuminate the political and constitutional history of the Protectorate. In the speeches there is, still, as Carlyle put it, 'more of Oliver than in most of the history books about him'.

The Speeches of Micah: A Rhetorical-Historical Analysis (Library Hebrew Bible/Old Testament Studies)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 111.11 $In this important book, Shaw deploys a rigorous and systematic rhetorical analysis in the service of a reconstruction of the historical setting of each of the discourses in Micah. Unlike Muilenburg's 'rhetorical criticism', this approach focuses on the persuasiveness of the discourses, the means by which the author achieves his goal. Among Shaw's tools is the concept of the 'rhetorical situation'. It involves not only the question of the identity of the narratees, but also 'objective' factors like events, conditions and attitudes to which the discourse responds and 'subjective' factors like the speaker's own view of the situation. For each discourse the author analyses its goals and strategy, determining the structure of the speeches, the function of each part in the persuasiveness of the speech, the kinds of proof and the style utilized in order to achieve the author's goals.

Speeches of Fannie Lou Hamer : To Tell It Like It Is
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 3.16 $Most people who have heard of Fannie Lou Hamer (1917–1977) are aware of the impassioned testimony that this Mississippi sharecropper and civil rights activist delivered at the 1964 Democratic National Convention. Far fewer people are familiar with the speeches Hamer delivered at the 1968 and 1972 conventions, to say nothing of addresses she gave closer to home, or with Malcolm X in Harlem, or even at the founding of the National Women's Political Caucus. Until now, dozens of Hamer's speeches have been buried in archival collections and in the basements of movement veterans. After years of combing library archives, government documents, and private collections across the country, Maegan Parker Brooks and Davis W. Houck have selected twenty-one of Hamer's most important speeches and testimonies. As the first volume to exclusively showcase Hamer's talents as an orator, this book includes speeches from the better part of her fifteen-year activist career delivered in response to occasions as distinct as a Vietnam War Moratorium Rally in Berkeley, California, and a summons to testify in a Mississippi courtroom. Brooks and Houck have coupled these heretofore unpublished speeches and testimonies with brief critical descriptions that place Hamer's words in context. The editors also include the last full-length oral history interview Hamer granted, a recent oral history interview Brooks conducted with Hamer's daughter, as well as a bibliography of additional primary and secondary sources. The Speeches of Fannie Lou Hamer demonstrates that there is still much to learn about and from this valiant black freedom movement activist.

Speeches (1910) (The ^AOxford Mark Twain)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 58.16 $One of the most renowned public speakers of his day, Mark Twain was often asked to give speeches to mark public holidays or important anniversaries, for school graduations, at banquets for distinguished visitors, and at events sponsored by charitable organizations, reform groups, and the like. Published a few months after his death, this wide-ranging collection of speeches, spanning more than four decades, covers the gamut of Mark Twain's interests. Here are speeches on women's rights, on cigars and billiards, and on the extension of the copyright law. We find occasional pieces, banquet toasts and introductions that, in addition to being amusing in themselves, provide a vivid glimpse of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century social rituals. Also present are some of Twain's most controversial and daring speeches, such as the notorious "Whittier Birthday" Speech, in which he poked fun at three giants of New England literary culture to the horror of his audience; and "The Babies," which closes with a memorable image of the guest of honor: an infant Ulysses S. Grant attempting to put his toe in his mouth.
