In 1938 James Speyer departed Harvard's School of Design in order to become Mies van der Rohe's first American graduate student at the Armour Institute of Technology in Chicago. During the 40s and 50s he taught architecture under Mies while at the same time, as an architect in his own right, he completed houses in Chicago and Pittsburgh that represented the cutting edge of new glass-and-steel design. In 1957 Speyer traveled to Greece on a Fulbright fellowship, where he taught at the Polytechneon in Athens; upon returning to America, he became Curator of Twentieth Century Painting and Sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago. The dramatic story of the last fifty years of the Speyer banking dynasty, a Jewish family of German descent, is surprisingly little known today, yet at the turn of the twentieth century, Speyer was the third largest investment banking firm in the United States, behind only Morgan and Kuhn, Loeb. It had branches in London, Frankfurt and New York, and the projects it financed included the Southern Pacific Railroad, the London Underground and the infrastructure of the new Cuban republic. Later, it was the first major banking firm to finance Germany's Weimar Republic, as well as providing League of Nations loans to Hungary, Greece and Bulgaria. Yet, the firm was doomed by the nationalist passions aroused by World War I. Its English partner was denaturalised and exiled; its American partner enjoyed reduced standing because of his connection to Germany; and the Frankfurt branch closed with the coming of the Third Reich, its German partner fleeing into exile. The firm was dissolved in 1939, a surprisingly anticlimactic end to one of the great international banking companies of modern times. Located in the middle Rhine valley, the Bishopric of Speyer was a confessionally diverse, primarily rural region dotted with villages and several small cities. In this book, Marc Forster reconstructs and analyzes the history of the Catholic Counter-Reformation there from the later sixteenth to the early eighteenth century.Drawing on a wide variety of archival sources, including visitation reports, Cathedral Chapter minutes, and court records, he examines the impact of the reforms of the Council of Trent on Protestant/Catholic relations, on the nature of popular religion, and on the relationship between the village clergy and their parishioners. Forster demonstrates that the strong confessional loyalties that characterized the villages of the bishopric by about 1700 were rooted in communal loyalty to traditional, pre-Tridentine Catholicism, and that the episcopal hierarchy was also highly traditional and concerned primarily with local issues. As a result, Catholic authorities were reluctant to enforce "reformed" Catholicism, with its emphasis on a celibate and educated clergy and a disciplined and moral laity. This hesitant policy contrasted sharply with the determined effort of the region's Calvinist rulers to suppress traditional religious practices.Forster stresses the tenacity of traditional religiosity and suggests that the confessional loyalties dividing village from village in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Speyer were the result not of state building or a conscious policy of "confessionalization" but of the local population's attachment to long-standing religious practices. A social history that will interest students of religion, village life, popular culture and the development of local elites, his book is an important contribution to one of the most active areas in Reformation and early modern history.

Although he failed to enact his utopian vision of a pietist Jewish society, his collected writings would help shape the religious culture of Ashkenazic Judaism for centuries.In "Sefer Hasidim" and the Ashkenazic Book in Medieval Europe, Ivan G. Marcus proposes a new paradigm for understanding how this particular book was composed. The work, he contends, was an open text written by a single author in hundreds of disjunctive, yet self-contained, segments, which were then combined into multiple alternative versions, each equally authoritative. While Sefer Hasidim offers the clearest example of this model of composition, Marcus argues that it was not unique: the production of Ashkenazic books in small and easily rearranged paragraphs is a literary and cultural phenomenon quite distinct from anything practiced by the Christian authors of northern Europe or the Sephardic Jews of the south. The Pfalz Flugzeug Werke, located at Speyer am Rhein in Bavaria, was the third in the great triumvirate (along with Fokker and Albatros) of German fighter manufacturers in the Great War. When World War I broke out in 1914, Pfalz initially produced copies of the Morane-Saulnier parasol monoplanes for the German air service.
