There is also a larger amount of ceramic, which has been sent to the museum from the first archaeological excavations and research in Pergamon, Miletus, Priene, and Cilicia. About 1710, three life-size marble statues of women were found near Portici on the Bay of Naples. This discovery led to further exploration of the site, which was soon identified as the ancient city of Herculaneum, one of the towns buried in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79. The statues became famous throughout Europe as the “Herculaneum Women.” First brought to Vienna, they have been in the Antiquities Collection in Dresden since 1736. This book presents for the first time in any language the comprehensive story of these famous statues, including their discovery, archaeological context, art history, interpretation—an ongoing debate—and the impact of the Greek statuary types on representations of Roman women throughout the Mediterranean. No other models of the draped female body were used more often in Roman sculpture to carry individual portraits, including those of empresses, than the Large and Small Herculaneum Women.

This volume publishes, for the first time, approximately fifty late Egyptian texts from the Suzuki collection held at Tokai University, Japan. The project is a result of a five-year collaboration between Tokai University, Yale University, Johns Hopkins University, The University of Michigan, and the Staatliche Museum zu Berlin. The texts were purchased by Professor Suzuki mainly in the early 1960s from various dealers in Cairo. The bulk of the collection, now housed in the Department of Asian Civilization, School of Letters at Tokai University as part of the Ancient Egyptian and Near Eastern Collection (AENET), consists of early demotic texts. There is also one late hieratic text concerned with temple land, and a few small Greek fragments from the Byzantine period. The texts published here present an interesting range of document types, a range of demotic handwriting, and a few surprises. Among the more interesting are a rare word list and a new mythological narrative.

The Morgan Library and Museum houses one of the finest and most renowned drawing collections in the world. This publication accompanies the exhibition by the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München in the Pinakothek der Moderne and shows 100 master drawings from the 15th to the 20th century. Ranging from elaborate tableaux sketches to spontaneous studies, the books holds a rich spectrum of drawings picked, as the most distinguished, from the vast Morgan collection. Techniques evident in the anthology include silver-point, chalk, pen and watercolour, all of which are sublimely demonstrated by the European masters. The interesting history of the Morgan collection parallels many of the pieces, including purchases made by the renowned Banker John Pierpoint Morgan (1837-1923), as early as 1909, and some remarkable gifts to and acquisitions by the Library after its public inception in 1924. Masters include the 15th and 16th century virtuosos Tintoretto, Fra Bartolomeo, Parmigianino, del Sarto and Reni, the Spaniards El Greco and Herrera, exponents of the Dutch tradition, from Heemskerck, Rubens and Jordaens to Van Rijn and Lievens, as well as the Germans Strigel, Dürer, Cranach the Elder and Breu the Younger. 17th and 18th century works include those of Poussin, Watteau, Tiepolo Canaletto and Piranesi, while the 19th and 20th centuries are well-represented by the likes of Goya, Ingres, Corot, Degas, Mondrian, Klee Picasso and Pollock.

The Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in Munich houses one of the finest and most famous collections of drawings and prints in Germany, with holdings of around 400,000 works ranging from the fifteenth century to modernity.
