Escape from Paradise: From Third World To First
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 52.31 $Escape from Paradise is a contemporary and true woman's story set in Singapore, Brunei, Australia, England, and the United States. It involves Singapore's famous Tiger Balm family, and a wealthy and mysterious family from Brunei and the link between them, a young Singaporean woman, May Chu Lee. This story of May Chu's escape from her arranged marriage in Singapore to the United States, involves an American, the current British Lord Chancellor, and an ex-CIA agent with Republican Party ties to George Bush, Sr., and now a prominent Washington lobbyist for Burma. For divorce in Singapore, May Chu needed more than a lawyer; she was forced to wage guerilla warfare against a powerful family with business interests in the United States, including an IPO of X-10 Wireless, then under registration with the U. S. Securities and Exchange Commission. From its first paragraph, Escape from Paradise draws the reader into the ambiance of a cosmopolitan Asia never touched upon by any other book.

The Pearl: A Failed Slave Escape on the Potomac [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 28.95 $In the spring of 1848 seventy-six slaves from the nation's capital hid aboard a schooner called the Pearl in an attempt to sail down the Potomac River and up the Chesapeake Bay to freedom in Pennsylvania. When inclement weather forced them to anchor for the night, the fugitive slaves and the ship's crew were captured and returned to Washington. Many of the slaves were sold to the Lower South, and two men sailing the Pearl were tried and sentenced to prison. Recounting this harrowing tale from the preparations for escape through the participants' trial, Josephine Pacheco provides fresh insight into the lives of enslaved blacks in the District of Columbia, putting a human face on the victims of the interstate slave trade, whose lives have been overshadowed by larger historical events. Pacheco also details the Congressional debates about slavery that resulted from this large-scale escape attempt. She contends that although the incident itself and the trials and Congressional disputes that followed were not directly responsible for bringing an end to the slave trade in the nation's capital, they played a pivotal role in publicizing many of the issues surrounding slavery. Eventually, President Millard Fillmore pardoned the operators of the Pearl.

Houdini's Box: The Art of Escape (First Edition) [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.00 $Houdini’s Box explores four different escape artists. There is the case history of the little girl who is oddly committed to playing her own wayward version of hide-and-seek. There is Harry Houdini, “the greatest magician the world has ever seen,” an assimilated Jew and immigrant escapee who compulsively reinvents and re-enacts his own confinement. There is a patient of Phillips’s who has come to him after being badgered by his (ex-) girlfriend, who says she wants to help “his next ex.” He is a man who has become entranced, not with woman as object of desire, but with flight from woman, a man hypnotized by the infinite freedom of escape, always arriving at the place from which he is escaping. And finally, there is the poet Emily Dickinson, who for the last twenty years of her life found freedom in self-imposed solitary confinement. Whether we are getting away from something or getting away with something, we cannot describe ourselves without also describing what we need to escape from and what we want to escape to. In this, his most captivating book to date, Adam Phillips reminds us why people often feel most alive in the very moment of escape.

Western Digital Escape to Reality: The Western World of Maynard Dixon [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 56.62 $In May of 1937, Brigham Young University took possession of 85 paintings and drawings by Maynard Dixon, the groundbreaking artist whose images of the American west—created during long travels and lengthy residences with Native American communities—remain some of the most genuine work in Western Art as a genre. This book, lavishly illustrated with expansive color plates, centers on four texts examining very different topics. Gibbs begins with an account of the Dixon collection at BYU, then moves to a pair of essays exploring the reality, ideology, and abstraction at work in his images of Native Americans and the western landscape. In the final essay, photo historian Deborah Brown Rasiel grapples with the complex artistic influences at play between Dixon and his second wife, photographer Dorothea Lange. The resulting volume serves wonderfully as a visual, historical, and analytical history of an all-too-frequently overlooked artist.

The Voyage of the Catalpa [Neubuch] A Perilous Journey and Six Irish Rebels' Escape to Freedom [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 44.14 $Fast-paced, compelling, meticulously researched, and dramatically detailed, this saga from the annals of American, Irish, British, and Australian history comprises the first full telling of the secret yearlong journey of the American whaling ship Catalpa, under Captain George Anthony, out of New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1875. Risking his own freedom and career, Anthony sailed across international waters to Australia, to rescue from hellish imprisonment the group of British-soldiers-turned-Irish-rebels named "The Fremantle Six." The successful escape and hostility the vulnerable Catalpa overcame both from the British Royal Navy and furious seas make Anthony's historical voyage legendary. 8 pages of photographs add to this true story of daring on the high seas. "Narrated in fascinating and breathtaking fashion. ... The subject matter and fine writing make this book exhilarating."—Associated Press "A seafaring adventure, an Irish nationalist version of Treasure Island." —Chicago Tribune "Truth may routinely be stranger than fiction, but seldom is it as suspenseful as this story."—Publishers Weekly "Genuinely epic ... a fascinating adventure."—Kirkus Review
