Sultanate Architecture of Bengal
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 37.62 $Various indigenous and extraneous elements of Sultanate Architecture of Bengal have been discussed in this book. How these elements are manifest in different monuments of Bengal has also been shown. The idea of mosques and tombs is itself extraneous. Muslim immigrants brought with them many characteristics and traits of architecture from their country of origin. On the other hand many local elements also crept into the joint endeavour of the conquered and conqueror, who created an architecture of a cosmopolitan character. While visiting monuments of this period one can visualise elements from Iran, Central Asia, Egypt and even from Europe vis-a-vis tahtched roofs of rural huts and elements of previous Buddhist and Hindu architectural elements originating from Bengal. Some elements may be classified as indigenous or extraneous without any doubt. But some of these elements give scope for controversy. Elements like glazed tiles and actuate system of buildings etc. are no doubt extraneous elements. On the other hand curved cornices and hut-shaped roofs of buildings etc. are of indigenous origin. Some elements are controversial, such as, small covered type mosques, profuse use of terracotta s, trefoil arched mihrab in the Adina mosque etc. All the monuments describe in this book have been visited by the author starting from 1979 A.D. Main aim and objective of this book is to trace the origin of diifferent elements of Sultanate architecture of Bengal. This book contains six chapters i.e. Sultanate Architecture of Bengal, Different Sultanate Buildings of Bangladesh, Miscellaneous Buildings, Different Elements of Sultanate Architecture of Bengal, Decoration in Sultanate Buildings and Major Findings. These chapters are supported with illustrations, notes, references, bibliography, glossary, colour photographs and will be interest to the scholars, students as well as to the general readers.

Sultanate Architecture of Pre-Mughal India
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 39.23 $The Mughals ruled a united north India for over three centuries, but the roots of the glorious monuments they built are found in earlier provincial styles of architecture. In this richly illustrated work, the author presents the first comprehensive study of the architecture of the Sultanate period. During the pre-Mughal centuries provincial Islamic styles of architecture developed, some of great importance and originality, each a spontaneous movement arising from its respective rulers and the desire to express particular aesthetic ideals. Many factors influenced these regional styles, the most important being the indigenous arts prevailing in the region prior to Islam, the technical ability of the craftsmen, the climate conditions and the strength of the bond each province had with the capital, Delhi. In this book, the author traces the architectural development of each Sultanate. She shows that each provincial style is a synthesis between opposing spiritual and aesthetic concepts faced by the early Muslims in India. Nowhere else in the Islamic world was the clash of values more pronounced. But it is precisely these counteracting forces which released the enormous energy that resulted in the construction of the splendid monuments of the Mughal age. This book evolved out of a series of lectures on Indian architecture given at the Oriental Institute, Oxford, in 1991.

Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 51.74 $The collapse of the Ottoman Empire was by no means a singular event. After six hundred years of ruling over the peoples of North Africa, the Balkans and Middle East, the death throes of sultanate encompassed a series of wars, insurrections, and revolutions spanning the early twentieth century. This volume encompasses a full accounting of the political, economic, social, and international forces that brought about the passing of the Ottoman state. In surveying the many tragedies that transpired in the years between 1908 and 1922, Fall of the Sultanate explores the causes that eventually led so many to view the legacy of the Ottomans with loathing and resentment. The volume provides a retelling of this critical history as seen through the eyes of those who lived through the Ottoman collapse. The story presented here takes into account the perspectives of the empire's diverse population as well as the leaders who piloted the state to its end. In surveying the personal, communal and national struggles that defined Italy's invasion of Libya, the Balkan War, the Great War, and the Turkish War of Independence, Fall of the Sultanate presents readers with a fresh and comprehensive exposition of how and why Ottoman imperial rule ended in bloodshed and disillusionment.

Architecture of a Deccan Sultanate : Courtly Practice and Royal Authority in Late Medieval India
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 50.23 $The Deccan sultans left a grand architectural and artistic legacy. They commissioned palaces, mosques, gardens and tombs as well as decorative paintings and coins. Of these sultanates, the Nizam Shahs (r. 1490-1636) were particularly significant, being one of the first to emerge from the crumbling edifice of the Bahmani Empire (c. 1347-1527). Yet their rich material record remains largely unstudied in the scholarly literature, obscuring their cultural and historical importance. This book provides the first analysis of the architecture of the Nizam Shahs. Pushkar Sohoni examines the critical relationship between architectural production, courtly practice and royal authority in a period when the aspirations and politics of the kingdom were articulated through architectural expression. Based on new primary research from key sites including the urban settlements of Ahmadnagar, Daulatabad, Aurangabad, Junnar and the port city of Chaul, Sohoni sheds light on broader Islamicate ideas of kingship and shows how this was embodied by material artefacts such as buildings and sites, paintings, gardens, guns and coins. As well as offering a vivid depiction of sixteenth-century South Asia, this book revises understanding of the cultural importance of the Nizam Shahs and their place in the Indian Ocean world. It will be a vital primary resource for scholars researching the history of the medieval and early modern Deccan and relevant for those working in Art History, Islamic Studies, South Asian Studies and Archaeology.

Metal Hoard from 'Ibri / Selme Sultanate of Oman [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 109.00 $The accidental discovery of the hoard of metal weapons, bangles, and vessels in the desert plain called Selme in August of 1979 evoked a complicated chain of events which led to the final publication. The Department of Antiquities and foreign experts cooperated to preserve the finds, which were threatened by progressive corrosion, and see the documentation and publication through to its end. The finds were restored and studied metallurgically in the German Mining Museum. Other projects on the archaeology of Oman which took place at the same time yielded much additional information on the hoard and its historical importance. 508 metal artefacts comprise the hoard itself and 82 stone and ceramic vessels belong to the tomb in which the hoard was hidden. This is the largest metal hoard ever found in the ancient Near East. It is studied from the standpoint of the metallurgy of the finds and their prehistoric context. The Selme hoard is a main source for the prehistoric metalwork of South-eastern Arabia. äà the usual impeccable standard of the Prähistorische Bronzefunde series.ô Antiquity .
