A Path for Freedom describes a little understood activity of poets and writers of Württemberg in the first half of the nineteenth century. These writers, the majority of whom are consigned by historians to the 'Biedermeier' or conservative camp, were in fact engaged in what is here called the liberal project, using their writing to further the cause of constitutional liberalism. Poets like Uhland and Kerner, and lesser known journalists such as Friedrich List and Rudolf Lohbauer, were engaged in working within the system to further the liberal cause; nonetheless, many of them served terms in prison for their actions. Professor Doerksen's book follows such figures beyond the pages of literary history to observe the Württemberg writers in their political roles and as literary combatants. This cross-disciplinary study will be of interest not only to Germanists but also to historians of social thought and German political movements of the nineteenth century.

Justinus Kerner (1786-1862) was one of the most celebrated figures in nineteenth-century German culture. A physician by training, he was also a leading member of the Swabian Romantic circle of poets which included, among others, Ludwig Uhland and Gustav Schwab. Kerner's international fame rests primarily on his contributions to the investigation of paranormal phenomena. The most important of these was his exhaustive case study, Die Seherin von Prevorst (The Seeress of Prevorst, 1829). The book was translated into English in 1849 by the English writer, Catherine Crowe (1803-76). Until the present, this has been the only work of Kerner available in English. Apart from his many scientific publications and his poetry, Kerner was also the author of one of the more intriguing literary works of German Romanticism, Die Reiseschatten (Travel Shadows, 1811). Ostensibly an account of his travels through Germany and Austria following his graduation from the University of Tubingen, the book is a highly imaginative, almost surreal concoction of Romantic, sentimental, grotesque, satirical, and Old German folkloric elements. Attributed by Kerner to an itinerant "shadow performer" named Lux, Travel Shadows was inspired by the tradition of "Chinese Shadows" (ombres chinoises) and represents Kerner's attempt to create a travel narrative in the form of a grandiose shadow show. In the introduction to his translation of Travel Shadows - the first in English - Harold B. Segel situates Kerner's work in the context of the emergence of a German shadow show tradition in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Described as a "contribution to Danube Swabian Heritage and Home Country Research," 2,500 copies were reportedly printed. Prior to World War II, there were a reported 540,000 Germans in Yugoslavia, of whom 95,000 were drafted into the German, Hungarian, or Croatian armies, and 245,000 of whom were evacuated to Germany. Of the remaining 200,000, the book purports to document that 64,000 were, in one way or another, "mortal victims" of premeditated genocide occurring between 1944 and 1948 under the direction of Tito. Many ethnic German civilians who had lived in the area for generations were tortured and slain by partisan fighters in raids of reprisal by Yugoslav forces. According to the authors, about 51,000 ethnic Germans were systematically killed in civilian death camps by starvation and intentionally controlled epidemics. The remainder were believed killed in less organized ways, mostly partisan raids.
