Pura Besakih is the paramount Hindu temple on Bali. Located high on the slopes of the volcano Mt Agung, it has developed over more than a thousand years into a great complex of 22 separate temples, the largest and central being Pura Penataran Agung. The annual cycle of more than seventy rituals, which symbolically link the temples into a whole, culminates in the centenary ceremony called Ekadasa Rudra (last held in 1979). The temple complex, state-supported at least since the fifteenth century, has undergone a series of architectural and ritual changes. This study combines an analysis of textual and historical sources with the fieldwork methods of anthropology in creating a unified interpretation of this great temple.

The first comprehensive history of Balinese politics from the middle of the 17th century till the end of Dutch colonial rule in 1942, this study is based on extensive research in colonial archives in the Netherlands and Indonesia, a variety of Balinese historical narratives, interviews with former colonial officials as well as many Balinese, combined with data concerning temples, rituals, and oral histories gathered during twelve months of fieldwork in South Bali.Balinese history is traced by means of a collective biography of the Mengwi dynasty, describing the rise to power, the formation and expansion of a negara, the subsequent crises, and its fall in 1891. The political system in Bali was complex and fragile, owing to the dynamic relationships between leaders and followers, temple systems and royal rituals, irrigation and taxation, and slave trade and warfare, which are brought together here into a single analytical framework.Between 1906 and 1942 Bali became part of the Dutch colonial state and experienced bureaucratic rule and processes that resulted in a 'traditionalization' of Balinese kingship and culture. Focusing on the descendants of the Mengwi dynasty and their subjects, the author describes the local practices of colonialism, which finally resulted in hardship and poverty during the economic depression of the 1930s. The story of the Mengwi dynasty under colonial rule ended in a conflict between one faction that sought to expand its power through collaboration with the Dutch and another faction that tried to preserve its old royal authority. This conflict had an unexpected but devastating outcome.

Since the downfall of Soeharto in 1998 many autobiographical writings have appeared in Indonesia from the pens of those who were marginalized by his so-called New Order regime. This book examines representative autobiographies of several such individuals: two ex-political prisoners who describe themselves as Muslim Communists; two writers of the left, one a woman in a senior position in the left-wing women's organization, Gerwani, and one a well-known male novelist who spent years in exile in China and Russia; two Muslim opponents of Soeharto, one an intellectual and the other a political campaigner; and finally, two collections of short autobiographies by the younger generation, one a group involved in social welfare action, the other a group of dedicated young Muslims.The scrutiny of the texts is in all cases preceded by a brief account of the historical and cultural context of the writing of the autobiographies. In the analysis of the works themselves the emphasis is on trying to represent the implicit tone of the narrative as much as its overt contents. Both general and specialist readers are consequently invited to reflect on the memories and experiences of significant participant-observers as a mode of understandig a recent period in Indonesian history.
