Talmudic Stories: Narrative Art, Composition, and Culture
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 51.79 $Winner of the National Jewish Book Award from the Jewish Book CouncilHow should we understand the stories of the Babylonian Talmud? Where do they come from? Why are they in the Talmud? How do they relate to Talmudic law? In Talmudic Stories, Jeffrey Rubenstein deepens our appreciation for the complexity of these texts by drawing attention to the literary aspects and cultural contexts that are essential to understanding their narrative art, meanings, and importance. Focusing on six famous stories of the Babylonian Talmud and discussing many others in relation to these, Rubenstein's analysis illuminates the ways in which the rabbis used narratives to grapple with fundamental tensions of their culture. The book also features an appendix including the original Hebrew/Aramaic texts for the reader's reference.

Nine Talmudic Readings
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 36.94 $Nine rich and masterful readings of the Talmud by the French Jewish philosopher Emmanuel Levinas translate Jewish thought into the language of modern times. Between 1963 and 1975, Levinas delivered these commentaries at the annual Talmudic colloquia of a group of French Jewish intellectuals in Paris. In this collection, Levinas applies a hermeneutic that simultaneously allows the classic Jewish texts to shed light on contemporary problems and lets modern problems illuminate the texts. Besides being quintessential illustrations of the art of reading, the essays express the deeply ethical vision of the human condition that makes Levinas one of the most important thinkers of our time.

Partition Problems in Talmudic Reasoning
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 33.92 $This book deals with a problem that has been discussed quite a lot, both in the academic and the halachic literature, the problem of partitioning. The fundamental and well-known partition problem in the Talmud is the partition of lost property (“Two hold a garment”) found in Baba Metzia 2a, and its generalisation (“n hold a garment”). The Talmud also deals with the problem of division of the estate of a deceased among creditors in Ketubot 93a. Our aim is to organise previous work, give a complete picture of the domain and add our original work. We specify what the basic assumptions are, similarities and dissimilarities between the problems and the various approaches to their solution. We give general case algorithms for these solutions. Where necessary we also prove the existence and uniqueness of the solutions. The book is partly in English and partly in Hebrew
