Arts and Crafts of Tamilnadu
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 48.23 $The dividing line between art and craft in Tamilnadu is not easily discernible. With an uninterrupted classical heritage, its craft forms were transformed into works of art - the village terracottas became the great bronzes, the wood carvings became splendid monuments in stone. Unlike other parts of India, Tamilnadu's geographic location in the far south protected it from extraneous influences and made for a certain insularity of culture which strengthened the styles from within.

Stigmas Of The Tamil Stage : An Ethnography Of Special Drama Artists In South India
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 39.39 $A study of the lives of popular theater artists, Stigmas of the Tamil Stage is the first in-depth analysis of Special Drama, a genre of performance unique to the southernmost Indian state of Tamilnadu. Held in towns and villages throughout the region, Special Drama performances last from 10 p.m. until dawn. There are no theatrical troupes in Special Drama; individual artists are contracted “specially” for each event. The first two hours of each performance are filled with the kind of bawdy, improvisational comedy that is the primary focus of this study; the remaining hours present more markedly staid dramatic treatments of myth and history. Special Drama artists themselves are of all ages, castes, and ethnic and religious affiliations; the one common denominator in their lives is their lower-class status. Artists regularly speak of how poverty compelled their entrance into the field. Special Drama is looked down upon by the middle- and upper-classes as too popular, too vulgar, and too “mixed.” The artists are stigmatized: people insult them in public and landlords refuse to rent to them. Stigma falls most heavily, however, on actresses, who are marked as “public women” by their participation in Special Drama. As Susan Seizer’s sensitive study shows, one of the primary ways the performers deal with such stigma is through humor and linguistic play. Their comedic performances in particular directly address questions of class, culture, and gender deviations—the very issues that so stigmatize them. Seizer draws on extensive interviews with performers, sponsors, audience members, and drama agents as well as on careful readings of live Special Drama performances in considering the complexities of performers’ lives both on stage and off.

The Four Hundred Songs of War and Wisdom
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 51.76 $Two prominent translators present the first complete English-language edition of one of India's greatest works of classical literature: the Purananuru. This anthology of four hundred poems by more than 150 poets between the first and third centuries CE in old Tamil―the literary language of ancient Tamilnadu―was composed before Aryan influence had penetrated the south. It is thus a unique testament to pre-Aryan India.Beyond its importance for understanding the development of South Asia's history, culture, religion, and linguistics, the Purananuru is a great work of literature, reflecting accurately and profoundly the life of southern India 2,000 years ago. One of the few works of classical India that confronts life without the insulation of a philosophical facade and that makes no basic assumptions about karma and the afterlife, the Purananuru has universal appeal. It faces the world as a great and unsolved mystery, delving into living and dying, despair, love, poverty, and the changing nature of existence. To this hidden gem of world literature George L. Hart and Hank Heifetz add a helpful appendix, an annotated bibliography, and an excellent introduction describing the work and placing it in its social and historical context.

Siva And Her Sisters: Gender, Caste, And Class In Rural South India (Studies in the Ethnographic Imagination)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 51.19 $This book examines two subordinated groups untouchables” and women in a village in Tamilnadu, South India. The lives and work of untouchable” women in this village provide a unique analytical focus that clarifies the ways in which three axes of identity gender, caste, and class are constructed in South India. Karin Kapadia argues that subordinated groups do not internalize the values of their masters but instead reject them in innumerable subtle ways.Kapadia contends that elites who hold economic power do not dominate the symbolic means of production. Looking at the everyday practices, rituals, and cultural discourses of Tamil low castes, she shows how their cultural values repudiate the norms of Brahminical elites. She also demonstrates that caste and class processes cannot be fully addressed without considering their interrelationship with gender.
