Physiological Pharmaceutics (Taylor & Francis Series in Pharmaceutic)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 33.72 $In recent years, the emphasis in drug development has been the design of new delivery systems rather than new drugs. It is the aim of innovative pharmaceutical scientists to design the new dosage forms to overcome the body's barrier mechanisms which have specifically evolved to exclude foreign material. This book provides an integrated approach to the study of drug formulation in the body with the emphasis on the formulation variables rather than the drugs. The link between physiology and pharmaceutics is presented to give an essential background of biological principles for the pharmacy student, pharmaceutical formulator and healthcare professional. Complex mathematical aspects of physical chemistry have been avoided to facilitate understanding, enabling the reader to concentrate on how the biological environment affects the performance of the drugs and dosage forms. As the majority of drugs are administered via the oral route a large proportion of the book is devoted to the gastrointestinal tract and the variation in the capacity for drug absorption which occurs along its length. Transdermal, ocular, pulmonary and nasal drug delivery are discussed in detail. New chapters in the book include 'Vaginal drug delivery', the 'Blood brain barrier' and 'Parenteral drug delivery'.

Suspicious Moderate : The Life and Writings of Francis À Sancta Clara 1598-1680
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 82.56 $The historiography of English Catholicism has grown enormously in the last generation, led by scholars such as Peter Lake, Michael Questier, Stefania Tutino, and others. In Suspicious Moderate, Anne Ashley Davenport makes a significant contribution to that literature by presenting a long overdue intellectual biography of the influential English Catholic theologian Francis à Sancta Clara (1598–1680). Born into a Protestant family in Coventry at the end of the sixteenth century, Sancta Clara joined the Franciscan order in 1617. He played key roles in reviving the English Franciscan province and in the efforts that were sponsored by Charles I to reunite the Church of England with Rome. In his voluminous Latin writings, he defended moderate Anglican doctrines, championed the separation of church and state, and called for state protection of freedom of conscience. Suspicious Moderate offers the first detailed analysis of Sancta Clara's works. In addition to his notorious Deus, natura, gratia (1634), Sancta Clara wrote a comprehensive defense of episcopacy (1640), a monumental treatise on ecumenical councils (1649), and a treatise on natural philosophy and miracles (1662). By carefully examining the context of Sancta Clara's ideas, Davenport argues that he aimed at educating English Roman Catholics into a depoliticized and capacious Catholicism suited to personal moral reasoning in a pluralistic world. In the course of her research, Davenport also discovered that "Philip Scot," the author of the earliest English discussions of Hobbes (a treatise published in 1650), was none other than Sancta Clara. Davenport demonstrates how Sancta Clara joined the effort to fight Hobbes's Erastianism by carefully reflecting on Hobbes's pioneering ideas and by attempting to find common ground with him, no matter how slight.

Francis Bacon In Your Blood Format: Hardcover
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.98 $In June of 1963, when Michael Peppiatt first met Francis Bacon, the former was a college boy at Cambridge, the latter already a famous painter, more than thirty years his senior. And yet, Peppiatt was welcomed into the volatile artist's world; Bacon, considered by many to be "mad, bad, and dangerous to know," proved himself a devoted friend and father figure, even amidst the drinking and gambling. Though Peppiatt would later write perhaps the definitive biography of Bacon, his sharply drawn memoir has a different vigor, revealing the artist at his most intimate and indiscreet, and his London and Paris milieus in all their seediness and splendor. Bacon is felt with immediacy, as Peppiatt draws from contemporary diaries and records of their time together, giving us the story of a friendship, and a new perspective on an artist of enduring fascination.

Michael Collins: In His Own Words
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 57.45 $In the pages of this book, Francis Costello allows Michael Collins to speak in his own words. He traces Collins's career from his school days to his tragic death at the age of 31, through a series of edited extracts from Collins's writings, speeches, letters and memoranda. Using a chronological narrative, Costello provides linking text to set the context for each extract from Collins. He draws his material from sources as diverse as printed books, the Collins papers in the National Library of Ireland, the Military History Bureau of the Department of Defence, Dail Reports, contemporary newspaper accounts and the private papers of many who came into contact with Collins. The Michael Collins revealed in these pages is a complex, multi-faced man: politician; head of intelligence; Minister for Finance; friend and lover. Getting behind the myth, this book shows us the real Collins - in his own words.
