Ancient Rights and Future Comfort: Bihar, the Bengal Tenancy Act of 1885, and British Rule in India: 13 (London Studies on South Asia)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 74.42 $This book analyses the character of British rule in nineteenth-century India, by focusing on the underlying ideas and the practical repercussions of agrarian policy. It argues that the great rent law debate and the Bengal Tenancy Act of 1885 helped constitute a revolution in the effective aims of government and in the colonial ability to interfere in India, but that they did so alongside a continuing weakness of understanding and in effective local control. In particular, the book considers the importance of notions of historical rights and economic progress to the false categorisations made of agrarian structure. It shows that the Tenancy Act helped to widen social disparities in rural Bihar, and to create political interests on the land.

Feet of Fines for the County of York from 1314 to 1326 (Yorkshire Archaeological Soc Record Series) [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 32.27 $Feet of fines are a major source for genealogy and local history. The fine was originally an agreement made by licence of the court between parties to a law suit, but by 1314 it had become a convenient and secure means of conveying a freehold estate, establishing or breaking an entail, establishing a tenancy for life or providing for the remainder of an estate held in dower. The text of the fine was written three times on a piece of parchment with one copy running across the foot and the other two, head to head, at right angles to it. The parchment was then cut to separate the three copies, the two indentures being handed to the parties, while the `foot of fine' was retained as the record of the court. This volume summarises 668 fines relating to Yorkshire for the years 1314-1326, including a significantly increased number for 1319-1320 and 1322-1324, when the Court of Common Pleas sat at York during Edward II's Scottish campaigns. The topographical and chronological arrangement and standard format of fines, relatively easy to search, makes them of special value to family and local historians.

An Exuberant Catalogue of Dreams: The Americans Who Revived the Country House in Britain
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 6.84 $For centuries Britain’s country houses had been the exclusive preserve of their traditional landed gentry of lords and ladies, their tenancy legitimized by time-honored ancestry and the accident of birth. But starting in the late nineteenth century an entirely different kind of proprietor began to take up residence. American money – lots of it – came across the Atlantic, in the form of wealthy, eligible heiresses like the Vanderbilts’, and fabulously wealthy industrialists and self-made men like William Waldorf Astor and newspaper magnate Randolph Hearst.Their money purchased grand houses like Cliveden, St Donat’s and Leeds Castle; it saved vast piles like Blenheim from dereliction and decay; it brought modern facilities like electric lighting and hot water, Art Deco interior styling and, in the case of houses like North Mymms, turned them into magnificent repositories of cultural artefacts to rival New York’s Frick Collection. Not infrequently the American newcomer (usually female) found the world of the English aristocracy they had married into to be dauntingly austere and emotionally starved; others, like Chips Channon, or May Goelet at Scotland’s Floors Castle, brought a gay, hedonistic sociability. Still other Americans, like Lawrence Johnston laying out the garden at Hidcote or latterly John Paul Getty with his idyllic cricket ground at Wormsley, successfully managed to make themselves more English than the English.Clive Aslet’s fabulously illustrated book is the first study of this remarkable and unlikely juxtaposition of two very different cultures, which changed the architecture, the society and the character of English country houses forever.

The Law of Succession: Wills, Trusts, and Estates (University Casebook Series)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.76 $This is a completely new trusts and estates casebook and takes a new approach in its material and structure. The book includes a toolbox section, introducing students early on to the basics of wills, trusts, powers, joint tenancies, life insurance, and miscellaneous other forms. Thus, this book organizes material around planning properly, rather than around litigation. The book also covers barriers to succession, such as the rule against perpetuities, slayer statutes, revocation, and litigation (mental capacity, no-contest clauses, and the like). Rather than including long and lightly edited cases, this book utilizes several case squibs that illustrate different factual scenarios for each legal issue followed by the court’s decision and reasoning. The book also includes many statutes with lengthy analyses of the different types of statutes using the UPC as the primary model. The author also includes practice points, tax tips, and technology traps throughout the entire book. There are numerous problems throughout the materials, with the answers located at the back of the book.

Historical Archaeologies of Capitalism (Contributions to Global Historical Archaeology) [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.00 $American things, American material culture, and American archaeology are the themes of this book. The authors use goods used or made in America to illuminate issues such as tenancy, racism, sexism, and regional bias. Contributors utilize data about everyday objects - from tin cans and bottles to namebrand items, from fish bones to machinery - to analyze the way American capitalism works. Their cogent analyses take us literally from broken dishes to the international economy. Especially notable chapters examine how an archaeologist formulates questions about exploitation under capitalism, and how the study of artifacts reveals African-American middle class culture and its response to racism.
