Adela Pankhurst: The Wayward Suffragette 1885–1961 (Melbourne University Press Australian Lives S)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.13 $As the youngest daughter of the famous British suffragette family, Adela Pankhurst's life began as it would continue: among thinkers and activists. She was arrested for her part in the fight for female suffrage in the United Kingdom but, after differences with her mother, Emmeline Pankhurst, she was sent to Australia before votes for women were won.Arriving in Melbourne in 1914, Adela was quickly involved with the women's movement and the anti-war and anti-conscription movements. Wayward and passionate, Adela Pankhurst zigzagged from cause to cause. She was a founding member of the Communist Party of Australia, but later became involved with the extreme right-wing Australia First movement. During her fast-paced life she managed to offend socialists, communists, trade unionists, patriots, pacifists, feminists, nationalists, imperialists and conservatives.Verna Coleman vividly brings this extraordinary woman to life. Feisty, eager and inspirational, Adela Pankhurst brought a wholehearted commitment to her various campaigns, and to read her biography is to be caught up in the heady excitement of some of the most significant political causes of the twentieth century.

Aboriginal Art Creativity and Assimilation [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 48.76 $Donna Leslie, a Post-doctoral Research Fellow at The University of Melbourne, sets out to demonstrate how Aboriginal art has questioned the 'assimilationist' policies which prevailed in Australia from the 1930s to the 1970s. Her rigorous and sustained argument, supported by an impressive array of important visual images, reveals an extensive grasp of issues relating not only to the practice and history of art, but also in fields of anthropology, ethnology and sociology. The book is a rare presentation of aspects of the history of Aboriginal art from an Aboriginal perspective, and provides fresh ways of understanding Aboriginal experience. While the author acknowledges the problems faced by Aboriginal peoples, particularly those associated with the former policy of assimilation, her message is positive and encourages a deepening understanding of Aboriginal art, culture and peoples in the spirit of reconciliation. Moreover, she addresses the development of Aboriginal art in the modern Australian city, as well as in the more traditional environment of the land.

Redmond Barry (Paperback) [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 48.01 $Sir Redmond Barry was the pre-eminent figure in Melbourne of the middle years of last century. A Supreme Court judge for thirty years, he was the founding and sustaining force behind the University of Melbourne, the Supreme Court Library, the Public Library, the National Gallery and the Museum. As social and cultural benefactor, he stands alone.Paradox pervaded his life. While seen by many as a hidebound, even villainous judge, his trust in the rule of law underpinned, for example, an unusually sympathetic and active response to the Aboriginal people. Yet fear of losing social standing and his Irish family's esteem blinkered him to injustice on his own doorstep. The story of his unacknowledged relationship of thirty years with Louisa Barrow, and of their four illegitimate children, is perplexing and often painful in the telling. This important biography is long overdue.

Jumping Ship: From The Heart Of Corporate Australia To The World Of Social Investment [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 28.49 $As an ambitious, competitive kid from a public school, who grew up in a country town in Victoria, Michael Traill converted privileged education opportunities in the hallowed halls of Melbourne University's Trinity College and the Harvard Business School into a highly paid and successful career at Macquarie Bank, often called the millionaire's factory. But a career devoted to money-making - for himself and his clients - was never going to satisfy Michael's deeper yearnings: his passion for social justice; his determination to make the world a better place. So at the peak of his career and only in his early forties he decided to leave merchant banking behind. His vision was to bring the rigour and hard-headedness of the world of finance to the world of philanthropy and social entrepreneurship. In Jumping Ship Michael Traill tells the candid and inspiring story of the journey that took him from a modest small town in Morwell to the millionaire's factory and then on to founding a unique Australian non-profit success story. This led to being a key architect, along with a group of financial high-fliers, who found a way to run a multi-million dollar business devoted entirely to the creation of social good rather than profit. In the process they were at the forefront of addressing social disadvantage and reshaping the Australian non-profit landscape.
