Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.37 $This third and final part of the three-volume history of the Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment'tells of the last decade in the unit’s existence before it was amalgamated with its neighbouring unit, the Royal East Kent Regiment - the Buffs - to form the Royal Kent Regiment in 1961. The final ten years in the old unit’s life was as eventful as any in its history as it held the line while Britain gave independence to many of its former colonies. The regiment’s First Battalion saw service from April 1951 to February 1954, in the ‘Malayan Emergency’ - Britain’s successful containment of a Communist guerilla campaign. The First Battalion also took part in a far less happy post-colonial episode, the Anglo-French occupation of Egypt’s Suez Canal in 1956. Almost immediately, It then embarked from Port Said for Cyprus to help deal with the Emergency caused by the Greek Cypriot guerilla group EOKA and its campaign for unity (‘Enosis’) with Greece. The book concludes with the smooth amalgamation of the two Kent regiments, each with their own distinguished history. Unlikely Heroes: A Chronicle of the Men of Company H, 2nd Battalion, 291st Regiment, 75th Infantry Division in World War II
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 28.52 $They were the youngest US Army Division to serve in Europe in World War II. They were called the "Diaper Division", averaging just 18 or 19 years old. They had limited training and were considered unsuitable for combat. This is the story of the men of Company H, 2nd Battalion, 291st Regiment, 75th Infantry Division: their bravery, sacrifices, and the bonds of friendship that kept them alive and helped them to liberate Europe from Nazi tyranny. These young men entered combat at a critical point in the Battle of the Bulge, lacking food, supplies, and winter clothing; in fact the only thing they did not lack was courage. The 75th Division defended the American Army's flank from a direct assault by two German SS Panzer Divisions. Their contribution to the battle resulted in the collapse of the German Bulge, earning their place in history as the "Bulge Busters." They went on to fight a fierce battle high in the Vosges Mountains of Colmar, France and pushed out the remnants of the German Army from French soil. They moved through Holland, crossed the Rhine, and fought a major battle in Central Germany in a town called Castrop-Rauxel, that was the center of German industry in the Ruhr Valley. They went to war as green kids, but truly became unlikely heroes.

Rufus Dawes of the Iron Brigade: Service with the Sixth Wisconsin Volunteers During the American Civil War
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.68 $With the Iron Brigade on campaign and battlefield For students of the American Civil War, the name Rufus Dawes will be forever associated with the famous Iron Brigade of the Union Army-that hardy and courageous assembly of regiments from the western states whose steadfastness in the thickest of battlefield conflicts earned them their descriptive nickname. Born in 1838, Dawes was just 23 years old when the Civil War broke out and he became a captain in the 6th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, the regiment he would, in time, come to famously command. Dawes was always an ardent and aggressive battlefield commander. He served with the regiment at Groveton, Antietam, Fredericksburg and through the Chancellorsville campaign. At Gettysburg he notably led the counter-attack on Davis's Confederate brigade sheltering in a railway cutting and there took some 200 prisoners. Dawes served at Mine Run, the Wilderness Campaign, the sieges of Petersburg and Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor in 1864. Worn out physically and mentally, Dawes was mustered out after three years of the most intensive combat-he was just 26 years old. The following year he was promoted to brevet brigadier general. This book, Dawes' own account of his regiment of 'Black Hats' of the Iron Brigade, is an acknowledged classic of the period. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

The Sixth of Seven Wives: Escape from Modern Day Polygamy
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 81.11 $This is the most unique story written about modern day polygamy and chronicles the teenage years and sixteen-year marriage of the author. Mary Mackert was born into a family with a history rich in the traditions of fundamental Mormonism. The author shares her private thoughts and feelings as a seventeen-year-old bride facing an arranged marriage to a forty-nine-year-old man that has five other wives. The forbidden love she has for a young man displeases her parents. Obedience and submission to her parents in all things is required for her to see heaven. While her young sweetheart is on a mission she succumbs to the pressures of her family and resigns herself to a marriage of religious duty to a man older than her father. She pressures her father to hurry the marriage arrangements for her true love will return and she cannot face him. She cannot look into his eyes and say that she does not love him. Witness the sorrow and grief of her wedding day. Experience the struggles of her sixteen-year marriage that spawned her courage to flee from this religious bondage. Two days after leaving her husband, she is abducted and locked in her bedroom. During the day-and-a-half she is a prisoner, her husband's attempts to persuade her to return include pleading, preaching, condemnation, and threats of blood atonement execution for her supposed indiscretions. The Sixth of Seven Wives is an inspiring account of one woman's courage to flee from the secret society of her birth and enter the world she'd been taught to fear to obtain a better life for her children.
