Wholeness of Nature : Goethe's Way Toward a Science of Conscious Participation in Nature
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 28.11 $Whereas most readers are familiar with Goethe as a poet and dramatist, few are familiar with his scientific work. In this brilliant book, Henri Bortoft (who began his studies of Goethean science with J. G. Bennett and David Bohm) introduces the fascinating scientific theories of Goethe. He succeeds in showing that Goethe’s way of doing science was not a poet’s folly but a genuine alternative to the dominant scientific paradigm. Bortoft shows that a different, "gentler" kind of empiricism is possible than that demanded by the dualizing mind of modern technological science and demonstrates that Goethe’s participatory phenomenology of a new way of seeing―while far from being a historical curiosity―in fact proposes a practical solution to the dilemmas of contemporary, postmodern science. If you read only one book on Goethan science, this should be the one!

Football's Comic Book Heroes
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 103.18 $Ever since comics for boys were first published in the late 19th century, they have offered their readers fun, adventure, and escapism. As participation and attendance at sports events rose dramatically during the first half of the 20th century, boys’ comics began to regularly feature sportsmen of all types, and soccer players became the ultimate favorite. The introduction of soccer comics presented in a cartoon-strip format became immensely popular during the 1960s, with Rover, Hotspur, and Wizard among the top titles. Although these comics are no longer in circulation, there is still a significant level of interest, and the culture of the comic-book hero continues. Renowned publisher D.C. Thomson has delved into its archives to produce the definitive document of the most legendary soccer playing characters to grace the pages of comics, including such favourites as Limp Along Leslie, Roy Race, Billy Dane, and Hotshot Hamish. Extensively researched to cover the history and the storylines associated with these comics and their heroes, this is a unique, nostalgic account of the soccer comic book phenomenon that will jog the memories of older readers and introduce the magic of these imaginary sporting stars to a new generation.

Theologian of Resistance: The Life and Thought of Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 46.11 $Since Dietrich Bonhoeffer's death in 1945, executed by the Nazis as a political dissident, he has continued to fascinate and compel readers as a theologian, witness, and martyr. Bonhoeffer's theological brilliance, committed discipleship, ecumenical insight, and courageous participation in the struggle against fascism have profoundly shaped contemporary Christian understanding and action. In John W. de Gruchy's estimate, had Bonhoeffer lived "he might have dominated the theological scene in the second half of the twentieth century in succession to Karl Barth, Rudolf Bultmann, and Paul Tillich. As it was, he became the paradigmatic martyr-theologian" for our time. In this new biography, Christiane Dietz masterfully portrays the interconnectedness of Bonhoeffer's life and thought, theology and politics, discipleship, witness, and resistance, tracing the path from his childhood to his imprisonment and execution. Brief, lucid, and imminently accessible, Tietz's new account brings Bonhoeffer's story and work to life in a vivid retelling, unfolding his important and widely read texts, and including new, previously unseen pictures.

Mexicans at War. Mexican Military Aviation in the Second World War 1941-1945
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.31 $This book introduces the reader to an unknown Ally of the Second World War. Few people remember that Mexico, like Brazil, took an active part in that conflict. This volume covers Mexican participation in the Second World War for the first time using photos, documents and testimony from official and personal archives. Mexican nationals or those of Mexican descent were already volunteering for the Allied air forces of the British Commonwealth and the Free French naval and air forces While the Mexican Republic first had to defend both its coasts and its shipping from enemy submarines, using its obsolete general purpose biplanes, following the sinking of Mexican ships by German u-boats the first North American Texan armed trainers entered service in the Gulf of Mexico, earning the title of the ‘Mexican Dive Bomber’. Due to the necessities of the war, the service had to reorganize its aviation assets to be able to receive a larger number of American-built lease aircraft, which started the modernization and reorganization process that is felt even today. The war affected all aspect of Mexican military aviation from tactical units, to training, to logistics and military doctrine. This also led to the establishment of Mexican Naval Aviation which led, in turn, to the creation of its first naval squadron to patrol the Gulf of Mexico. One aspect that the war affected was the training of the new generation of military personnel, some of whom would later see action before the end of the war. As Mexico was securing its coasts and sending aviation personnel to train in the USA, it would later field its fighter squadron to participate in the liberation of the Philippine islands. By the end of the war the Mexican Air Force had experienced its most rapid growth since it was officially established back in February 1915. The text is fully supported by numerous previously unpublished photographs and color profiles showing camouflage and markings.

Christina Rossetti and the Bible
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 169.02 $Through theologically-engaged close readings of her poetry and devotional prose, this book explores how Christina Rossetti draws on the Bible and encourages her Victorian readers to respond to its radical message of grace.
