Zwischen Kraus und Parsenow entwickelte sich ein lebhafter Briefwechsel: 150 Briefe und Karten von Kete Parsenow an Karl Kraus haben sich aus den Jahren 1910 bis 1930 erhalten; seine Antworten sind verloren. Die charismatische Schauspielerin war seit 1914 mit dem Klassischen Philologen Walter F. Otto verheiratet, einem begeisterten Leser von Karl Kraus. Dieser schlug Kraus 1926 zum Nobelpreis vor. 1934 zog das Ehepaar nach Königsberg. Dort ging 1945 im Feuersturm der untergehenden Stadt alles verloren: Manuskripte, Briefe, die Bibliothek. Die Arbeit berücksichtigt vorreformatorische, katholische, lutherische und reformierte Texte und revidiert mithilfe bislang unausgewerteter Quellen das überkommene Bild einer protestantischen Skepsis gegenüber dem geistlichen Spiel. Im Ergebnis zeigt sich: Die Theatergeschichtsschreibung hat die Persistenzen spätmittelalterlicher Frömmigkeit, die interkonfessionellen Verflechtungen und die innerkonfessionellen Widersprüchlichkeiten in den Dramentraditionen der Reformationszeit bislang unterschätzt.
