The Burial at Thebes
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 104.91 $Commissioned to mark the centenary of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin in 2004, The Burial at Thebes is Seamus Heaney's new verse translation of Sophocles' great tragedy, Antigone - whose eponymous heroine is one of the most sharply individualized and compelling figures in western drama. Faithful to the 'local row' and to the fierce specificity of the play's time and place, The Burial at Thebes honours the separate and irreconcilable claims of its opposed voices, as they enact the ancient but perennial conflict between family and state in a time of crisis, pitching the morality of private allegiance against that of public service. Above all, The Burial at Thebes honours the sovereign urgency and grandeur of Heaney's Sophoclean original, in which language speaks truth to power, then and now.

Six Temples at Thebes, Naqada and Ballas (Cambridge Library Collection - Egyptology)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 36.14 $A pioneering Egyptologist, Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853-1942) excavated over fifty sites and trained a generation of archaeologists. This single-volume reissue brings together two of his well-illustrated excavation reports. The first, originally published in 1897, describes work on six of the temples at Thebes, including the discovery of the famous Merneptah Stele, which contains the first non-biblical reference to Israel. A chapter on this inscription and others found in the temples is provided by the German scholar Wilhelm Spiegelberg (1870-1930). The second report, first published in 1896, discusses the archaeological work carried out at Naqada and Ballas by Petrie and James Edward Quibell (1867-1935), with a chapter by F. C. J. Spurrell (1842-1915) on the flint implements found at Naqada. Petrie wrote prolifically throughout his long career, and a great many of his other publications - for both specialists and non-specialists - are also reissued in this series.

Oedipus at Thebes : Sophocles' Tragic Hero and His Time
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 3.76 $In this widely praised book, an eminent classicist examines Sophocles' Oedipus Tyrannus in the context of fifth-century B.C. Athens. In attempting to discover what the play meant to Sophocles' contemporaries—and in particular in disentangling Sophocles' ideas from Freud's psychoanalytical interpretations—Bernard Knox casts fresh light on its timeless and universal nature. For this edition, Knox has provided a new preface and a list of suggested readings."What a joy it is to welcome this book back in print. As perennial as Sophocles' great play itself, Knox's work has never gone out of date, and never will."—Robert FaglesReviews of the earlier editions:"A superb analysis, demonstrating that when classical study is aware of Freud and the techniques of modern literary criticism, it can be as exciting nowadays as it must have been during the Renaissance."—New Yorker"A superb critical and textual investigation."—New York Times"One of the major contributions to Sophoclean and to Greek studies in recent years."—Virginia Quarterly Review"A magnificent contribution ... which is really required reading."—Cedric Whitman, American Journal of Philology"A brilliant piece of work combining the best of classical scholarship with the best of modern literary criticism."—John E. Rexine, Hellenic World

The Lost Tombs of Thebes: Ancient Egypt: Life in Paradise
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 45.62 $Illuminates the intriguing and mysterious landscape of Thebes and the lives of the nobles who lived there in Egypt's Golden Age. The foothills of the Theban massif, not far from Egypt’s Valley of the Kings, are filled with hundreds of impressive tombs from the New Kingdom belonging to the people who served the pharaohs. Just a handful are open to the public; many others are closed and can be visited only by scholars; still others have been hidden under villages built over the past centuries and have only recently been discovered. Written by world-renowned Egyptologist Zahi Hawass and illustrated with spectacular new photographs by Sandro Vannini, this new book gives an unprecedented access to these largely inaccessible tombs. It reveals some of the most exquisite examples of Egyptian art to be found anywhere in the land of the Nile, reflecting the aristocratic status of the tombs’ owners. At the heart of the book, three major chapters examine the glorious paintings and exquisitely sculpted reliefs that depict daily life on earth and life in paradise. Other chapters place the tomb owners in their historical context, explore the architecture and construction of the tombs, display the lavish burial equipment, and discuss the vital ongoing work of restoration and conservation. A reference section includes maps, plans, and a checklist of tombs. 300 color illustrations

Thebaid: A Song of Thebes (Masters of Latin Literature)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 45.94 $The Thebaid, a Latin epic in twelve books by Statius (c. 45–96 C. E.) reexamines events following the abdication of Oedipus, focusing on the civil war between the brothers Eteocles, King of Thebes, and Polynices, who comes at the head of an army from Argos to claim his share of royal power. The poem is long―each of the twelve books comprises over eight hundred lines―and complex, and it exploits a broad range of literary works, both Greek and Latin. Severely curtailed though he was by the emperor Domitian and his Reign of Terror, Statius nevertheless created a meditation on autocratic rule that is still of political interest today. Popular in its own time and much admired in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance―most notably by Dante and Chaucer―the poem fell into obscurity and has, for readers of English, been poorly served by translators.Statius composed his poem in dactylic hexameters, the supreme verse form in antiquity. In his hands, this venerable line is flexible, capable of subtle emphases and dramatic shifts in tempo; it is an expressive, responsive medium. In this new and long-awaited translation the poet Jane Wilson Joyce employs a loose, six-beat line in her English translation, which allows her to reveal something of the original rhythm and of the interplay between sentence structure and verse framework. The clarity of Joyce's translation highlights the poem's superb versification, sophisticated use of intertextuality, and bold formal experimentation and innovation. A substantial introduction and annotations make this epic accessible to students of all levels.

Seven Against Thebes (Septem Contra Thebas) (Clarendon Paperbacks)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 41.36 $Though the Septem has been the focus of much scholarly attention in recent decades, this powerful drama remains difficult for modern readers, presenting great problems of text and interpretation. The text of this major edition differs substantially from other current versions and the commentary draws on literature, art, and inscriptions to illuminate the work and its details by placing them in the context of Greek culture and society, and by showing how conventions are used, modified and distorted. Particular attention is given to style and language, to dramatic and literary structures and forms, and to the exploitation of religion and ritual.
