Before WWII there was a thriving Jewish community of some 50,000 people in Thessaloniki, Greece. In 1943, under Nazi occupation, virtually the entire community was deported to Auschwitz extermination camp. That the author, Erika Amariglio, and several members of her family survived is due only to a series of coincidences, including the fact that they were on the first transport ot Auschwitz and that they spoke fluent German. Erika Amariglio's story covers the period before the war in Thessaloniki, the German occupation and the gradual tightening of restrictions, the transportation, the two-and-a-half years spent in Auschwitz, the long death march back to Germany, the Amariglio family's escape to Yugoslavia, and their eventual reunion of the family in Greece. It concludes with the author's return to Auschwitz many years later as a delegate to an international conference on the Holocaust. This book has been previously published in Greek, German, French and Serbian.

The impetus for the workshop was the recent publication The Mosaics of Thessaloniki, 4th-14th century (Athens: Kapon editions, 2012), by C. Bakirtzis, E. Kourkoutidou-Nikolaidou and Ch. Mavropoulou-Tsiumi; which has provided an exemplary documentation of the mosaics of Thessaloniki, featuring images of exceptional quality (many hitherto unpublished). From the Foreword by A.P. Leventis: "Titled 'The Mosaics of Thessaloniki Revisited' this publication makes an intriguing contribution to the study of Byzantine material culture, not least because it underlines the importance of revisiting, rethinking and reconsidering our views on the Byzantine world. Even, in the study of monuments as well-known as those of Thessaloniki, the volume makes clear that much remains yet to be deciphered and fully understood and that there are many unanswered questions still. As the papers that follow underline, in studying Byzantium and in our attempted reading of a world so far removed from our own, there is still much to be discovered, which, in turn, will inform what we already know. Only by persevering and by keeping academic discourse and exchange vibrant, can we hope to come closer to an understanding of the material remains of this interesting and alluring world."

The text describes and evaluates all the most recent evidence for the Byzantine monuments of the city; together with the lavish illustrations, it offers an elegant account of the history of Byzantine civilization, enticing visitors along the major streets and narrow alleyways of the Upper town and introducing them, through the expertise of the specialist and the love of the admirer, to the enchantment of its unique monuments.

The succinct text provides an up-to-date introduction to the mosaics. It includes a timeline and a list of recent publications. Colour photos, many specially taken for this publication, document the spectacular qualities of these magnificent mosaics.

A gripping tale of survival in Nazi-occupied Greece... In April 1941 the Nazis invaded Thessaloniki, Greece. Within two years, the city’s Jews were shipped by cattle cars to the Auschwitz death camp. Approximately 56,000 Jews lived in Thessaloniki before the occupation and only 1,800 survivors eventually returned after the war ended. There were just three Jewish families that survived because of the courage and kindness of Greek citizens who risked their lives by hiding them in their homes. Among the survivors were Andrew “Andreas” Algava, who was three years old at the time, and his family. They were five of the 56,000 Jews who lived in Thessaloniki. Algava, who moved to the United States at the age of seven, has written a gripping account of his experience as a survivor titled 600 Days in Hiding. His family's memoir stands beside such classics of Holocaust literature as The Diary of Anne Frank, Elie Wiesel’s Night, Primo Levi’s Survival in Auschwitz, and Nechama Tec’s Defiance.

Public fountains located in historic neighbourhoods were among the most beautiful structures decorating Thessaloniki. Such fountains, from which the citizens collected water since ancient times, were found during excavations in the vicinity of ancient Agora. A fountain from the roman era still stands in front of Bey Hamami, or Paradisos Baths. Public fountains survived in the city through the Byzantine era. During the Ottoman occupation only the houses of the wealthy elite had running water, thus the rest of the citizens had to transport water from the public fountains. Despite the historical importance of these fountains for the city and its identity, over time they eventually drained out and year after year they were destroyed by human activities or contempt, collapsing under the lack of maintenance and conservation. This unfortunate history of such an important common resource for the operation of the city raises some questions; how many fountains, springs, baths and wells existed in Thessaloniki? How many of these have survived? How many only live in photographic documents to remind us the constant need of the city for fresh, cold water? Many of these structures were destroyed before they were ever photographed and so their history has been forever lost. However, several have been documented and thus survive in books, postcards and private document collections. This book presents those fountains which survive today either within the urban space of Thessaloniki or through pictures – 360 photographs in total. Specifically the book documents the history of 85 fountains, 18 cisterns (water reservoirs), 10 fiales (fountains in a church or mosque), a few baths, wells and agiasma (fountain with holly water. Stories from the history of Thessaloniki interconnected with some of these water resources are also presented in this book.
