This innovative study of urban liberalism in the most liberal major city in Imperial Germany goes well beyond anything currently available. The author draws on original archival sources to examine the nature of German liberalism from the annexation of Prussia to the outbreak of the First World War.

This work by Jeremias Held is the second German translation of the emblems of Andrea Alciato, who is rightfully known as pater et princes of the emblem. The first German translation was written by Wolfgang Hunger and published by Chrestien Wechel in a bi-lingual Latin-German edition in Paris in 1542. Hunger's German version was reprinted in facsimile in 1967 and 1980. Held's version of 1566-67, presented here, has never before been offered in its entirety in a modern reprint. It, too, is a bi-lingual edition with the Latin texts followed by Held's German version. However, the two prefaces are in German alone. Held's version contains 132 woodcuts in text to Alciato's 212 emblems. The facsimile reprint has been done from Glasgow University Library SM 45.

The court diary of Rabbi ?ayyim Gundersheim (d. 1795), a member of the rabbinic court of late eighteenth-century Frankfurt, sheds light on daily life in the Judengasse ("Jewish lane"), home to over 3,000 people, including Meyer Amschel Rothschild, founder of the famous banking family. Familial quarrels, squabbles between neighbors, legal proceedings over business deals gone sour, real estate transactions, and other disputes brought before the rabbinic court offer a window onto the world of daily life in the Frankfurt Jewish community in the waning years of the city's ghetto. Yet, Rabbi ?ayyim Gundersheim's diary is more than just a prism through which to view daily life. A Window on Their World provides a transcription of over 200 cases that were brought before the rabbinic court between 1773 and 1794-records that reveal the workings of the Jewish community and the place of Jewish tradition on the eve of the Enlightenment. Edward Fram not only provides readers with an English language summary of each case, but offers indices of the names of all individuals mentioned in the diary as well as a glossary of non-Hebrew terms. Pertinent documents from the Frankfurt pinqas, or community record book, have also been provided in order to give readers a more complete picture wherever possible. Fram's introduction to the diary includes a biographical background, an outline of Jewish legal autonomy in the early modern period, and a discussion of the importance of court documents as legal and historical sources.

Since his impressive debut at the 2009 Venice Biennale, Tomás Saraceno (b. San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina, 1973; lives and works in Frankfurt am Main) has been a fixture of the international art scene. In his works, which occupy their exhibition sites like organic structures, he envisions scenarios for possible architectures and the urban planning of the future. Networks resembling spider webs moor the balloon-like spheres, most of which float, in the exhibition space. They look like sprawling plexuses, illustrating a fascinating fusion of art, natural science, and engineering. Over the past several years, Tomás Saraceno has articulated his ideas in a wide range of manifestations. Starting in September 2011, two large exhibitions in Berlin and Düsseldorf will present his work.
