Educating English Daughters: Late Seventeenth-Century Debates (Volume 44) (The Other Voice in Early Modern Europe: The Toronto Series)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.03 $This edition offers texts from Bathsua Makin and Mary More, and Robert Whitehall’s response to More’s argument. Makin describes the appropriate education for London merchants’ daughters, arguing that girls should be educated and should aspire to follow learned women in history, and that educated women improve their families and themselves. More argues that women have the right to an education, and that such an education shows that the inequality of married women under English law is a man-made institution. More’s argument drew objections from her Oxford reader, Robert Whitehall, who preserved her manuscript with his own. Makin and More enjoyed a measure of public recognition and esteem, yet after their deaths, they and their texts were largely ignored until the late twentieth century.

The 44th Bomb Group in World War II: The Flying Eight-Balls Over Europe in the B-24
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 3.55 $The 44th Bomb Group, which flew the B-24 Liberator, was the “pioneer” unit for what evolved from the “Mighty Eighth’s” 2nd Bomb Wing into a full-scale Bomb (and later Air) Division. The Group amassed an impressive 343 missions and won two Distinguished Unit Citations between November 1942 and April 1945, dropping nearly 19,000 tons of ordnance in the process including the legendary August 1943 Ploesti mission. These statistics were achieved at a material cost of around 200 aircraft, and a human cost of some 2,000 airmen MIA, as the 8th USAAF focused its strategic bombing campaign in the face of determined Luftwaffe opposition.

The emancipation of Soviet law. (= Law in Eastern Europe, Band 44).
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 36.33 $The political, economic, and social reforms resulting from Gorbachev's perestroika have become more radical and comprehensive throughout the years. Increasingly, in their implementation, a central role has been accorded to law. The construction of a viable democratic system, the establishment of an economy in which market factors are decisive, the readmittance of a pluralistic civil society, all of them presuppose, in the eyes of the present Soviet leadership, the creation of a reliable legal foundation. Legislative activity in the Soviet Union during the past few years has therefore been hectic. At the same time, while law was being used as an instrument of change, the character of Soviet law itself was deeply affected. From being the obedient servant of a totalitarian master, law is becoming the core element of a new order in which its supremacy is accepted as the starting point for redesigning all the major sectors of social life. In this volume a number of leader Western experts consider the practical effect of this emancipatory process on the most important branches of Soviet law and investigate its philosophical dimensions.

Augustus: Godfather of Europe
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 32.79 $Following his successful biography of Nero, Richard Holland now turns his attention to Rome's first emperor, Augustus, about whom so little is known despite a reign of 44 years. The focus throughout this well-written study is on the figure of Augustus himself rather than on the cultural and social achievements of the Augustan Age that tend to overshadow his character. Much of the book focuses on the death of the Republic and the extraordinary circumstances that saw this `young pretender', an insignificant-looking teenager, seize control from men such as Mark Antony in the aftermath of Caesar's murder. Augustus' manipulation of the ordinary as well as powerful people of Rome, his control of the army and his determined pursuit of Brutus and Mark Antony are vividly discussed here. Wherever possible, Holland searches these events, as well as Octavian's relations with such figures as Cicero, Mark Antony, Cleopatra and Virgil, for clues to the nature of the man Augustus. Many of the charges laid at Augustus' door, and later distorted by Shakespeare, are found to be tittle-tattle but he is till shown as a figure of conflict, combining generosity, prudence and a deep love for his wife of fifty years with `ruthless bloodletting' and the severe punishment of his only child. Above all, however, this book demonstrates the sheer power of Augustus' personality and legacy as emperor, as head of a great dynasty and as a `founding father of western civilisation'. This is a very enjoyable read with notes confined to the back.

The Roman World 44 BC-AD 180: Second Edition (The Routledge History of the Ancient World)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 3.21 $The Roman World 44 BC – AD 180 deals with the transformation of the Mediterranean regions, northern Europe and the Near East by the military autocrats who ruled Rome during this period. The book traces the impact of imperial politics on life in the city of Rome itself and in the rest of the empire, arguing that, despite long periods of apparent peace, this was a society controlled as much by fear of state violence as by consent. Martin Goodman examines the reliance of Roman emperors on a huge military establishment and the threat of force. He analyses the extent to which the empire functioned as a single political, economic and cultural unit and discusses, region by region, how much the various indigenous cultures and societies were affected by Roman rule. The book has a long section devoted to the momentous religious changes in this period, which witnessed the popularity and spread of a series of elective cults and the emergence of rabbinic Judaism and Christianity from the complex world of first-century Judaea. This book provides a critical assessment of the significance of Roman rule for inhabitants of the empire, and introduces readers to many of the main issues currently faced by historians of the early empire. This new edition, incorporating the finds of recent scholarship, includes a fuller narrative history, expanded sections on the history of women and slaves and on cultural life in the city of Rome, many new illustrations, an updated section of bibliographical notes, and other improvements designed to make the volume as useful as possible to students as well as the general reader.
