the Thracian Wars (hercules Tp)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 34.14 $Nearly 3,200 years ago, a tormented soul walked the Earth as neither man nor god: Hercules, powerful son of the god-king Zeus, and for this he received nothing but suffering. After 12 arduous labors and the loss of his family, this dark, world-weary soul turned his back on the gods, finding solace only in bloody battle. Over the years, he warmed to the company of six similar souls, bonded by their love of fighting and the presence of death ― never questioning where they go or who they fight, just how much they will be paid. Now the King of Thrace has hired these mercenaries to turn his men into the greatest army of all time, which means training them to be as bloodthirsty and ruthless as their own reputation. It is time for this band of lost souls to finally have their eyes opened to how far they have fallen ― and the narrow, perilous path to their own redemption.

The Gods of Battle: The Thracians at War, 1500 BC - 150 AD
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 48.95 $Herodotus described the Thracians (who inhabited what is now roughly modern Bulgaria, Romania, the European part of Turkey and northern Greece) as the most numerous nation of all - apart from the Indians - and said that they would be the most powerful of all nations if they didn’t enjoy fighting each other so much. There may have been a million Thracians, divided among as many as 40 tribes.Ancient writers were hard put to decide which of the Thracian tribes was the most valiant; they were employed as mercenaries by all the great Mediterranean civilizations. Thrace had the potential to field huge numbers of troops, and the Greeks and Romans lived in fear of a dark Thracian cloud descending from the north, devastating civilization in the Balkans. The Thracian way of warfare had a huge influence on Classical Greek and Hellenistic warfare. After Thrace was conquered by the Romans, the Thracians provided a ready source of tough auxiliaries to the Roman army. Chris Webber gives an overview of Thracian history and culture, but focuses predominantly on their warfare and weapons. The latest archaeological finds are used to give the most detailed and accurate picture yet of their arms, armor and costume. He identifies and differentiates the many different tribes, showing that their weapons and tactics varied. The resulting study should be welcomed by anyone interested in the archaeology and history of the region or in classical warfare as a whole.

Ancient Gold: The Wealth of the Thracians : Treasures from the Republic of Bulgaria
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.00 $Published to accompany an exhibition at six US museums, starting at the Saint Louis Museum in February 1998, this is a study of the remarkable artistic accomplishments of the Thracians, a people who lived to the north of Greece in ancient times. In the "Iliad", Homer described the Thracians as formidable enemies of the Greeks in the Trojan War, and their mountainous country gave birth to legendary poets such as Orpheus. But the Thracians had no written language, and until recently little was known about this enigmatic people. During the last three decades, however, newly discovered archaeological sites have been excavated and studied to reveal the Thracians as a people of extraordinary sophistication. Their metalwork, in particular, which included gold and silver jewellery, bridle ornaments, vases and vessels, was of great beauty and of the highest quality. The book's authors, all specialists in various aspects of Thracian studies, provide commentaries on the objects illustrated. Using a wealth of evidence from ancient Greek and Roman accounts, as well as linguistic, archaeological and ethnographic sources, they present a picture of life in ancient Thrace.

Sofia: Architectural Guide
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 48.57 $Sofia is one of the oldest cities in Europe, though it still remains relatively undiscovered as a destination. Its urban fabric comprises an immense range of architectural cultures, with structures by the ancient Thracians, the Romans, the Byzantines, as well as works from the Bulgarian medieval era, the Ottoman Empire, and modern Bulgarian times, including the peculiar period of communist historicism and modernism. This book presents the city and its capacity to produce a unique architectural experience by tracing its specific geography and dissecting its historical layers. Sofia is not defined by any pure styles; it re-mixes various influences into an amalgamation, typical of peripheral cultures, creating an authenticity and uniqueness. Architectural Guide Sofia catalogs not only historical monuments and conspicuous sites, overlooked by standard tourist guides, but also the most recent buildings in the city, outlining the experimental works by the contemporary generation of architects. It profiles over 200 selected buildings from different historical periods and includes several articles exploring the genesis of the local architectures as well as an essay on specific architectural details born out of clashes of various stylistic influences. Over 15 maps and 700 illustrations in colour, coupled with an extensive bibliography, will help the reader and traveler experience Sofia as part of a true architectural adventure.

Bulgarian Folk Costumes from Thrace
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 132.97 $Thracians lived in the Balkans over the course of 2,500 years, during which they created their material culture and defined a spiritual image. They emerged in prehistoric times, went through the tribal system and slavery, and disappeared in early feudalism. Thracian existence went through several stages: Thracian, Thracian-Hellenic, Thracian-Macedonian, Thracian-Roman and Thracian-Byzantine, all of them leaving a deep mark in European culture. This book describes the history of Thracian culture and its impact on Bulgarian costumes over the centuries. Documented throughout are vivid, full-page photographs of costumes submitted by five historical/ethnographic museums: Smolian, Haskovo, Plovdiv, Kazanluk, and Kardjaly. Many of these costumes are worn by human models. The colors and weaves of these textiles emerge with wonderful clarity under the artful photography of Velislav Nikolav. Fully researched and produced in Bulgaria, this book is an excellent resource for any person interested in authentic Bulgarian folk costumes. The book measures 11" x 7-3/8" and is printed on high gloss paper in Czech Republic.

Plutarch (Classical life and letters)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 324.94 $Excerpt: ... most of them Gauls and Thracians, who, not for any fault by them committed, but simply through the cruelty of their master, were kept in confinement for this object of fighting one with another. Two hundred of these formed a plan to escape, but their plot being discovered, those of them who became aware of it in time to anticipate their master, being seventy-eight, got out of a cook's shop chopping-knives and spits, and made their way through the city, and lighting by the way on several wagons that were carrying gladiator's arms to another city, they seized upon them and armed themselves. And seizing upon a defensible place, they chose three captains, of whom Spartacus was chief, a Thracian of one of the nomad tribes, and a man not only of high spirit and valiant, but in understanding, also, and in gentleness, superior to his condition, and more of a Grecian than the people of his country usually are. When he first came to be sold at Rome, they say a snake coiled itself upon his face as he lay asleep, and his wife, who at this latter time also accompanied him in his flight, his country-woman, a kind of prophetess, and one of those possessed with the bacchanal frenzy, declared that it was a sign portending great and formidable power to him with no happy event. First, then, routing those that came out of Capua against them, and thus procuring a quantity of proper soldiers' arms, they gladly threw away their own as barbarous and dishonorable. Afterwards Clodius, the praetor, took the command against them with a body of three thousand men from Rome, and besieged them within a mountain, accessible only by one narrow and difficult passage, which Clodius kept guarded, encompassed on all other sides with steep and slippery precipices. Upon the top, however, grew a great many wild vines, and cutting down as many of their boughs as they had need of, they twisted them into strong ladders long enough to reach from thence to the bottom, by which, without any...

Spartacus and the Slave War 73–71 BC: A gladiator rebels against Rome (Campaign, 206)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 49.83 $This Osprey Campaign title brings to life the story of Rome's most famous revolt, the Slave War (73-71 BC), and the ex-gladiator who led it. In the year 73 BC, the Thracian Spartacus broke out of the gladiatorial training school at Capua in Campainia. A charismatic leader, Spartacus formed an army of runaway slaves and people with little to lose, and defeated the Roman troops under the praetor C. Claudius Glaber. With this minor victory, Spartacus' army swelled to 70,000 and rampaged throughout Campania assaulting a number of cities and defeating two consular armies. Terrified lest the revolt spread across the republic, the government assigned M. Licinius Crassus the task of crushing the revolt. Crassus' first attempt to capture Spartacus failed, and the Roman senate called upon Pompey to help him. Together, they cornered Spartacus and brought him to battle near the source of the river Silarus. During the battle, Spartacus was killed and his army defeated. Crassus crucified 6,000 prisoners as an example to others who might think of revolt.
