Drawing on ethnographic and archival fieldwork, she engages with developers, policy makers, scientists, farmers, and rural migrants to show how Bangladeshi and global elites ignore the history of landscape transformation and its attendant political conflicts. Paprocki looks at how groups craft economic narratives and strategies that redistribute power and resources away from peasant communities. Although these groups claim that increased production of export commodities will reframe the threat of climate change into an opportunity for economic development and growth, the reality is not so simple. For the country's rural poor, these promises ring hollow. As development dispossesses the poor from agrarian livelihoods, outmigration from peasant communities leads to precarious existences in urban centers. And a vision of development in which urbanization and export-led growth are both desirable and inevitable is not one the land and its people can sustain. Tlingit is famous for having one of the most difficult and complex sound systems in the world. Tlingit presents about two dozen sounds not shared with English. Four of these sounds are unique to Tlingit – not shared with any other language on Earth (as far as linguists know). This complexity can prove discouraging for beginners and presents a major barrier to learning. The idea behind the book is to introduce students to the sounds of the language in as non-threatening a manner as possible. The book also will help fluent speakers learn to write Tlingit. The language historically was not written and the orthography used today was developed by linguists in the late 20th century. Consequently, many Elders fluent in Tlingit do not know the writing system. By listening to the online audio and following along with the text, fluent speakers will be able to learn which symbols correspond to which sounds. The book was written by Richard and Nora Marks Dauenhauer, and the companion audio tracks, produced by Keri Edwards and Albert McDonnell, were recorded by fluent speakers John Marks and June Pegues. Some such texts have previously been available to the general reader, spread through a variety of works on the period (including State of the Country series, local newspapers, Parliamentary Papers and old manuscript sources). Dating from the 1801-45 period, including an extensive introduction which sets out in some detail the concepts involved, the book is a treasure trove of historical material, particularly for those interested in how people reacted to the collapse of grain prices in 1821, the 1822 'Rockite disturbances' and the Great Famine which began in 1845. The material has been taken in the main from the huge bulk of correspondence and reports which found its way to Dublin Castle from all over the Irish countryside, but is also supplemented by newspaper reports and the evidence produced before various parliamentary enquiries.
