Glencoe and Beyond: The Sheep-Farming Years, 1780-1830 [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 75.42 $Softcover, minor shelfwear and slightly faded covers, previous owner's label on front endpaper, otherwise in Very Good condition. First edition, pp316, map of the area, genealogy of the Macdonalds and Camerons of Fassifern, with index. This perceptive and informative study examines all these aspects and shows ultimately that chiefs, tacksmen, clansmen, and even southern sheep-farmers were all individuals reacting to the circumstances in which they found themselves, and that these circumstances themselves were characterized by a great deal of economic turbulence. It has been widely accepted in the past that sheep-farming in the Highlands was developed and undertaken by southern incomers; some modern historians have even dismissed the possibility that Highlanders could have become sheep-farmers because they lacked the necessary skill and capital. Ian S. MacDonald's meticulous research disproves this and illustrates that in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries that while some southern sheep-farmers did indeed move into the Highlands, they were in fact greatly outnumbered by native Highlanders, who saw a future in sheep-farming, initiated it themselves, and pursued it vigorously, as is shown when the Minister of the Parish of Kilmanivaig wrote about sheep-farming in 1842: It is supposed that there are upwards of 100,000 sheep reared in this parish every year. Mr Cameron, Carychvilly [Corriechoille], the most extensive grazier in the north, stated a few years ago, that in the preceding year he had clipped upwards of 37,000 sheep. .Mr Greig of Tullach [Tolloch], and the Messrs M'Donnell of Kappoch, are supposed to have each near 100 square miles under sheep: the one on the north and the other on the south banks of the Spean.

Herdwicks: Herdwick Sheep and the English Lake District [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 5.94 $Herdwicks are the native sheep of the English Lake District. They are an outstanding part of the cultural landscape of the area with about one hundred farms still keeping Herdwick sheep on the fells. This book traces the development of the breed and reveals the fell farming year through numerous historical and current examples. It describes the arrangements for managing sheep on the fells, (many of which are common land) and the famous heafing behaviour of Herdwick sheep is examined in detail as are the roles of sheep dogs, sheepfolds, sheep identification marks, Shepherd's Guides and shepherds' meets. The work of the many Herdwick families is documented as is the role of Mrs Heelis (as Beatrix Potter was known locally) putting both her contribution to Herdwick sheep breeding and also her legacy to the Lake District into perspective. From the 1920s and 1930s afforestation of the fells led to a campaign for a National Park in the Lake District and the acquisition of key Herdwick farms by preservationist bodies. The National Trust now owns over a quarter of the National Park and many of the traditional Herdwick farms. This book also looks at more recent challenges to Herdwick farming such as the Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak in Cumbria in 2001; reductions to stocking levels as a result of environmental schemes; and the reform of hill farming policy. It concludes by suggesting some ways forward to sustain a key part of the Lake District's cultural landscape.

The Power of I Am.So I Can: How to Use Your Life Experiences to Drive Your Life's Legacy
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.55 $LEARN FROM THE POWERFUL EXPERIENCES OF A DRIVEN AUSSIE MAVERICK BUILDING A LEGACY. "The Power of I Am . . . So I Can" explores an almost unbelievable memoir of life experiences from sheep farming at age four to Iain's coaching career more than six decades later. Moving from the Australian Outback to being a CEO in the U.S. required discovering the life lessons from each of his incredible experiences and applying them to the creation of tools and guidelines for results and legacy-building. Working with a dog to herd sheep was about the power of delegation. Training at the East-West Center in Hawaii taught the power of cultural, rather than linguistic, communication. Hitchhiking across Asia and India opened Iain's mind to powerful commercial choices to improve world economies and - his most powerful tool - a PRESENT-FUTURE Mindset helped to forecast wins from Heinz to Harley-Davidson Dealers and countless others between. Iain's rich narrative is an interactive text, with QR codes leading to audio, video, articles, resources, and more. It may read like fiction, yet it will leave you with the resources you need to build a real-life legacy of professional and personal prosperity.

All Flesh Is Grass Format: Hardcover
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 45.91 $Amidst Mad Cow scares and consumer concerns about how farm animals are bred, fed, and raised, many farmers and homesteaders are rediscovering the traditional practice of pastoral farming. Grasses, clovers, and forbs are the natural diet of cattle, horses, and sheep, and are vital supplements for hogs, chickens, and turkeys. Consumers increasingly seek the health benefits of meat from animals raised in green paddocks instead of in muddy feedlots. In All Flesh Is Grass: The Pleasures and Promises of Pasture Farming, Gene Logsdon explains that well-managed pastures are nutritious and palatable—virtual salads for livestock. Leafy pastures also hold the soil, foster biodiversity, and create lovely landscapes. Grass farming might be the solution for a stressed agricultural system based on an industrial model and propped up by federal subsidies. In his clear and conversational style, Logsdon explains historically effective practices and new techniques. His warm, informative profiles of successful grass farmers offer inspiration and ideas. His narrative is enriched by his own experience as a “contrary farmer” on his artisan-scale farm near Upper Sandusky, Ohio. All Flesh Is Grass will have broad appeal to the sustainable commercial farmer, the home-food producer, and all consumers who care about their food.

The Shepherd's Calendar : The Collected Works of James Hogg
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 62.85 $James Hogg is one of the acknowledged masters of the short story. Some of his best stories appeared in The Shepherd's Calendar, a work of the 1820s in which he sets out to re-create on paper the manner and the content of the traditional oral storytelling of Ettrick Forest, the remote and mountainous sheep-farming district in which he grew up. Like Hogg's masterpiece The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner, several of the stories from The Shepherd's Calendar deal disturbingly and hauntingly with the supernatural, and explore psychological depths with a remarkable insight and intensity. The Shepherd's Calendar also draws on Hogg's experiences as a young shepherd in the 1790s as it produces a convincing and very human picture of the dangers, the pleasures, and the tensions of the lives of the rural poor in Scotland in the years that followed the French Revolution. This Polygon paperback is based on the acclaimed hardback edition of The Shepherd's Calendar for the Stirling / South Carolina Collected Works of James Hogg (Edinburgh University Press, 1995).
