Dynamics of Water and Solute Transport in Trees: Xylem and Phloem Translocation in Trees
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 50.94 $Xylem and phloem transport processes in trees are classical problems in plant physiology, but still somewhat weakly understood. The transport of water from the soil to the leaves is especially intriguing since it occurs under metastable conditions where water pressure has decreased below saturation vapour pressure. This often leads to the formation of gas bubbles (embolisms) and disruption of xylem transport. Embolisms have also been shown to refill with water, but mechanisms for refilling remain uncertain. In this book these plant physiological problems are addressed as purely physical processes. Also the osmotically driven translocation of sugars in the phloem is analysed with a whole tree level model. It is predicted that phloem transport is tightly coupled to xylem water potential and hindered by a rise in phloem viscosity when phloem sap becomes highly concentrated.

Protein Quality Control in Neurodegenerative Diseases
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 179.47 $The health of the proteome depends upon protein quality control to regulate the proper synthesis, folding, translocation, and clearance of proteins. The cell is challenged constantly by environmental and physiological stress, aging, and the chronic expressions of disease associated misfolded proteins. Substantial evidence supports the hypothesis that the expression of damaged proteins initiates a cascade of molecular events that leads to Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington's disease, and other diseases of protein conformation.

Osvaldo Romberg +/- 70, Even
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 23.84 $Osvaldo Romberg is an Argentine artist living in the United States who has, over the past five decades, produced a consistently goading body of work that tackles questions of analysis, interpretation, and representation of art and art history. His own history of translocation-between Argentina, Israel, Europe, and the United States-and his firm commitment to family and teaching are mirrored by an art practice that persistently plays with questions of life, sex, death, and the complexities of language and mythology.Osvaldo Romberg +/-70, Even assembles classic texts by Marcelin Pleynet, Jean- Michel Rabat

Ahuahu (Paperback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 55.96 $Paperback. Aotearoa New Zealand is renowned among biologists worldwide for spectacular ecological restoration work over the last 50 years, through advances in pest eradication and native species translocation. This book documents the development of these world-leading technologies. It uses examples from throughout the country, but has a special focus on one island group - the Mercury Islands off Coromandel, of which Ahuahu (Great Mercury Island) is the largest. The story is told through the eyes of pioneer conservation biologist David Towns, who was there from the start. It is a story of triumphs and setbacks, of opportunity and innovation, of teamwork and emerging bicultural collaboration. Today, all seven islands of the Mercury group are free of mammalian pests, providing a haven to native plants and animals. This book is the story of how that was made possible. New Zealand is renowned worldwide for spectacular ecological restoration work over the last 50 years, through advances in pest eradication and native species translocation.
