Assault on Normandy [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 44.00 $Until now the telling of the story of D-Day and the retaking of France from the Nazis began at the beach and moved inland. With this book the experiences of the men on the water come to the forefront and deepen our understanding of the long and bitter struggle. This 50th anniversary commemorative volume documents the crucial part played by the sea services in the invasion through a series of eyewitness narratives remarkable for their variety and candor. No longer a mere footnote to history, the indispensable role of the sea services can finally be fully appreciated. To provide a vivid, memorable account of the June 1944 Allied assault on Normandy, Paul Stillwell has selected four dozen firsthand recollections of the participants, illustrated with some 250 photographs, many from private collections. Taken from interviews he and other oral historians have conducted, the recollections range from those of admirals in command to frontline soldiers and capture the human side of the story from all perspectives. The drama, sense of sacrifice, and impact on individuals are realized through the reminiscences of naval reservist Douglas Fairbanks Jr., former Brooklyn Dodger Rex Barney, and Medal of Honor recipient Vice Adm. John D. Bulkeley, USN (Ret.), who commanded the minesweepers that cleared the sea-lanes to the Normandy beaches, and a host of other participants.Assault on Normandy also recounts the fatal flight of Joseph Kennedy, conditions on board troop transports and landing craft, the capture of hundreds of German prisoners, PT-boat operations, the naval shore bombardment of Normandy and Cherbourg, a surface gun battle at point-blank range, and the use of codebreaking in the air war. Stillwell's informative introduction and transitions put the individual contributions in their historical context.

Victory In The West Volume I: The Battle Of Normandy: History Of The Second World War: United Kingdom Military Series: Official Campaign History
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 36.73 $The first of two books in the 18-volume official British History of the Second World War dealing with D-Day and its consequences: the liberation of German-occupied western Europe in 1944-45. This volume begins by describing the origins and development of Operation ‘Overlord’ - the ambitious Anglo-American plan to invade Normandy. With subsidiary sections on such subjects as the French Resistance, attempts to assassinate Hitler, and new technology, - including the artificial ‘Mulberry’ harbours, - the authors describe D-Day itself with its airborne assaults, naval bombardment and seaborne landings on Gold, Juno, Sword, Utah and Omaha beaches. They narrate the hard fighting as the Allies secure their bridgehead and push inland, capturing Cherbourg and Caen, and enveloping the main German defending armies at the battle of the Falaise Gap. The book culminates with the liberation of Paris at the end of August, and ends with Eisenhower and Montgomery poised to cross the Rhine. Supported by ten appendices on the forces engaged, the book is lavishly illustrated with 5 general maps, 20 situation maps, 26 sketch maps and diagrams, and 63 photographs.

United States Army Logistics: The Normandy Campaign, 1944.
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 162.00 $The U.S. Army supply organization for the Normandy Invasion, although very impressive, should have done a better job in the summer of 1944. The supply system suffered from several serious shortcomings which should have been avoided. The purpose of this work is to examine an aspect of military history which, as many military historians have pointed out, has received little attention. As the Gulf War demonstrated, logistics, the supplying of armies, is crucial to achieving victory.

The United States of Theocracy: The Christian Taliban Assault on Our Freedom
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.21 $Hollywood Book Festival Honorable Mention 2014Florida Book Festival Honorable Mention 2015"This is a chilling book.""A fast-paced read that is part autobiography, part political analysis, and part non-fiction investigation of a system that appears almost insane.""Humphreys is doing a public service with her analysis of an alarming and growing fundamentalism."Hollywood Book FestivalIn her expose of the dark side of fundamentalist Christianity, psychologist Janet Humphreys reveals a punitive and intolerant religious movement wherein women are expected to be subservient to men, are discouraged from exercising their right to equal work for equal pay, and in which divorced women and gays are considered second class citizens undeserving of government services and benefits. Her expose is centered on areas of rural Florida which are fast becoming a brand of theocracy in which people who do not conform to the rigid religious dogma are being punished for their lack of compliance without legal recourse. In this eye-opening account of religion running amok, Dr. Humphreys talks about how she became the target of Christian fundamentalists while working as a prison psychologist in North Florida. Harassed on the job, conspired against and ignored by law enforcement, she was finally left with no choice but to resign and relocate, incurring financial losses and losing her retirement benefits as a result. United States of Theocracy is one woman’s story, but it could be the story of anyone living in a community where the line between the law and religious doctrine has been muddied to the point where there is little, if any, separation between church and state. It serves as a warning that when extreme religious dogma encroaches upon people’s rights and freedoms we are in danger of losing the essence of what America stands for.

Normandy 44 (Paperback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.93 $Paperback. From established historian James Holland, this is the top ten bestselling and second biggest history book of 2019.'A devastating new account.Holland knows his stuff when it comes to military matters' Daily Mail, Book of the Week'A superb account of the invasion that deserves immense praise. To convey the human drama of Normandy requires great knowledge and sensitivity. Holland has both in spades' The Times________________Renowned World War Two historian James Holland presents an entirely new perspective on one of the most important moments in recent history, unflinchingly examining the brutality and violence that characterised the campaign.D-Day and the 76 days of bitter fighting in Normandy that followed have come to be seen as a defining episode in the Second World War. Its story has been endlessly retold, and yet it remains a narrative burdened by both myth and assumed knowledge. In this reexamined history, James Holland presents a broader overview, one that challenges much of what we think we know about D-Day and the Normandy campaign. The sheer size and scale of the Allies' war machine ultimately dominates the strategic, operational and tactical limitations of the German forces.Drawing on unseen archives and testimonies from around the world and introducing a cast of eye-witnesses including foot soldiers, tank men, fighter pilots and more, James Holland's epic telling profoundly recalibrates our understanding of its true place in the tide of human history. The new, sweeping World War II book from James Holland, THE SAVAGE STORM, is available now. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Normandy '44: D-Day and the Epic 77-Day Battle for France
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 68.03 $D-Day, June 6, 1944, and the seventy-six days of bitter fighting in Normandy that followed the Allied landing, have become the defining episode of World War II in the west―the object of books, films, television series, and documentaries. Yet as familiar as it is, as James Holland makes clear in his definitive history, many parts of the OVERLORD campaign, as it was known, are still shrouded in myth and assumed knowledge. Drawing freshly on widespread archives and on the testimonies of eye-witnesses, Holland relates the extraordinary planning that made Allied victory in France possible; indeed, the story of how hundreds of thousands of men, and mountains of materiel, were transported across the English Channel, is as dramatic a human achievement as any battlefield exploit. The brutal landings on the five beaches and subsequent battles across the plains and through the lanes and hedgerows of Normandy―a campaign that, in terms of daily casualties, was worse than any in World War I―come vividly to life in conferences where the strategic decisions of Eisenhower, Rommel, Montgomery, and other commanders were made, and through the memories of paratrooper Lieutenant Dick Winters of Easy Company, British corporal and tanker Reg Spittles, Thunderbolt pilot Archie Maltbie, German ordnance officer Hans Heinze, French resistance leader Robert Leblanc, and many others. For both sides, the challenges were enormous. The Allies confronted a disciplined German army stretched to its limit, which nonetheless caused tactics to be adjusted on the fly. Ultimately ingenuity, determination, and immense materiel strength―delivered with operational brilliance―made the difference. A stirring narrative by a pre-eminent historian, Normandy ‘44 offers important new perspective on one of history’s most dramatic military engagements and is an invaluable addition to the literature of war.

Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 39.59 $The ordinary fighting man often paid the price for his generals' mistakes. From the beaches of Normandy to the cruel setbacks at Arnhem and the Battle of the Bulge, '44: In Combat from Normandy to the Ardennes is the story of early confidence turning to disillusion as the campaign wore on—appalling strategic blunders, of strained relations among the Allies, of ideals steadily overtaken by the grim realities of war.
