Building the Kingdom in Samoa: 1888-2005 is a unique combination of history, imagery and faith-filled personal accounts relating to the introduction and growth of the Church in Samoa, culminating in the rebuilding of the temple in 2005. It is the kind of book that can be discovered over and over again on many different levels. The book is the unofficial history of The Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints in the Samoan Islands including Savai'i, Upolu, Tutuila, and Manu'a from 1862 to 2005 This publication is an updated and expanded version of the book, Samoa Apia Mission History, 1888-1983 which commemorated missionary work and Church growth prior to the dedication of the first temple in 1983. Included along with the somewhat impersonal elements of the Church's history in Samoa are over 200 personal narratives, which reveal a wide range of thoughts, feelings, and experiences of some of the 6,000 plus individuals who have served missions and some of the nearly 900 individuals who have taught in Church schools in Samoa. Names of over 7,000 missionaries of the Church school educators are included in the appendices along with individuals and couples who presided over the mission since 1888. Reading Visual Narratives uses the principles of systemic-functional theory to organise an explicit account of visual meaning in relation to three perspectives: the visual construction of the narrative events and characters (ideational meaning), the visual positioning of the reader through choices related to focalisation and appraisal (interpersonal meaning) and the discourse organization of visual meanings through choices in framing and composition (textual meaning). The descriptions throughout are illustrated with examples from highly regarded children's picture books. Reading Visual Narratives extends previous social-semiotic accounts of the 'grammar' of the image, by focussing attention on discourse level meanings and on semantic relationships created by sequences of images. Brenton D. Faber’s spirited account of an academic consultant’s journey through banks, ghost towns, cemeteries, schools, and political campaigns explores the tenuous relationships between cultural narratives and organizational change. Blending Faber’s firsthand experiences in the study and implementation of change with theoretical discussions of identity, agency, structure, and resistance within contexts of change, this innovative bookis among the first such communications studies to profile a scholar who is also a full participant in the projects.
