Vilnius Poker
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 34.74 $A dark, enigmatic, and visceral examination of the psychology of repression, Vilnius Poker dives into the minds of four narrators whose contradictory memories challenge the very idea of truth. In this masterpiece written "for the drawer," Vilnius itself becomes a presence possessing a will, a consciousness and, worse, an intent. Vilnius - City of Strangers
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 54.74 $Napoleon, Dostoyevsky, Stendhal, Tolstoy, Doblin, Forster, Bakhtin, and Brodsky: these voices - among others equally compelling though lesser known - reveal the essence of Europe in their narratives of encounter with the threshold city of Vilnius. Laimonas Briedis has woven the letters, diaries, utterances and reflections of strangers about this gateway city at the heart of Europe into a compelling and intimate story. The author shares with the reader a deep understanding of the Lithuanian, Polish, Russian and German identities of the place, as well as its centrality in European Jewish culture. Lavishly illustrated and carefully researched, this book is a veritable hall of mirrors, which yields an illuminating vision of Vilnius and an exceptional window on Europe. Laimonas Briedis is a native of Vilnius. He received a doctoral degree in human geography at the University of British Columbia and conducted his postdoctoral research at the History Department of the University of Toronto. The Three Tragic Heroes of the Vilnius Ghetto: Witenberg, Sheinbaum, Gens
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 74.48 $Vilnius (Vilna, Wilno), the capital of Lithuania, is almost 700 years old. Since the Middle Ages it has been one of the main centers of Jewish cultural, religious, social, and political activity of the Diaspora. At one time, one half of the city inhabitants were Jewish. Everything changed during the Holocaust. The Jewish community was destroyed by the Nazis and their collaborators. But there were those who refused to surrender without a fight. Witenberg and Sheinbaum were the leaders of the Jewish underground resistance organizations in the Vilnius ghetto. Gens was the Jewish head of the ghetto, appointed to this position by the German authorities. All three perished during the destruction of the Jewish ghetto. These three figures are the Three Tragic Heroes of the Vilnius Ghetto. This book compares the different approaches to the issues of resistance and survival and illuminates the specific problems of Jewish resistance and also the larger dilemma of survival during the Nazi era.

Ponary Diary, 1941-1943
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 51.66 $A chilling wartime diary of the destruction of the Lithuanian/Polish Jews, recorded by a non-Jew About sixty thousand Jews from Wilno (Vilnius, Jewish Vilna) and surrounding townships in present-day Lithuania were murdered by the Nazis and their Lithuanian collaborators in huge pits on the outskirts of Ponary. Over a period of several years, Kazimierz Sakowicz, a Polish journalist who lived in the village of Ponary, was an eyewitness to the murder of these Jews as well as to the murders of thousands of non-Jews on an almost daily basis. He chronicled these events in a diary that he kept at great personal risk.Written as a simple account of what Sakowicz witnessed, the diary is devoid of personal involvement or identification with the victims. It is thus a unique document: testimony from a bystander, an “objective” observer without an emotional or a political agenda, to the extermination of the Jews of the city known as “the Jerusalem of Lithuania.”Sakowicz did not survive the war, but much of his diary did. Painstakingly pieced together by Rahel Margolis from scraps of paper hidden in various locations, the diary was published in Polish in 1999. It is here published in English for the first time, extensively annotated by Yitzhak Arad to guide readers through the events at Ponary.
