Math Exchanges: Guiding Young Mathematicians in Small Group Meetings
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 49.38 $Traditionally, small-group math instruction has been used as a format for reaching children who struggle to understand. Math coach Kassia Omohundro Wedekind uses small-group instruction as the centerpiece of her math workshop approach, engaging all students in rigorous "math exchanges." The key characteristics of these mathematical conversations are that they are: 1) short, focused sessions that bring all mathematical minds together, 2) responsive to the needs of the specific group of mathematicians, and 3) designed for meaningful, guided reflection. As in reading and writing workshop, students in Kassia's math workshop are becoming self-directed and independent while participating in a classroom community of learners. Through the math exchanges, students focus on number sense and the big ideas of mathematics. Teachers guide the conversations with small groups of students, mediating talk and thinking as students share problem-solving strategies, discuss how math works, and move toward more effective and efficient approaches and greater mathematical understanding.Although grounded in theory and research, Math Exchanges is written for practicing teachers and answers such questions as the following: How can I use a math workshop approach and follow a certain textbook or set of standards? How should I form small groups? and How often should I meet with small groups? What should I focus on in small groups? How can I tell if my groups are making progress? What do small-group math exchanges look like, sound like, and feel like?

Artistic and Cultural Exchanges between Europe and Asia, 1400-1900: Rethinking Markets, Workshops and Collections [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 100.00 $The European expansion to Asia was driven by the desire for spices and Asian luxury products. Its results, however, exceeded the mere exchange of commodities and precious metals. The meeting of Asia and Europe signaled not only the beginnings of a global market but also a change in taste and lifestyle that influences our lives even today. Manifold kinds of cultural transfers evolved within a market framework that was not just confined to intercontinental and intra-Asiatic trade. In Europe and Asia markets for specific cultural products emerged and the transfers of objects affected domestic arts and craft production. Traditionally, relations between Europe and Asia have been studied in a hegemonic perspective, with Europe as the dominant political and economic centre. Even with respect to cultural exchange, the model of diffusion regarded Europe as the centre, and Asia the recipient, whereby Asian objects in Europe became exotica in the Kunst- und Wunderkammern. Conceptions of Europe and Asia as two monolithic regions emerged in this context. However, with the current process of globalization these constructions and the underlying models of cultural exchange have come under scrutiny. For this reason, the book focuses on cultural exchange between different European and Asian civilizations, whereby the reciprocal complexities of cultural transfers are at the centre of observation. By investigating art markets, workshops and collections in Europe and Asia the contributors exemplify the varieties of cultural exchange. The book examines the changing roles of Asian objects in European material culture and collections and puts a special emphasis on the reception of European visual arts in colonial settlements in Asia as well as in different Asian societies.

A Workshop for Peace: Designing the United Nations Headquarters
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 88.98 $George Dudley is an architect and planner who was present and kept official notes of the forty-five meetings of the international Board of Design for the United Nations. In this book he unfolds the first eyewitness account of the creation of a landmark building that was functionally and symbolically important in its time, marking the emergence of modern architecture as the dominant language of postwar institutions and cities. In tackling long-standing questions of authorship, Dudley reproduces pages from Le Corbusier's U.N. sketchbook for that period, long thought to be irretrievably lost, and sheds new light on Le Corbusier's contribution to the design process. A Workshop for Peace is an invaluable record of a design process in which the principal players - Le Corbusier, Oscar Niemeyer, Sven Markelius, Wallace Harrison, Howard Robertson, Louis Skidmore, Julio Vilamajo, Ssu-Ch'eng Liang, and Max Abramovitz disagree with one another and collaborate in turns. The Board of Design took pains to present the design as the unanimous result achieved by this group, and agreed that no individual credit should be given to any one architect. But Le Corbusier began a campaign after he left New York to claim that the central idea for the U.N.'s design was his alone. Dudley carefully analyzes the evolution of the design and compares the scheme to dated entries made in Le Corbusier's sketchbooks during the design process.

Information Hiding : 3rd International Workshop, Ih'99 Dresden, Germany, September 29-Octer 1, 1999 Proceedings
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 118.75 $Now that I have compiled these proceedings, it is a great pleasure to thank all involved. The ?rst thanks go to the scienti?c community interested in hiding infor- tion or in stopping other people doing this. At the initiative of Ross Anderson in 1995, we came together for the ?rst international meeting at IH'96 in C- bridge, andsubsequently met atIH'98in Portland. Our communitynowconsists of about 200 people collaborating around the world - and making remarkable progress.Itis ourcommonconvictionthatinthe longrun, muchmoresecurityis achievedbyopendiscussionandpublicselectionofmechanismsandimplemen- tionsthanby"securitybyobscurity".Thisisespeciallytrueforlargecommercial systems, and it is most probably also true within the ?eld of information hiding. Trying to hide the design and implementation of hiding mechanisms may be particularly tempting - since hiding is an issue anyway. But as shown by the breaks of quite a few digital copy- protection systems within the last few years, "security by obscurity" may prove not to be commercially viable, at least not in civil societies. The scienti?c community submitted 68 papers to this conference IH'99. This was many more papers than we had expected, and they were of much higher quality than we had dared to hope for. Many thanks to all authors. To cope with this situation, the program committee, consisting of Ross - derson (Cambridge University), David Aucsmith (Intel, Portland, OR), Jean- Paul Linnartz (Philips Research, Eindhoven), Steve Low (University of M- bourne), Ira Moskowitz (US Naval Research Laboratory), Jean-Jacques Quisquater(Universit´ ecatholiquedeLouvain),MichaelWaidner(IBMResearch, Zurich), and me, decided to ask additional experts to help in the review of - pers.

Algorithms in Bioinformatics : 5th International Workshop, WABI 2005, Mallorca, Spain, October 3-6, 2005, Proceedings
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 97.39 $We are pleased to present the proceedings of the 5th Workshop on Algorithms in Bioinformatics (WABI 2005) which took place in Mallorca, Spain, October 3-6, 2005. The WABI 2005 workshop was part of the ?ve ALGO 2005 conf- ence meetings, which, in addition to WABI, included ESA, WAOA, IWPEC, and ATMOS. WABI 2005 was sponsored by EATCS (the European Assoc- tion for Theoretical Computer Science), the ISCB (the International Society for Computational Biology), the Universitat Polit` ecnica de Catalunya, the U- versitat de les Illes Balears, and the Ministerio de Educaci´ on y Ciencia. See http://www.lsi.upc.edu/˜wabi05/ for more details. The Workshop on Algorithms in Bioinformatics highlights research work speci?cally developed to address algorithmic problems in biosequence analysis. Theemphasisisthereforeonstatisticalandprobabilisticalgorithmsthataddress important problems in the ?eld of molecular and structural biology. At present, given the enormous scienti?c and technical e?orts in functional and structural genomics, the relevance of the problem is therefore constrained by the need for sound, e?cient and specialized algorithms, capable of achieving solutions that can be tested by the biological community. Indeed the ultimate goal is to - plement algorithms capable of extracting real features from real biological data sets. Therefore the workshop aims to present recent research results, including signi?cant work in progress, and to identify and explore directions of future research.

Emerging Syntheses in Science: Proceedings of the Founding Workshops of the Santa Fe Institute
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 31.07 $Santa Fe, October 1984. Many of the most accomplished creative minds in science—including four Nobel laureates—gather to create an institution unlike any other: where unconventional thinking flourishes and disciplinary boundaries fall away. From this meeting emerged some of the most generative research programs of the last three decades, including the physics of living systems, the mathematics of society, quantitative archaeology, the nature of mind, fundamentals of complex systems theory—and the implications of all of these on the future. The original vision of a boundary-spanning research center became what Nature has called “that mecca of multidisciplinary complexity studies,” the Santa Fe Institute. With a new introduction by David Krakauer and Geoffrey West and an afterword by Stephen Wolfram, as well as never-before-published transcripts of the discussion sessions, this volume of seminal essays lays the foundation for thirty years of complexity science—and outlines challenges for thirty more.
