Vitra.Eames
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 127.44 $The furniture designs of Charles and Ray Eames continue to inspire questions. Why is their furniture still in production, still in demand, inspiring and timeless? Combining Charles's architectural training with Ray's passion for painting and sculpture, their talents melded to create furniture that is at once practical and playful yet with an eye towards durability of material and the timelessness of design. These objects reveal the expressive possibilities of modern components while accommodating fundamental human needs. All of these "classic" Eames elements are lusciously produced in this new publication, which, amazingly, was designed as a sales tool to the trade. Mixed with personal snapshots, ergonomic line drawings, and stunning color images of the furniture in actual contemporary settings, this is the one Eames publication to have-simple, but completely encompassing.

U.S. Penitentiary Leavenworth (Paperback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.07 $On July 1, 1895, under the direction of warden James French, the first federal prison was born. That same year, St. Louis architects Eames and Young went to work drawing up plans for an institution that would house the most notorious offenders in the nation’s history. At sunrise on March 1, 1897, 300 inmates and 30 guards marched three miles to the construction site located on the southwest corner of the military reservation. From sunup to sundown seven days a week in the hot Kansas summer to the harsh prairie winters, inmates labored building their new home. Leavenworth’s rich history as a gateway to the Old West is second to none. Name a famous figure such as George Armstrong Custer, John Joseph Pershing, Dwight D. Eisenhower, or Colin Powell. They have all graced the streets of this historic community. Equally pick a name of the most notorious criminals. George “Machine Gun” Kelly, Robert F. Stroud, Frank Nash, Frank “the Enforcer” Nitti, and George “Buggs” Moran―they all stopped by to “spend time in Leavenworth.”

More Radiant Signal [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.15 $Poetry. A chair by Charles and Ray Eames. A painting by Paul Klee. A sentence by Virginia Woolf. Juliana Leslie's debut collection MORE RADIANT SIGNAL broadcasts its elegant, probing lyricism here, among the panoply of those who worked to house extended thought in moments of compressed articulation. With haunting, painterly logic, Leslie's poems offer a world where the equivocal beauty of algebra and the aerodynamics of paper planes meet "a windowpane in love/ with a bright whirligig" to show that "[t]he boundary of the sky is a touchstone for enunciation." Is there such a thing as an impossible object? And if not, how is it that after reading MORE RADIANT SIGNAL it sits there perfectly in the center of the room.

Peter Bialobrzeski: Case Study Homes
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.03 $An ironic take on the Case Study House Program--initiated in 1945 by Arts and Architecture magazine in an effort to develop low-priced single-family homes by architects such as Richard Neutra and Charles and Ray Eames--German photographer Peter Bialobrzeski's Case Study Homes was shot at the Baseco compound, a squatter camp near the Port of Manila, which is home to an estimated 70,000 people. As Bialobrzeski was considering the series--startling images of provisional structures fashioned from slats, cardboard, corrugated metal and other cast-off materials and refuse--Lehman Brothers Bank collapsed and the media declared a global economic crisis. These recent events lend resonance to Bialobrzeski's images, which recall the photographs of impoverished rural Americans commissioned by the Farm Security Administration in the 1930s. Conceived as a sketchbook for a larger project, the images evidence the human will to survive and a profound resourcefulness.
