Career Counseling (Theories of Psychotherapy Series®)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 50.37 $In this second edition of Career Counseling, Mark L. Savickas updates his influential approach to reflect recent trends in the modern workplace such as telework, the increased use of temporary employees, and the emerging "gig economy." Career and vocational guidance have existed since the early 20th century, and has centered primarily around interest inventories and ways to match individuals to jobs. Savickas discusses and reviews this history as he presents his 21st century theory of career counseling: a therapeutic form completely different from traditional vocational guidance or career education. Rather than assuming that a person’s interests and traits exist a priori and are ready to be matched to a particular career, this narrative approach recognizes the power of the individual to construct their own career story. In this book, Savickas explores his practical approach: its theory, history, therapy process, primary change mechanisms, and the empirical basis for its effectiveness. This essential primer, amply illustrated with case examples featuring diverse clients, is perfect for graduate students studying theories of therapy and counseling, as well as for seasoned practitioners interested in understanding this approach and how it might be used in their practice.

Maria Fay's Floor Barre
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 242.08 $This book is a record of Maria Fay's Floor Barre system. It is also an account of how it evolved during the author's long and varied career as a dancer, teacher, choreographer and coach. She has worked with numerous renowned classical and contemporary companies and vocational schools in Europe and North America in the field of classical ballet and character dancing. In the process of doing so she became constantly aware of the existence of too many critically injured dancers. She observed that their healing progress was often hindered by not knowing when and how to start practising after injury, long illness, pregnancy or even after a holiday. She was also horrified to see how many dancers had to suffer from chronic injuries which they carried from their student years through their entire dancing life. She became convinced that many of the traumatic and acute injuries might have been avoided with the use of a corrective and preventative exercise regime specifically devised for the dancer's finely tuned and delicate muscle tone. Gradually she invented many new exercises as well as adopting some suitable ones from other movements such as Yoga and Pilates, and tried them out on injured dancers. She insisted on practising them in a specific order and with the correct breathing techniques. The results proved to be remarkable. Experiencing the beneficial effect on their own bodies as well as improvements to their general technique (turn-out, extension of the legs, pliability and stamina) these dancers encouraged and urged Maria Fay further to build up a complete system and publish it in a book for the benefit of the whole dance community.

The Devil's Pleasure Palace: The Cult of Critical Theory and the Subversion of the West
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 50.00 $In the aftermath of World War II, America stood alone as the world’s premier military power. Yet its martial confidence contrasted vividly with its sense of cultural inferiority. Still looking to a defeated and dispirited Europe for intellectual and artistic guidance, the burgeoning transnational elite in New York and Washington embraced not only the war’s refugees, but many of their ideas as well, and nothing has proven more pernicious than those of the Frankfurt School and its reactionary philosophy of critical theory.”In The Devil's Pleasure Palace, Michael Walsh describes how Critical Theory released a horde of demons into the American psyche. When everything could be questioned, nothing could be real, and the muscular, confident empiricism that had just won the war gave way, in less than a generation, to a central-European nihilism celebrated on college campuses across the United States. Seizing the high ground of academe and the arts, the New Nihilists set about dissolving the bedrock of the country, from patriotism to marriage to the family to military service. They have sown, as Cardinal Bergoglio now Pope Francis once wrote of the Devil, destruction, division, hatred, and calumny,” and all disguised as the search for truth. The Devil's Pleasure Palace exposes the overlooked movement that is Critical Theory and explains how it took root in America and, once established and gestated, how it has affected nearly every aspect of American life and society.
