The Forgotten: Canadian Pows, Escapers And Evaders In Europe, 193, The
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 34.00 $Unforgettable tales of heroism, bravery and escape—the remarkable true stories of Canadian soldiers and civilians lost behind enemy lines in the Second World WarThe Forgotten tells the story of the more than 10,000 Canadian servicemen, merchant mariners and civilians whose war ended in surrender, capture and imprisonment, through the eyes of a group of men in Hitler’s grasp: Private Stan Darch, who had already survived the cauldron of Dieppe; seventeen civilian priests and brothers captured at sea, one of whom risked his life to hide an escape tunnel after the Great Escape; Edward Carter-Edwards, who endured the hell of Buchenwald concentration camp; and RCAF Sergeant Ian MacDonald, who, having been on the run for six weeks after being shot down, was betrayed to the Gestapo and survived six weeks in the notorious Fresnes Prison in Paris. To survive the often horrid conditions of Stalags across Europe and the hunger marches through the freezing snows of the winter of 1944–45, these otherwise ordinary Canadians demonstrated extraordinary valour and commitment to each other and to the Allied cause.Nathan M. Greenfield, author of the Governor General’s Award finalist The Damned, shares never-before-heard stories of these forgotten Canadians in thrilling and often heartbreaking detail in a book thateveryone will remember.

The American Revolution: A World War
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.12 $A new look at the American Revolution: more than the David-versus-Goliath portrayal, it was the very first world warThe American Revolutionary War stands as a monument to freedom and democracy the world over. The American Revolution: A World War provides a fuller story of a war that involved international interest and conflict. From acts of resistance like the Boston Tea Party to the "shot heard 'round the world," the struggle for liberty and independence still resonates; this book offers new insight into the involvement of other nations and the colonists' desire for a country that symbolized their values and the pursuit of the American way of life.Spain, France, and the Dutch Republic joined the colonists' fight against the British not because they supported American independence but because they wanted to protect their own interests. These nations offered essential financial and military support to the revolutionaries, without which the colonists may not have been able to withstand British military supremacy on land and on the seas. The colonists also benefitted from a fortunate tactical advantage: distraction. Great Britain, working to protect its lucrative colonial interests in the Caribbean and India from the other European superpowers, turned its attention away from the American front, enabling colonists to make unexpected gains in the war. These and many other moments in the Revolution are explored through a global lens to offer more context for this crucial moment in history.Featuring essays from leading scholars and historians, and fully illustrated with historical military portraiture, documents, and maps indicating campaigns and territories, this book offers a completely new understanding of the American Revolution: as that of the first world war.

The Military Heroes of the War of 1812: With a Narrative of the War
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.12 $Excerpt from The Military Heroes of the War of 1812: With a Narrative of the WarThe of 1812 furnishes little to gratify the annalist until he approaches its close. The imbecility of the Generals and the number of their defeats, naturally dispirit an author. He feels the subject continually checking him; and is delighted, when the campaign of 1814 opening, affords him something beside disgrace and disaster to record. The un promising nature of the subject has prevented any writer of ability from taking it up: and hence a good history of the War of 1812 is as yet unknown to thelanguage.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Government and the War (Classic Reprint)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.38 $Excerpt from Government and the WarThe reader who has followed me thus far can see for himself whether I have described the situation as it really is. I know that many people will not face it. It seems to them too awful. They would rather shut their eyes and build castles in the air labelled 'after the War.' That seems to me the unconscious hypocrisy of despair. I have faith in my country men. Nay, more, I have faith in the French and I have faith in the Italians. But it is for my own countrymen that I am writing. I am sure that they feel with me and that they want to know the worst and to do the best. All that is required is a lead.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Counter-Revolution of 1776: Slave Resistance and the Origins of the United States of America
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.18 $Illuminates how the preservation of slavery was a motivating factor for the Revolutionary WarThe successful 1776 revolt against British rule in North America has been hailed almost universally as a great step forward for humanity. But the Africans then living in the colonies overwhelmingly sided with the British. In this trailblazing book, Gerald Horne shows that in the prelude to 1776, the abolition of slavery seemed all but inevitable in London, delighting Africans as much as it outraged slaveholders, and sparking the colonial revolt. Prior to 1776, anti-slavery sentiments were deepening throughout Britain and in the Caribbean, rebellious Africans were in revolt. For European colonists in America, the major threat to their security was a foreign invasion combined with an insurrection of the enslaved. It was a real and threatening possibility that London would impose abolition throughout the colonies—a possibility the founding fathers feared would bring slave rebellions to their shores. To forestall it, they went to war. The so-called Revolutionary War, Horne writes, was in part a counter-revolution, a conservative movement that the founding fathers fought in order to preserve their right to enslave others. The Counter-Revolution of 1776 brings us to a radical new understanding of the traditional heroic creation myth of the United States.

A.R. Penck: I Think in Pictures
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 286.15 $Showcases the work of internationally acclaimed German artist A.R. Penck (1939-2017). 2019 marks 80 years since his birth; it is also the 30-year-anniversary of the end of the Cold WarThe project honors an important artist who emigrated from East to West Germany and whose work addresses issues facing modern man in societyPublished to accompany a show at the Ashmolean, Oxford, from 27 June to 3 November, 2019The artistic language of A.R. Penck (1936–2017) – characterised by brusquely and expressively painted signs and 'primitive' symbols – is instantly recognisable. Abiding interests in systems theory and cybernetics, as well as pre-historic cultures and science fiction, guided his art toward an investigation of the relationships between man and society's power systems. His prolific artistic output was primarily driven by his desire to create a universal artistic language that addresses the issues facing modern man. This publication accompanies A.R. Penck's first solo exhibition in Oxford. It features works created between 1970 and 1990 and introduces his art to an audience that might be unfamiliar with it by focussing on the artist's signature motif of the Standart stick figure in its diverse forms. The artist was born as Ralf Winkler in Dresden, East Germany. Rejected by the establishment for the decidedly un-academic style of his works and their political overtones, he persisted as an ‘underground' autodidact in what was then the GDR. He adopted the pseudonym A.R. Penck to counter difficulties with East German authorities who banned his works from public exhibition. With the aid of friends, his works were smuggled to West Germany, where they were exhibited for the first time in 1968 in Cologne. In 1980, Penck emigrated to the West, first living outside Cologne, then in London and Ireland, often dividing his time between different locations.

A Savage War
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 38.82 $How the Civil War changed the face of warThe Civil War represented a momentous change in the character of war. It combined the projection of military might across a continent on a scale never before seen with an unprecedented mass mobilization of peoples. Yet despite the revolutionizing aspects of the Civil War, its leaders faced the same uncertainties and vagaries of chance that have vexed combatants since the days of Thucydides and the Peloponnesian War. A Savage War sheds critical new light on this defining chapter in military history. In a masterful narrative that propels readers from the first shots fired at Fort Sumter to the surrender of Robert E. Lee's army at Appomattox, Williamson Murray and Wayne Wei-siang Hsieh bring every aspect of the battlefield vividly to life. They show how this new way of waging war was made possible by the powerful historical forces unleashed by the Industrial Revolution and the French Revolution, yet how the war was far from being simply a story of the triumph of superior machines. Despite the Union’s material superiority, a Union victory remained in doubt for most of the war. Murray and Hsieh paint indelible portraits of Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman, and other major figures whose leadership, judgment, and personal character played such decisive roles in the fate of a nation. They also examine how the Army of the Potomac, the Army of Northern Virginia, and the other major armies developed entirely different cultures that influenced the war’s outcome.A military history of breathtaking sweep and scope, A Savage War reveals how the Civil War ushered in the age of modern warfare.
