It presents two hundred color images of the artist’s work—the majority drawn from private collections, and thus rarely seen in public. We see him drawing on Surrealism and naive art, but then going beyond those schools to develop new forms of expression within abstract art. Wols, als Alfred Otto Wolfgang Schulze in einen höheren Dresdner Beamtenhaushalt hineingeboren, war in einer Mischung aus beruflicher Orientierungslosigkeit und Wehrdienstverweigerung 1932 nach Frankreich emigriert, wo er mit bedeutenden Persönlichkeiten wie Sartre, Artaud und Henri-Pierre Roché zusammentraf und sich zunächst einen Namen als Photograph, Aquarellist und Buchillustrator machte.Ab 1945 dominierte die Ölmalerei sein Werk.
