Diese Organisation war im 19. Jahrhundert zum wichtigsten Zentrum der europaischen Erweckungsbewegung, einer kritischen Erneuerungsbewegung innerhalb des Protestantismus, geworden. Der pietistisch-erwecklichen Glaubensart zugehorig zahlte sich auch die Gesellschaftsschicht, die damals das offentliche Leben der Stadt bestimmte. Nach den Trennungswirren der 1830er Jahre gingen diese Kreise eine intensive Verbindung mit dem politischen Konservatismus ein, bis sie, bedrangt vom aufkommenden politischen und kirchlichen Liberalismus der 1880er Jahre, den Radikalen und kirchlich Liberalen Macht und Einfluss uberlassen mussten. In eben dieser Zeit hielt sich der Philosoph Friedrich Nietzsche in der Rheinstadt auf. Noch nicht funfundzwanzig Jahre alt, war Nietzsche 1869 auf den Lehrstuhl fur griechische Sprache und Literatur der Universitat Basel berufen worden und blieb hier zehn Jahre. Nietzsche, einer der prononciertesten Kritiker des Christentums in der abendlandischen Geistesgeschichte, war in einem deutschen Pfarrhaus aufgewachsen. Schon in seinem Elternhaus, aber auch wahrend seiner Schul- und ersten Studienzeit war er mit der pietistisch-erwecklichen Frommigkeit in engen Kontakt gekommen, die er nun auch in Basel wieder antraf. Gerade auch im Kreis seiner Basler Bekannten war dies die vorherrschende Glaubensrichtung und hatte auf den Denker und seine Schriften nicht unwesentlichen Einfluss.

Dennoch waren die Rahmenbedingungen immer noch ganz andere als heute: Wer damals ein Buch schrieb, verfasste oftmals ein Lebenswerk. Dies spiegelt sich in der hohen Qualität alter Bücher wider. Leider altern Bücher. Papier ist nicht für die Ewigkeit gemacht. English summary: As a very late and pseudepigraphical text, the Second Epistle of Peter is not always seen as an integral and fitting part of the New Testament canon. By highlighting its individual literary and theological profile as well as its various connections to early Christian literature inside and outside of later canonical collections, the present volume aims to contribute to a better informed and more detailed appreciation of both the irritating and inspiring aspects of Second Peter. The contributions cover a wide range of topics such as the canonical significance of the epistle, its intertextual and tradition-historical links, its contribution to the doctrine of inspiration, the ""New Perspective on Second Peter"", Second Peter's re-use of traditions about Lot and even the presence of Second Peter in early modern translations of the New Testament into Hebrew.
