Annals (Hardcover)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 33.89 $Tacitus (Cornelius), famous Roman historian, was born in 55, 56 or 57 CE and lived to about 120. He became an orator, married in 77 a daughter of Julius Agricola before Agricola went to Britain, was quaestor in 81 or 82, a senator under the Flavian emperors, and a praetor in 88. After four years' absence he experienced the terrors of Emperor Domitian's last years and turned to historical writing. He was a consul in 97. Close friend of the younger Pliny, with him he successfully prosecuted Marius Priscus.Works: (i) Life and Character of Agricola, written in 97–98, specially interesting because of Agricola's career in Britain. (ii) Germania (98–99), an equally important description of the geography, anthropology, products, institutions, and social life and the tribes of the Germans as known to the Romans. (iii) Dialogue on Oratory (Dialogus), of unknown date; a lively conversation about the decline of oratory and education. (iv) Histories (probably issued in parts from 105 onwards), a great work originally consisting of at least twelve books covering the period 69–96 CE, but only Books I–IV and part of Book V survive, dealing in detail with the dramatic years 69–70. (v) Annals, Tacitus's other great work, originally covering the period 14–68 CE (Emperors Tiberius, Gaius, Claudius, Nero) and published between 115 and about 120. Of sixteen books at least, there survive Books I–IV (covering the years 14–28); a bit of Book V and all Book VI (31–37); part of Book XI (from 47); Books XII–XV and part of Book XVI (to 66).Tacitus is renowned for his development of a pregnant concise style, character study, and psychological analysis, and for the often terrible story which he brilliantly tells. As a historian of the early Roman empire he is paramount. The Loeb Classical Library edition of Tacitus is in five volumes.

The Annals of London
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 86.58 $There is a mine of information in this large, illustrated chronicle of London which presents almost a thousand years of history through year-by-year accounts. After a general overview of prehistoric and Saxon London, Richardson begins with 1065 and the causes of the Norman Conquest and ends with the erection of the Dome and the London Eye. In between are entries which illustrate the daily life, disasters and achievements of London as well as other events, such as the siege of 1141 and the plague in 1348, which reflect national crises. The Annals of Albany, Vol. 6 (Classic Reprint)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.72 $Excerpt from The Annals of Albany, Vol. 6All the inventions and improvements of modern times, if measured by their effects upon the condition of society, sink into insignificance, when compared with the extraordinary results which have followed the employment of steam as a mechanical agent. We may therefore be allowed to dwell a little upon its early history. The force of steam, although it appears to have been known before the Christian era, was nearly altogether overlooked until within the last two centuries. The most important application of it which appears to have been made by the ancients, was in the construction of the instrument which they called Ælopile, that is, the ball of Æolus. By this contrivance a ball was forced out of a cup and suspended in the air, the extent of its elevation depending on the force of the steam. Similar philosophic toys were constructed by Hero, a Greek residing at Alexandria.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Annals of Native America : How the Nahuas of Colonial Mexico Kept Their History Alive
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 49.72 $For many generations, the Nahuas of Mexico maintained their tradition of the xiuhpohualli. or "year counts," telling and performing their history around communal firesides so that the memory of it would not be lost. When the Spaniards came, young Nahuas took the Roman letters taught to them by the friars and used the new alphabet to record historical performances by elders. Between them, they wrote hundreds of pages, which circulated widely within their communities. Over the next century and a half, their descendants copied and recopied these texts, sometimes embellishing, sometimes extracting, and often expanding them chronologically. The annals, as they have usually been called, were written not only by Indians but also for Indians, without regard to European interests. As such they are rare and inordinately valuable texts. They have often been assumed to be both largely anonymous and at least partially inscrutable to modern ears. In this work, Nahuatl scholar Camilla Townsend reveals the authors of most of the texts, restores them to their proper contexts, and makes sense of long misunderstood documents. She follows a remarkable chain of Nahua historians, generation by generation, exploring who they were, what they wrote, and why they wrote it. Sometimes they conceived of their work as a political act, reinstating bonds between communities, or between past, present, and future generations. Sometimes they conceived of it largely as art and delighted in offering language that was beautiful or startling or humorous. Annals of Native America brings together, for the first time, samples of their many creations to offer a heretofore obscured history of the Nahuas and an alternate perspective on the Conquest and its aftermath.

Annals Histories Agricola Germania
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 3.43 $The complete historical works of the greatest chronicler of the Roman Empire in a wholly revised and updated translation.A brilliant narrator and a master stylist, Tacitus served as administrator and senator, a career that gave him an intimate view of the empire at its highest levels, and of the dramatic, violent, and often bloody events of the first century. In the Annals, he writes about Augustus Caesar’s death and observes the inner workings of the courts of the emperors Tiberius and Nero. In the Histories, he describes an empire in tumult, four emperors reigning in one year, each overthrown by the next. The Agricola, a biography of Tacitus’s father-in-law, Julius Agricola—the most celebrated governor of Roman Britain—is the first detailed account of the island that would eventually rule over a quarter of the earth. And in the Germania, the famed warrior-barbarians of ancient Germany come richly to life.

The Annals of Sennacherib
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 66.69 $Sennacharib had evidently long since made up his mind as to the manner in which Babylonian pride was to be handled. He did not take the hand of Marduk as viceroy, but he had himself proclaimed king of Babylon, and and this without using a second name as Tiglath-pileser had done. Nor does he seem to have taken the trouble to honor Marduk by calling on him in his temple. --from Chapter 2 Sennacherib, the great king, the mighty king, king of the universe, king of Assyria, king of the four quarters; the shepherd, favorite of the great gods, guardian of the right, lover of justice; who lends support, who comes to the aid of the needy, who turns to pious deeds; . . . the god Assur, the great mountain, an unrivaled kingship has entrusted to me, and above all those who dwell in palaces, has made powerful my weapons; from the upper sea of the setting sun to the lower sea of the rising sun, all the black-headed race he has brought in submission at my feet and mighty kings feared my warfare. --from the Oriental Institute Prism
