Antonello da Messina (ca. 1430 1479) was one of the most groundbreaking and influential painters of the quattrocento. No other Italian artist of the fifteenth-century responded in such a direct fashion to the great masters of Bruges and Brussels (including use of their oil technique), to the brilliant Provencal painters, and to the established giants of Italian art, such as Piero della Francesca and Mantegna. In so doing he created unique images with a harmonious and geometrical clarity, yet included exquisite descriptive passages. Art historians believe that Antonello began painting his first portraits in the late 1960s. They follow a Dutch model, with the object displayed with a bust of a dark background, a front or three-fourths, while most of the previous Italian artists have adopted the medal style profile for individual portraits.Although Antonello was mentioned in many papers between 1460 and 1465, there is a further gap in the time sources between 1465 and 1471. This fact leads his biographers to suggest that he may have spent these years in Europe.Antonello departed for Venice in 1475 and remained there until the fall of 1476. His works of this period began to show more attention to the human figure, both in terms of anatomy and expression, which implied the influence of Piero della Francesca and Giovanni Bellini. While in Venice, he was offered but was not accepted by him, the opportunity to become a portrait artist of the Duke of Milan.Antonello returned to Sicily in September 1476. End-of-life works include the famous Virgins Annunciate, and the San Gregorio Polyptych.He died in Messina in 1479. Some of his latest works remained unfinished but were completed by his son Jacobello.In general, Antonello's style is remarkable for the fusion of Italian simplicity with Flemish concern and precision for details. He exerted a significant influence on Italian painting, not only by introducing the Flemish style into it but also by passing on the new Flemish tendencies. However, after his death, he did not form his painting school except for his only follower, Sicilian artist Marco Costanzo.

In The Greening of Antarctica Alessandro Antonello investigates the development of an international regime of environmental protection and management between the signing of the Antarctic Treaty in 1959 and the signing of the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources in 1980. In those two decades, the Antarctic Treaty parties and an international community of scientists reimagined what many considered a cold, sterile, and abiotic wilderness as a fragile and extensive regional ecosystem. Antonello investigates this change by analyzing the negotiations and developments surrounding four environmental agreements: the Agreed Measures for the Conservation of Antarctic Fauna and Flora in 1964; the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Seals in 1972; a voluntary restraint resolution on Antarctic mining in 1977; and the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources in 1980. Though distant from world populations, Antarctica has long been a site of inter-state contest for geopolitical power and standing. This book reveals how a range of contests, geopolitical, epistemic and imaginative, created the environmental protection regime of the Antarctic Treaty System, and discusses the tension between states' individual searches for power and the collective desire for stability in the region.
