Antonello da Messina: Sicily's Renaissance Master
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 15.44 $Antonello da Messina (ca. 1430 1479) was one of the most groundbreaking and influential painters of the quattrocento. No other Italian artist of the fifteenth-century responded in such a direct fashion to the great masters of Bruges and Brussels (including use of their oil technique), to the brilliant Provencal painters, and to the established giants of Italian art, such as Piero della Francesca and Mantegna. In so doing he created unique images with a harmonious and geometrical clarity, yet included exquisite descriptive passages. Although Antonello worked primarily in Sicily, his travels to Naples and Venice were influential to the development of his style, and where he in turn had an enormous impact on painting.Antonello da Messina: Sicily’s Renaissance Master includes an informative essay by Gioacchino Barbera and entries on seven works that will be seen for the first time in the United States as part of a focus exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, including Antonello’s masterpiece, the Virgin of the Annunciation from Palermo, whose haunting beauty has been compared to Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

Antonello da Messina: Inside Painting
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 220.00 $The essential book on the Italian master of perspective and portraitureAntonello da Messina is one of the earliest virtuosos of oil painting, a true Renaissance master who―via the influence of the Flemish painters―raised perspective and geometric rigor to new heights of clarity and serenity. His mastery of the three-quarter profile portrait is another of his key accomplishments. With 300 color plates, and at 340 pages, this book is the most comprehensive monograph available in English, and the first substantial Antonello publication in decades. Today Antonello is most celebrated for paintings such as his Crucifixion in Bucharest and the Salvator Mundi, Madonna with Child and Saint Jerome in His Study in London. These works, alongside his portraits, embody his accomplishments in realism and the steady, calm atmosphere he brought to Italian painting. This exceptional publication fills a longstanding and conspicuous gap in the literature on Italian Renaissance art. Antonello da Messina (c. 1430–79) was one of the most groundbreaking and influential painters of the Quattrocento. Born in Sicily and trained in Naples where he studied the work of Provençal and Flemish artists, he is often supposed to have encountered the pioneering art of Van Eyck at this time, whose influence he seems to have imported into Italy. Antonello's impact was particularly keenly felt in Venice, where he lived from 1475 to 1476; within a short time of his arrival, his work attracted so much favorable attention that he was supported by the Venetian state and local painters enthusiastically adopted his oil technique and compositional style.

Antonello Da Messina: Drawings & Paintings (Annotated)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.42 $Art historians believe that Antonello began painting his first portraits in the late 1960s. They follow a Dutch model, with the object displayed with a bust of a dark background, a front or three-fourths, while most of the previous Italian artists have adopted the medal style profile for individual portraits.Although Antonello was mentioned in many papers between 1460 and 1465, there is a further gap in the time sources between 1465 and 1471. This fact leads his biographers to suggest that he may have spent these years in Europe.Antonello departed for Venice in 1475 and remained there until the fall of 1476. His works of this period began to show more attention to the human figure, both in terms of anatomy and expression, which implied the influence of Piero della Francesca and Giovanni Bellini. While in Venice, he was offered but was not accepted by him, the opportunity to become a portrait artist of the Duke of Milan.Antonello returned to Sicily in September 1476. End-of-life works include the famous Virgins Annunciate, and the San Gregorio Polyptych. He died in Messina in 1479. Some of his latest works remained unfinished but were completed by his son Jacobello. In general, Antonello's style is remarkable for the fusion of Italian simplicity with Flemish concern and precision for details. He exerted a significant influence on Italian painting, not only by introducing the Flemish style into it but also by passing on the new Flemish tendencies. However, after his death, he did not form his painting school except for his only follower, Sicilian artist Marco Costanzo.

The Greening of Antarctica
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 69.47 $In The Greening of Antarctica Alessandro Antonello investigates the development of an international regime of environmental protection and management between the signing of the Antarctic Treaty in 1959 and the signing of the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources in 1980. In those two decades, the Antarctic Treaty parties and an international community of scientists reimagined what many considered a cold, sterile, and abiotic wilderness as a fragile and extensive regional ecosystem. Antonello investigates this change by analyzing the negotiations and developments surrounding four environmental agreements: the Agreed Measures for the Conservation of Antarctic Fauna and Flora in 1964; the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Seals in 1972; a voluntary restraint resolution on Antarctic mining in 1977; and the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources in 1980. Though distant from world populations, Antarctica has long been a site of inter-state contest for geopolitical power and standing. This book reveals how a range of contests, geopolitical, epistemic and imaginative, created the environmental protection regime of the Antarctic Treaty System, and discusses the tension between states' individual searches for power and the collective desire for stability in the region. In this international and diplomatic context, the actors were not only trying to keep relations between themselves orderly, but they were also using treaties to order the human relationship with the environment. Drawing on a wide range of international archives, many newly-opened, The Greening of Antarctica offers the first detailed narrative of a crucial period in Antarctic history and reveals the contours of global environmental thought and diplomacy in the transformative Age of Ecology.

Nature in the New World: From Christopher Columbus to Gonzalo Fernandez de Oviedo [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.41 $In Nature in the New World (translated 1985), Antonello Gerbi examines the fascinating reports of the first Europeans to see the Americas. These accounts provided the basis for the images of strange and new flora, fauna, and human creatures that filled European imaginations. Initial chapters are devoted to the writings of Columbus, Vespucci, Cortés, Verrazzano, and others. The second portion of the book concerns the Historia general y natural de las Indias of Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo, a work commissioned by Charles V of Spain in 1532 but not published in its entirety until the 1850s. Antonello Gerbi contends that Oviedo, a Spanish administrator who lived in Santo Domingo, has been unjustly neglected as a historian. Gerbi shows that Oviedo was a major authority on the culture, history, and conquest of the New World.
