Scholies à Apollonios de Rhodes. Bilingue

The Argonautika by Apollonios Rhodios
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 349.76 $The first commentary since 1912 on all four books of the Argonautika , the tale of Jason and the quest for the Golden Fleece, is accompanied by a dynamic translation of the Hellenistic epic which was a radical depature from the Homeric tradition, featuring a rather unsensational hero whose best quality is being a hit with the ladies, and a heroine who is a major chracter in her own right: a virgin sorceress whose magic brings Jason's triumph yet cannot save her from her own infatuation. The introduction discusses Apollonios in his Alexandrian world and proposes a new understanding of his poetic puropse and acheivement. The commentary is especially good at explaining mythical allusions which abound.

Last of the Cape Horners
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 96.45 $When we think of commercial sailing, most of us are apt to picture square-riggers as vessels of the nineteenth century or earlier. Yet the graceful, multi-masted beauties of our imaginations actually sailed on into the 1950s before they disappeared from the seas forever. Veteran sailor Spencer Apollonio has selected from little-known sources some of the best-written and most representative accounts of life aboard the last of these ships that sailed around the southern tip of South America --- the fabled "Cape Horners." Written by officers, crewmen, and passengers aboard American, British, and Finnish vessels, they provide a realistic picture of a maritime era the likes of which will not ever be seen again.

Death at Pergamum: A Getorius and Arcadia Mystery
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.98 $October A.D. 440: Roman surgeon Getorius Asterius and wife Arcadia arrive at Constantinople with their slave, Brisios, and guide Herakles. Caught in a bread riot, they board a galley of ill patients sailing to the Asklepion, a pagan healing center at Pergamum. There physician Apollonios, an enemy of a woman Christian minister, Epiphania, has been accused of burning her church. Presumed dead, she is hiding in an abandoned Egyptian temple and planning a bizarre resurrection ritual to discredit Apollonios. When abusive patient Basina Bobo is found drowned in a therapeutic mud pool, her meek husband and slave-lover, Hermias, are missing. Getorius assumes the slave killed his masters, but when his mutilated body is found, Flavius is suspected. He surprises Ephania in the temple, rants against all women, and stabs her in the abdomen. Mortally wounded she insists on being carried to the "Throne of Satan" on the ancient acropolis for the Egypto-Christian ritual. She dies there and fanatical monks incite spectators into destroying the Asklepion. Herakles disappears, stranding the couple. Brisios, freed in a manumission ceremony, finds his misplaced love to be a heart-breaking blunder in his new found liberty. A harrowing climax occurs in the temple of the god Asklepios, where a traitorous plot is thwarted.
