Aristotle Onassis
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 51.65 $Editorial Review - Kirkus Reviews He lived and he died, and nothing in this massive dossier compiled by a London Sunday Times team gives force or meaning to Onassis' life but an occasional quote: ""One of the most tragic things,"" a friend observed towards the end, ""was to see this most enchanting and fascinating of men become a bore."" The rebellious Smyrna child caught the popular imagination by his pranks; the buccaneering tanker-man led the flight from costly British or US regulation to the ""flags of convenience""; the solicitous host raised spoonfuls of caviar to the aging Churchill's lips. Intensity of attention to persons, intensity of application to business--and daring: these, one concludes from this and every other account, set Onassis apart and formed the basis of both his legend and his fortune. He had otherwise no accomplishments--no land-based investment as a monument, no innovation or masterstroke that was not a financial manipulation, temporal and transient. What Fraser and his fellow-researchers have done is to disprove some of Onassis' claims and disclose additional details that, in some cases, make provisional judgments final. Thus, it appears from an unreleased report that ""the aileron controls had indeed been reversed"" on the plane whose crash ted to son Alexander's death. It also appears that the long post-mortem owes more to the authors' possession of privileged information than to what it adds to an appreciation of Onassis' grief. This is wall-to-wall journalism, as if everything said and done were still important, with the result that the aborted Omega-project negotiations take on the dimensions of a Constitutional Convention. The telling is toneless, mirthless, and virtually emotionless. About Jackie, one hears the same Onassis-originated innuendos that surfaced just before and after his death; she and her intimates haven't talked. But there's lots here, for the reader to make of it what the authors haven't.

Aristotle: History of Animals, Books I-III (1-3) (Aristotle IX) (Loeb Classical Library Number 437).
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.00 $In History of Animals, Aristotle analyzes “differences”―in parts, activities, modes of life, and character―across the animal kingdom, in preparation for establishing their causes, which are the concern of his other zoological works. Over 500 species of animals are considered: shellfish, insects, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals―including human beings. In Books I–IV, Aristotle gives a comparative survey of internal and external body parts, including tissues and fluids, and of sense faculties and voice. Books V–VI study reproductive methods, breeding habits, and embryogenesis as well as some secondary sex differences. In Books VII–IX, Aristotle examines differences among animals in feeding; in habitat, hibernation, migration; in enmities and sociability; in disposition (including differences related to gender) and intelligence. Here too he describes the human reproductive system, conception, pregnancy, and obstetrics. Book X establishes the female’s contribution to generation. The Loeb Classical Library® edition of History of Animals is in three volumes. A full index to all ten books is included in the third (Volume XI of the Aristotle edition).Related VolumesAristotle’s biological corpus includes not only History of Animals, but also Parts of Animals, Movement of Animals, Progression of Animals, Generation of Animals, and significant parts of On the Soul and Parva Naturalia. Aristotle’s general methodology―“first we must grasp the differences, then try to discover the causes” (Ha 1.6)―is applied to the study of plants by his younger co-worker and heir to his school, Theophrastus: Enquiry into Plants studies differences across the plant kingdom, while De Causis Plantarum studies their causes. In the later ancient world, both Pliny’s Natural History and Aelian’s On the Characteristics of Animals draw significantly on Aristotle’s biological work.

Aristotle's Topics (Philosophia Antiqua) (English and Greek Edition)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 177.77 $This work deals with Aristotle's Topics, a textbook on how to argue successfully in a debate organised in a certain way. The origins of the three branches of logic can be found here: logic of propositions, of predicates and of relations.Having dealt with the structure of the dialectical debates and the theory of the predicables, the central notion of the topos is analysed. Topoi are principles of arguments designed to help a disputant refute his opponent and function as hypotheses in hypothetical syllogisms, the main form of argument in the Topics. Traces of the crystallization of their theory can be found in the Topics and Analytics. The author analyses a selection of topoi including those according to which categorical and relational syllogisms are constructed.

From Aristotle to Darwin and Back Again: A Journey in Final Causality, Species and Evolution
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 34.98 $Darwin's theory of evolution remains controversial, even though most scientists, philosophers, and even theologians accept it, in some form, as an explanation for the variety of organisms. The controversy erupts when the theory is used to try to explain everything, including every aspect of human life, and to deny the role of a Creator or a purpose to life. The overreaching of many scientists into matters beyond the self-imposed limits of scientific method is perhaps explained in part by the loss of two important ideas in modern thinking―final causality or purpose, and formal causality. Scientists understandably bracket the idea out of their scientific thinking because they seek explanations on the level of material and efficient causes only. Yet many of them wrongly conclude from their selective study of the world that final and formal causes do not exist at all and that they have no place in the rational study of life. Likewise, many erroneously assume that philosophy cannot draw upon scientific findings, in light of final and formal causality, to better understand the world and man.The great philosopher and historian of philosophy, Etienne Gilson, sets out to show that final causality or purposiveness and formal causality are principles for those who think hard and carefully about the world, including the world of biology. Gilson insists that a completely rational understanding of organisms and biological systems requires the philosophical notion of teleology, the idea that certain kinds of things exist and have ends or purposes the fulfillment of which are linked to their natures―in other words, formal and final causes. His approach relies on philosophical reflection on the facts of science, not upon theology or an appeal to religious authorities such as the Church or the Bible.

Aristotle's Philosophical Development
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 200.00 $For most of this century, Aristotelian scholarship was dominated by a single question: how might Aristotle's intellectual development be used to shed light on his philosophical doctrines? Opinions differed widely as to how this growth was to be charted; eventually, a reaction to the whole enterprise set in, and the past thirty years have seen the question lose its prominence. Recently, certain scholars have reopened the question. In this collection of new essays, sixteen distinguished scholars reconsider the promise and limitations of developmentalism, with contributions devoted to Aristotle's logic and epistemology, physics, biology and psychology, ethics and politics, and metaphysics. Also included are classic developmental studies by Anton-Hermann Chroust and Thomas Case. Contributors: Enrico Berti, Klaus Brinkmann, Thomas Case, Anton-Hermann Chroust, John Cleary, Alan Code, Russell Dancy, Cynthia Freeland, Daniel Graham, Jaako Hintikka, James Lennox, Deborah Modrak, Pierre Pellegrin, John M. Rist, William Wians, and Charlotte Witt.

Aristotle Poetics
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.91 $"An intellectual adventure of the most stimulating kind." — The New York TimesThis book contains the celebrated Butcher translation of Aristotle's Poetics, faced, page by page, with the complete Greek text ( as reconstructed by Mr. Butcher from Greek, Latin, and Arabic manuscripts). The editor's 300-page exposition and interpretation follows. In his classic commentary, Butcher discusses with insight, sympathy, and great learning Aristotle's ideas and their importance in the history of thought and literature. His scholarly remarks cover art and nature, imitation as an aesthetic term, poetic truth, pleasure as the end of fine art, art and morality, the function of tragedy, the dramatic unities, the ideal tragic hero, plot and character, comedy, and poetic universality. A new 35-page introductory essay, "Aristotelian Literary Criticism" by John Glassner, discusses the validity of Aristotle's ideas today and their application to contemporary literature."No edition with commentary can be recommended to English readers with such confidence as Butcher's." — George Saintsbury"One of the finest treatises on aesthetic theory — neither the literature nor the criticism of the past 40 years has rendered Aristotelian criticism irrelevant or obsolete." — Modern Schoolman

Aristotle's Physics, Books One and Two
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 65.36 $In the first two books of the Physics Aristotle discusses philosophical issues involved in the investigation of the physical universe. He introduces his distinction between form and matter and his fourfold classification of causes or explanatory factors, and defends teleological explanation. These books therefore form a natural entry into Aristotle's system as a whole, and also occupy an important place in the history of scientific thought. The present volume provides a close literal translation, which can be used by serious students without Greek. The introduction and commentary deal with the interpretation and assessment, from a philosophical standpoint, of what Aristotle says. This translation was first published in 1970.

Aristotle*s Laptop: The Discovery of Our Informational Mind
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 70.76 $Aristotle's convincing philosophy is likely to have shaped (even indirectly) many of our current beliefs, prejudices and attitudes to life. This includes the way in which our mind (that is, our capacity to have private thoughts) appears to elude a scientific description. This book is about a scientific ingredient that was not available to Aristotle: the science of information. Would the course of the philosophy of the mind have been different had Aristotle pronounced that the matter of mind was information? This “mind is information” assertion is often heard in contemporary debates, and this book explores the verities and falsehoods of this proposition.
