Arthurian Sources Volume 4: People & Places and Saxon Archaeology
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 55.62 $When the late Dr. Morris wrote The Age of Arthur he expected that it would soon be complemented by nine volumes of Arthurian Period Sources providing the evidential foundation upon which his narrative history of sub-Roman Britain rested. They were to provide the reader with material permitting direct evaluation of the problems faced by historians studying British and Irish events of the 4th to the 7th centuries. He died leaving three volumes almost ready, gildas, Nennius and St Patrick, which were published shortly after his death as Vols. 7, 8, and 9, but the first six volumes were still a vast mass of papers which have taken several years to organise for publication. The first phase in the preparation of these volumes was under the supervision of Professor John McNeal Dodgson, Morris's colleague and friend; but he too dies prematurely the work was again subjected to delay. now, thanks to the generous assistance of a number of distinguished scholars who wished to see Morris's scheme completed, the six long-awaited volumes of Arthurian Sources are at last available. Together, these nine volumes make readily accessible an unparalleled corpus of source material for the student of the Dark-Age history of the British Isles. It is possible to disagree with Morris, in some of his interpretations and conclusions, but it is not possible to ignore his challenging approach to the study of the period. Nor is it possible to disagree with his conviction that the source material should be more readily available. Morris believed that the defence of conventional attitudes would diminish as a result of easier access to the sources and to the detailed arguments on which he based his interpretations. Students of the Dark Ages and of the beginnings of modern Britain will welcome the publication, albeit belatedly, of this important source material.

Arthurian Romances, Tales and Lyric Poetry: The Complete Works of Hartmann Von Aue
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 72.55 $Hartmann von Aue (c. 1170–1215) is universally recognized as the first medieval German poet to create world-class literature. He crafted German into a language of refined literary expression that paved the way for writers such as Gottfried von Strassburg, Walther von der Vogelweide, and Wolfram von Eschenbach. This volume presents the English reader for the first time with the complete works of Hartmann in readable, idiomatic English. Hartmann's literary efforts cover all the major genres and themes of medieval courtly literature. His Arthurian romances, Erec and Iwein, which he modeled after Chrétien de Troyes, introduced the Arthurian world to German audiences and set the standard for later German writers. His lyric poetry treats many aspects of courtly love, including fine examples of the crusading song. His dialogue on love delineates the theory of courtly relationships between the sexes and the quandary the lover experiences. His verse novellas Gregorius and Poor Heinrich transcend the world of mere human dimensions and examine the place and duties of the human in the divine scheme of things. Longfellow would later use Poor Heinrich in his Golden Legend.Arthurian Romances, Tales, and Lyric Poetry is a major work destined to place Hartmann at the center of medieval courtly literature for English readers.

Arthurian Chronicles (MART: The Medieval Academy Reprints for Teaching)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 4.45 $The spread of the Arthurian legend during the course of the twelfth century is one of the most remarkable phenomena in literary history. Arthurian Chronicles looks at two unsung but deserving poets who contributed to the diffusion of the legend, Wace who preceded the more famous Chretien de Troyes, and Layamon, who followed him.Wace was of an inquiring turn of mind, with, for his day, a scholarly and sceptical approach to lais, marvellous tales, and fables. `Not all lies, nor all true, all foolishness, nor all sense. So much have the story-tellers told, and so much have the makers of fables fabled to embellish their stories, that they have made all seem fable,' he writes. He was the first to mention the famous Round Table. In Layamon's Brut, Arthur, hero and emperor, makes his first appearance in English vernacular literature. It is Layamon who tells of the elves that attended on the infant Arthur and endowed him with gifts and qualities; he also launched Arthur after his last battle to Argante in Avallon, to be healed of his wounds. In this English language prose translation of the Wace and Layamon Arthurian poems, the folk-tale ferocity of Arthur is made as exciting to the readers as to the poets who contributed so much to Arthur's legend.Originally published by J.M. Dent & Sons,1962.
