Austria's Wars of Emergence, 1683-1797

This book shows that force of arms and the instruments of the early modern state were just as important as its marriage policy in creating and holding together the Habsburg Monarchy.Drawing on an impressive up-to-date bibliography as well as on original archival research, this survey is the first to put Vienna’s military back at the centre stage of early modern Austrian history.

Austria (Premium)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 156.12 $Between Lake Constance and Lake Neusiedler, in the middle of the Bregenz Forest and the Vienna Woods, this guide conveys the magnificent, enthralling, and beautiful scenery of Austria. Lofty peaks, deep-cut valleys, crystal-clear lakes, and lush mountain pastures grace this collection of images, along with the lazy meanderings of the Danube, gently rolling hills, terraces of vines, and the Pannonian Plain. Relating the country’s grand history, medieval strongholds, baroque palaces, churches, and monasteries are depicted as well as Jugendstil edifices and fantastical contemporary architecture, bearing witness to the cultural diversity of this Alpine republic. The Salzburg Festspiele, the Vienna Boys' Choir, and the waltz plus a vast collection of major works of art are reviewed, forming only a small part of Austria's rich artistic heritage. The charm and comfort of the imperial and royal age of the Habsburgs is captured, having been preserved in many a wine tavern, pub, and coffee house. Idyllic mountain village traditions are illustrated in local costume parades and the celebration of joyous festivals. This travel companion also features the age-old dynasty of the Habsburgs, the musical city of Vienna, the baroque monasteries of the Danube, the mountains of the Hohe Tauern, the culinary delights of Austria, and the country's many achievements in contemporary architecture.

Austria and the Papacy in the Age of Metternich [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.00 $This is the first study of a major but previously neglected aspect of 19th century history: the relationship between Austria and the Papacy during the four decades when Metternich guided Habsburg foreign policy. For Metternich, relations with Rome were of major significance for his defense of the Austrian Empire and the Restoration Order against the revolutionary challenge, for his Italian policy and for his involvement in the domestic affairs of the Empire. For the Papacy, the relationship with Austria was decisively important for its foreign policy, for its regime in the Papal State and for the formation of its attitude to the rising currents of liberalism and nationalism, in short, for the fate of the Temporal Power and the proper role of the Papacy in the modern world. This first of two volumes revolves around Metternich's attempt to replace the hostility and distrust which characterized Austro-Papal relations when he came to power in 1809 with a new relationship based on cooperation. Metternich devoted the rest of his career to this goal, but during the period covered by this volume his success was limited. Cardinal Consalvi, the able Secretary of State of Pius VII (1800-1823), at first favored cooperation but was later alienated when Metternich sought to tighten Austrian control over Italy in the wake of the 1820 revolutions. Relations remained chilly during the early years of Pope Leo XII (1823-29), but the growing revolutionary danger in the Papal State had compelled the Papacy to take a more favorable positions. This favorable trend was continued by the Austrophile Pius VIII (1829-30), but his sudden death at the end of 1830 signalled the revolution in the Papal State which Metternich had long feared and tried in vain to prevent. The revolution of 1831 opened a new phase of Austro-Papal relations which will be the subject of the second volume of this work.
