Hans Bellmer: The Doll (Atlas Anti-classics) [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 202.31 $German artist Hans Bellmer (1902–1975) was one of the most subversive artists associated with Surrealism, famous--notorious, even--for his erotic engravings, objects and photographs. The first edition of The Doll comprised a series of Bellmer’s photographs “illustrated” with prose poems by Paul Éluard; Bellmer’s hand-colored photographs subsequently acquired an iconic status as perhaps the purest exemplification of the Surrealist ideal of “convulsive beauty.” Later editions of the book were expanded to incorporate a body of theoretical, poetic and speculative texts that together comprise one of the most important expositions of Surrealist cultural theory. Bellmer weaves a remarkably disparate set of concepts and intuitions--from fields as diverse as mathematics, morphology, optics and psychology--into a theory of eroticism that provides a totally unexpected rationale for his uncompromising art. His ideas are, in the words of poet Joë Bousquet, a “scandal to reason.” This English edition follows Bellmer’s original, the texts having been translated for the first time--by Malcolm Green, who also provides an introduction--from the final German version.

Hans Bellmer The Anatomy of Anxiety
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 113.05 $A study of Hans Bellmer's eroticized images and the psychological origins of his disturbing art.The German-born Surrealist Hans Bellmer (1902-1975), best known for his life-size pubescent dolls, devoted an artistic lifetime to creating sexualized images of the female body―distorted, dismembered, or menaced in sinister scenarios. In this book Sue Taylor draws on psychoanalytic theory to suggest why Bellmer was so driven by erotomania as well as a desire for revenge, suffering, and the safety of the womb. Although he styled himself as the quintessential Oedipal son, an avant-garde artist in perpetual rebellion against a despised father, Taylor contends that his filial attitude was more complex than he could consciously allow. Tracing a repressed homoerotic attachment to his father, castration anxiety, and an unconscious sense of guilt, Taylor proposes that a feminine identification informs all the disquieting aspects of Bellmer's art. Most scholarship to date has focused on Bellmer's work of the 1930s, especially the infamous dolls and the photographs he made of them. Taylor extends her discussion to the sexually explicit prints, drawings, paintings, and photographs he produced throughout the ensuing three decades. The book includes a color frontispiece and 121 black-and-white images (eight published here for the first time), as well as appendixes containing several significant texts by Bellmer previously unavailable in English.

Hans Bellmer
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.00 $Hans Bellmer (1902-1975) was a German artist, best known for the life-sized pubescent female dolls he produced in the mid-1930s. Historians of art and photography also consider him a Surrealist photographer. Bellmer was born in the city of Kattowitz, then part of the German Empire, now in Poland. Up until 1926, he'd been working as a draftsman for his own advertising company. He initiated his doll project to oppose the fascism of the Nazi Party by declaring that he would make no work that would support the new German state. Represented by mutated forms and unconventional poses, his dolls were directed specifically at the cult of the perfect body then prominent in Germany. The erotic imagery of Hans Bellmer's art is both witty and violet obsessed with his central them - that of the "Doll" - Bellmer creates capricious, often sado-masochistic, assemblages of parts of the female anatomy. Directed not only against the Nazi regime but toward a freer sexual and human expression, they were admired by the surrealist artists in Paris where Bellmer finally settled in 1938, shortly before his work was to be confiscated by the national Socialists. With remarkable technical virtuosity, the artist introduces a new repertory of physical combinations and transformations in drawings, gouaches, engravings, and assembled objects. This book, the first to present the totality of Bellmer's art, reproduces in stunning color and black-and-white illustrations the many facets of his art. The author, Sarane Alexandrian, has written a compelling text that illuminates Bellmer's of art history in the grand tradition of the erotic art of Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, the German artists of the Renaissance, the Romantics of the nineteenth century, and the Surrealists. The author, who belonged to the circle of Andre Breton, is one of the most important interpreters of Surrealism and has published many books on the subject and individual Surrealist painters.

Behind Closed Doors: The Art of Hans Bellmer
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 51.64 $The life-size, adolescent-girl dolls created by German artist Hans Bellmer in the 1930s are the subject of Therese Lichtenstein's highly original book. Disturbing and controversial, Bellmer's dolls—with their uncanny, fragmented bodies and eroticized poses—were just as shocking during Bellmer's time as they are today. Until now there has been little available in English about Bellmer's dolls, and Lichtenstein's book will be welcomed for its fresh interpretation of the artist's work and his place in European modernism. Eighty striking photographs accompany the text.Working during a time when Nazism was on the rise, Bellmer created several dolls with fragmented bodies that could be dismantled and arranged in various configurations. Using a narrative format, he then photographed the dolls in a range of grotesque—often sexual—positions. The images he conveyed were of death and decay, abuse and longing, in stark contrast to Nazism's mythic utopian celebration of adolescence.Lichtenstein interprets Bellmer's complex expressions of eroticism as a protest against the Nazis and also against his father, a cold and repressive Nazi sympathizer. At the same time, she says, by hyperbolically flaunting a passive femininity in a theatrical manner, Bellmer's images allow us to consider how cultural representations can affect the formation of identity and alternative possibilities.

Paul Kooiker - Sunday
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 263.87 $The spirit of Hans Bellmer lives in the twenty first century in Kooikers monograph Sunday. These limpid outdoor photographs capture a naked fat woman wearing high heels, her white body so bleached that her genitalia are invisible, rendering her doll-like. She poses, faceless, in positions that are sometimes sexual, sometimes motionless and morbid. Around her is a back garden, with a homemade dais for her to pose on, and views of dark trees and bushes with blood-red leaves. Kooiker uses his contemporary technique to create an oblique, threatening, somehow vintage atmosphere.
