Bertrand Fleuret: Landmasses and Railways Format: Hardcover

Bertrand Limbour : The Wirtz Gardens
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 104.88 $“[Jacques Wirtz's] painterly handling of light and shadow, like that of 17th-century Flemish painters, gives him 'a great power to evoke space . . . '” ―Pilar Viladas, The New York TimesThe third installment in the acclaimed, gorgeously designed Wirtz Gardens publications presents 32 gardens designed by the Belgian landscape-design virtuosos Peter Wirtz, Martin Wirtz and Jacques Wirtz―a mixture of private, public and corporate projects in Belgium, Switzerland, Japan, the US, France and England. For the first time, private projects in the US and Switzerland are shown, alongside more unusual projects such as the cloister gardens of the Hauterive Abbey in Switzerland; Wirtz's 2012 stage set for a Dior fashion show; and a secluded Japanese garden with a view of Mount Fuji. Every garden is accompanied, as it was before, by its plan and a brief text.Jacques Wirtz founded his practice in Schoten, Belgium, in 1950. The company has since become a thriving family business, with Wirtz’s two sons, Martin and Peter, joining the firm. Gardens in Belgium and all its neighboring countries, plus Italy, Switzerland and the US, are underway; past work has been undertaken in Japan, Spain and Portugal.Wirtz International’s private projects range from small courtyards to large estates, corporate headquarters, business parks and housing developments; public projects consist of parks, boulevards, city squares, university campuses, museums and streetscapes.

Bertrand Russell, Language and Linguistic Theory (Continuum Studies in British Philosophy)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 206.12 $Although there has been a significant revival in interest in Bertrand Russell's work in recent years, most professional philosophers would still argue that Russell was not interested in language. Here, in the first full-length study of Russell's work on language throughout his long career, Keith Green shows that this is in fact not the case. In examining Russell's work, particularly from 1900 to 1950, Green exposes a repeated emphasis on, and turn to, linguistic considerations. Green considers how 'linguistics' and 'philosophy' were struggling in the twentieth century to define themselves and to create appropriate contemporary disciplines. They had much in common during certain periods, yet seemed to continue in almost total ignorance of one another. This negative relation has been noted in the past by Roy Harris, whose work provides some of the inspiration for the present book. Taking those two aspects, Green's aim here is to provide the first full-length consideration of Russell's varied work in language, and to read it in the context of developing contemporary (i.e. with Russell's work) linguistic theory. The main aims of this important new book, in focusing exclusively on Russell's work on language throughout his career, are to place Russell within the changing contexts of contemporary linguistic thought; to read Russell's language-theories against the grain of his own linguistic practice; to assess the relationship between linguistic and philosophical thought during Russell's career, and to reassess his place in the history of linguistic thought in the twentieth century. As such, this fascinating study will make a vital contribution to Russell studies and to the study of the relationship between philosophy and linguistics.

Bertrand Russell
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 42.79 $With extraordinary concision and clarity, A. J. Ayer gives an account of the major incidents of Bertrand Russell's life and an exposition of the whole range of his philosophy. "Ayer considers Russell to be, except possibly for Wittgenstein, the most influential philosopher of our time. In this book [he] gives a lucid account of Russell's philosophical achievements."—James Rachels, New York Times Book Review "I am sure [this] is the best introduction of any length to Russell, and I suspect that it might serve as one of the best introductions to modern philosophy. . . . Ayer begins with a brief, austere, and balanced account of Russell's life: as in Russell's autobiography this means his thought, books, women, and politics. Tacitus (and Russell) would have found the account exemplary. Ayer ends with a sympathetic and surprisingly detailed survey of Russell's social philosophy. But the bulk of this book consists of a chapter on Russell's work in logic and the foundations of mathematics, followed by a chapter on his epistemological views and one on metaphysics. . . . I find it impossible to imagine that this book will not remain indefinitely the very best book of its sort."—Review of Metaphysics "The confrontation or conjunction of Ayer and Russell is a notable event and has produced a remarkable book—brilliantly argued and written."—Martin Lebowitz, The Nation

Bertrand Fleuret: The Risk Of An Early Spring
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 47.54 $Is this a book about the environment? Is this a book about people and their relationships? The beautiful, strange and often cryptic black and white images within suggest that it is a bit of both: here we see hedges of flowers, and the view from an airplane; a mountain range, and a girl alone in a booth. As our physical world becomes increasingly out of synch, so too do human cycles and interactions. Essayist Lorenzo de Rita writes, “This year, like every year, spring has sprung. But not when it was supposed to... As temperatures of the earth and the oceans are rising, ecosystems go nuts... That's the world where we live now... Wrong timings, missed encounters, unclear destinations: that's the early spring of the human species. Self-contemplation is not allowed, as we rush to the next fraction of an instant, at the speed of a hiccup... Next year will spring again... let's synchronize our watches.”

Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 88.86 $One of the most prominent philosophers and activists of the 20th century, Bertrand Russell is known not only for his fundamental contributions on the scope of human knowledge and on mathematical logic, but also for his often-controversial views on ethical and linguistic topics. Bertrand Russell : The Spirit of Solitude 1872-1921
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 37.99 $Born in 1872, the third child of Viscount Amberley, heir to the Russell earldom, Bertrand Russell was to become the most influential philosopher of the twentieth century. His early masterpiece Principia Mathematica, written with Alfred North Whitehead, set the course for the modern and post modern preoccupation with language; its philosophical ambitions are what drew Ludwig Wittgenstein from Vienna to Cambridge to study under the already famous Russell. But Russell's interest in philosophy was only one aspect of his prodigious appetite for ideas. His anti-war pamphlets and protests got him expelled from the university and imprisoned - not for the last time.Russell's personal life was marked by the same promiscuous drive as his public one. The author of Marriage and Morals - a book that received special citation in the award of Russell's 1950 Nobel Prize for Literature - boldly applied his free-thinking principles in his own most intimate relationships. His spectacular success in seducing women, both married and single, constituted a relentless challenge to the Victorian morality that was his aristocratic birthright. Russell's avant-garde philosophy of free love combined with his principled pacificism would make him an icon of the international Left in the 1960s.In short, Russell's was a protean life so vast in influence, relationships and interests that it is virtually a window on the major historical events of the twentieth century. The Spirit of Solitude is the first biography of this towering figure to go behind Russell's public life and reveal a complex and even contradictory character that has, until now, remained obscure.

Bertrand Russell on God and Religion (Paperback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.21 $"I think all the great religions of the world - Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, and Communism - both untrue and harmful. It is evident as a matter of logic that, since they disagree, not more than one of them can be true."Bertrand Russell wrote these words in his famous essay, "Why I Am Not A Christian." In Bertrand Russell on God and Religion, Al Seckel presents in one volume the severe scrutiny Russell brought to bear on organized religion in his best essays.Bertrand Russell on God and Religion is an exhaustive compilation of Russell's best essays on religion, freethought, and rationalism. Al Seckel has rescued many of the writings from obscure pamphlets, chapters buried in books, and from out-of-print periodicals. From the outset of his career, Russell struggled to uproot and expose the remnants of Puritanism's emphasis upon guilt, sin, and moral condemnation. In "Why I Am Not A Christian," he wrote, "Religion is based . . . primarily and mainly upon fear . . . fear of the mysterious, fear of defeat, fear of death. Fear is the parent of cruelty, and therefore, it is no wonder if cruelty and religion have gone hand in hand."It is in this vein that Russell approached religion. The essays in this book are representative of the full range of his thinking on the subject. Some of the essays included are, "My Religious Reminiscences," "A Debate On The Existence of God," "What Is An Agnostic?" and "Are the World's Troubles Due to Decay in Faith?"Bertrand Russell was the recipient of countless awards for excellence during his long lifetime (1872-1970), including the Nobel Prize for literature, which he won in 1950. The range of his critical inquiry is without parallel in contemporary Western culture.

Bertrand Russell's Life and Legacy (Philosophy)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 60.21 $Almost five decades after his death, there is still ample reason to pay attention to the life and legacy of Bertrand Russell. This is true not only because of his role as one of the founders of analytic philosophy, but also because of his important place in twentieth-century history as an educator, public intellectual, critic of organized religion, humanist, and peace activist. The papers in this anthology explore Russell's life and legacy from a wide variety of perspectives. This is altogether fitting, given the many-sided nature of Russell, his life, and his work. The first section of the book considers Russell the man, and draws lessons from Russell's complicated personal life. The second examines Russell the philosopher, and the philosophical world within which his work was embedded. The third scrutinizes Russell the atheist and critic of organized religion, inquiring which parts of his critical stance are worth emulating today. The final section revisits Russell the political activist; it directs an eye both at Russell's own long career of peace activism, but also at his place in a highly political family tradition of which he was justifiably proud. This book thus constitutes an invitation, if one were needed, to the world of Bertrand Russell. Those new to Russell, but with an interest in biography, philosophy, religion, or politics, will hopefully find something to learn here. This may spark an interest in learning more about Russell. But this book is not just intended for the Russell neophyte. The book sheds fresh light on a number of topics central to Russell studies--his connections to other philosophers, for example. Scholars well-versed in Russell studies will enjoy grappling with the treatment given to these topics here.

Bertrand Russell's Philosophy
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.51 $Bertrand Arthur William Russell, 3rd Earl Russell, (1872 - 1970) was a British philosopher, logician, mathematician, historian, writer, social critic, political activist, and Nobel laureate. At various points in his life, Russell considered himself a liberal, a socialist and a pacifist, but he also admitted that he had "never been any of these things, in any profound sense". In the early 20th century, Russell led the British "revolt against idealism". He is considered one of the founders of analytic philosophy. Russell was a prominent anti-war activist and he championed anti-imperialism. He went to prison for his pacifism during World War I. Later, Russell concluded that war against Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany was a necessary "lesser of two evils" and criticized Stalinist totalitarianism, attacked the involvement of the United States in the Vietnam War and was an outspoken proponent of nuclear disarmament. In 1950, Russell was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "in recognition of his varied and significant writings in which he champions humanitarian ideals and freedom of thought". The fourteen essays in this volume, by leading British and American philosophers, were written for a symposium held in 1972 at the University of Indiana to examine and assess Bertrand Russell's achievement in the main areas of his philosophical work. They cover his logic and its philosophical implications, his ontology, his theory of knowledge, his theory of scientific method and his political philosophy. There is also an eye-witness account of Russell's involvement in the cold War. The authors are Roderick M. Chisholm, Romane Clark, Nino B. Cocchiarella, Frederick B. Fitch, Grover Maxwell, John Myhill, George Nakhnikian, David Pears, W. C. Salmon, Wilfrid Sellars, Ralph Schoenman, Edward Sherman and Richard Wollheim. The editor was a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Indiana.
